26、 Most people hold the belief that young people from poor families whose socio-economic backgrounds are not in bad conditions tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Headstart” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into pre-school institutions at the age of three and it was expected to help them succeed in education. However, the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not willing to get involved in the process.
To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on researches showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different social-economic status, age and family structure. The program invited many trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance to communicate with their children, and useful skills on child development.
At the age of three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio-economic background and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio-economic backgrounds or family structures. What they found through the program was that one of the most important factors that affected the child’s development was the poor quality of parent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.
The “Missouri” program is quite different from “Headstart” program. From what they did we can draw a conclusion: Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness.
【1】What can we learn about the “Headstart” program?
A.It helped many children from poor families to make progress.
B.It failed because the children they helped had already fallen behind.
C.It helped the children involved succeed in their education soon.

27、 When the young donkey Daisy May came to us, she was pregnant. With no donkey experience , I was unprepared for what might come next.
After some difficulty, Daisy's baby was born. I thought the poor thing was dead. I planned to put the loss behind us and make sure she never got pregnant again. Just then, I heard a little noise. I couldn't believe that baby was breathing and looking at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was.
When Samson was nine months old, I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day to wean (使断奶)him, but otherwise he went wherever she did. I think she would be lost without him. His donkey stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoy playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.
I asked a worker to make a harness (马具)for my three little donkeys. When I brought it home I taught them one by one how to pull a cart. Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.
That was 15 years ago. Now, the most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little renowned. People come from all over to see him perform. The neighbors bring their grandchildren, and my sons bring their friends.
Samson shakes hands, unties my shoe, picks up a hat and more. And when I ask him if he has any bad habits, he tries to pick my pocket! He surprisingly learned these tricks himself. I just ask him to do them and he understands.
The relationship I have with my "baby" Samson has been an amazing experience. Every day is a fun day with this superstar donkey.
【1】Why was the author at a loss for what might happen next at first?
A.She wasn't ready to be a mother.
B.She never raised a donkey before.
C.The donkey was pregnant by accident.
D.The donkey gave birth to a dead baby.
【2】What can we learn about Samson when he was little?

【4】Which of the following can best describe Samson?
A.friendly and courageous. B.intelligent and lively.
C.carefree and creative. D.patient and fortunate.
28、This month, Germany’s transport minister, Alexander Dobrindt, proposed the first set of rules for autonomous vehicles. They would define the driver’s role in such cars and govern how such cars perform in crashes where lives might be lost.
The proposal attempts to deal with what some call the “death valley” of autonomous vehicles: the grey area between semi-autonomous and fully driverless cars that could delay the driverless future.
Dobrindt wants three things: that a car always chooses property damage over personal injury; that it never distinguishes between humans based on age or race; and that if a human removes his or her hands from the driving wheel — to check email, say — the car’s maker is responsible if there is a crash.
“The change to the road traffic law will permit fully automatic driving,” says Dobrindt. It will put fully driverless cars on an equal legal footing to human drivers, he says.
Who is responsible for the operation of such vehicles is not clear among car makers, consumers and lawyers. “The liability issue is the biggest one of them all,” says Natasha Merat at the University of Leeds, UK.
An assumption behind UK insurance for driverless cars, introduced earlier this year, insists that a human “be watchful and monitoring the road” at every moment.
But that is not what many people have in mind when thinking of driverless cars. “When you say ‘driverless cars’, people expect driverless cars.” Merat says. “You know — no driver.”
Because of the confusion, Merat thinks some car makers will wait until vehicles can be fully automated without operation.
Driverless cars may end up being a form of public transport rather than vehicles you own, says Ryan Calo at Stanford University, California. That is happening in the UK and Singapore, where government-provided driverless vehicles are being launched.
That would go down poorly in the US, however. “The idea that the government would take over driverless cars and treat them as a public good would get absolutely nowhere here,” says Calo.
【1】What does the phrase “death valley” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.A place where cars often break down.
B.A case where passing a law is impossible.
C.An area where no driving is permitted.
D.A situation where drivers’ role is not clear.
【2】The proposal put forward by Dobrindt aims to _____ .
A.stop people from breaking traffic rules
B.help promote fully automatic driving
C.protect drivers of all ages and races
D.prevent serious property damage
【3】What do consumers think of the operation of driverless cars?
A.It should get the attention of insurance companies.
B.It should be the main concern of law makers.
C.It should not cause deadly traffic accidents.
D.It should involve no human responsibility.
【4】What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Autonomous Driving: Whose Liability?
B.Fully Automatic Cars: A New Breakthrough
C.Autonomous Vehicles: Driver Removed!
D.Driverless Cars: Root of Road Accidents
29、Americans are getting older, and family size is getting smaller. That means the United States will have less working adults in the future. By 2030, twenty percent of U.S. residents will be 66 years of age or older. That compares to 13 percent in 2010, and just under 10 percent in 1970.
The aging population could be a concern if Americans expect to have an expanding population, says David Kelly. “If you're investing in things like the housing industry or the auto industry and you need an ever-growing population, then you have to adjust to a world in which the U.S. population is growing more slowly,” he said.
Different studies show that an aging population cuts into economic growth, and older workers who stay on the job are often less productive than younger ones.
But as Americans are aging, last year the birth rate nationwide dropped to its lowest level in 32 years. Less than 3.8 million babies were born in 2018, which is two percent less than the year before. Taken as a whole, the population grew only six-tenths of one percent in 2018, compared to 1.2 percent growth in the 1990s.
Kelly said the low birth rate is not necessarily bad news. Looking beyond economics, a growing world population could do more damage to Earth’s environment. He said that U.S. policy makers should plan for dealing with a smaller workforce. “We really should adapt to a world of slow population growth because it's clearly happening to us,” he said.
What will replace human workers? Like others, Kelly expects the lack of workers to fuel the growth of robotics and artificial intelligence. He said that Americans need to prepare for the U.S. economic growth to slow a little in the future. Another way to fix the decreasing workforce is to add more legal immigrants(移民). Immigrants usually arrive in the United States when they are of working age.
But this is not an easy solution, because the U.S. Congress and President Donald Trump continue to disagree over how to deal with immigration issues.
The U.S. economy can easily make changes to deal with the slower population growth, Kelly said. But he worries that politics could get in the way of solutions. “The real question is a political question,” he notes, “because it seems even as our population matures(成熟) in years, it seems that our political system gets less mature in terms of thought process.”
【1】What is the main problem discussed in the passage?
A.Solutions to the lack of workers.
B.Conventional political systems.
C.Adaptation to the slow growth.
D.The aging population in America.
【2】According to the passage, aging Americans will contribute to _______.
A.an ever-growing birth rate
B.a catastrophe in some industry
C.slow economic development
D.a perfect Earth's environment
【3】What does "this" in paragraph 7 refer to?
A.The fast development of robotics.
B.The growth of artificial intelligence.
C.The fixing of decreasing workforce.
D.The adding of more legal immigrants.
【4】As for the solution to the problem, what is Kelly's attitude?
A.Optimistic.
B.Casual.
C.Concerned.
D.Desperate.

Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 【4】 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 【5】 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.
So why are soft skills so highly 【6】 for?
With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 【7】 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 【8】 career.
Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 【9】 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 【10】 in their chosen field.

Leeches as Medical Treatment
Leeches are small wormlike creatures that live in water and suck the blood of animals and humans. In the past, though, leeches were commonly used in medicine. Then advances in science led to other kinds of treatments, and leeches disappeared from the sick room. Now, however, they are making a comeback.
The use of leeches in medicine goes back at least 2,500 years. Doctors used them to treat the sick in ancient Egypt, India, Persia, and Greece. It was believed in those days that taking blood from patients helped to bring their bodies back into balance. This belief and the practice of draining blood with leeches continued through the ages.
Another use of leeches has been investigated by a team of German doctors who study the ability of leeches to reduce pain. Their patients suffer from arthritis, a painful joint disease that often affects knees, shoulders, or fingers. When the German doctors put leeches on the arthritic knees of their patients, almost all of them felt immediate relief from the pain. Most of the patients continued to be pain-free for over a month and some for as long as six months.
Leeches have also proved indirectly useful in treating patients with heart and blood diseases. Since the 1880s, researchers have understood that certain chemicals in. leeches prevent blood from clotting or becoming hard. Many people with heart or blood problems live with a serious risk of the formation of blood clots, which can travel through the blood to the heart or brain and cause death. In the 1950s, a scientist identified the chemical in a leech that prevents clotting. Later studies led to experiments with the chemical and the development of a drug that thins the blood of patients who are at risk for blood clots.
Though doctors today do not view the use of leeches as the all-purpose treatment it once was, they now see that for certain problems, this ancient remedy may be valid after all.

Artificial intelligence(AI)teachers can provide customized teaching for students to meet their unique requirements through analyzing data and deep learning. In the future, they may replace human teachers for basic teaching tasks.Since some students may find it and put new power into traditional teaching patterns. An educational system providing customized teaching centered on students represents the future trend of AI education.
China's AI education has developed rapidly in recent years with the rise of several thousand relevant companies.Currently,AI teachers are able to help students leamn pronunciation, analyze their condition, guide them to learn independently, and even grade writing assignments. Some foreign AI educational systems have been introduced into several domestic schools and have worked well on trial.
However, the promotion of AI education is still facing several difficulties in practice such as low technological levels, inadequacy of data and lack of funds.AI education still depends largely on human teachers' work. Most importantly,it conflicts with current educational patterns because the courses developed by foreign countries are not suitable for Chinese exam-oriented education.Teachers may also find it hard to change their original roles in classrooms since easing control on classes may make them seem irresponsible. These problems need to be handled before the mass promotion of Al education.
With AI teachers, the original teacher-centered classes will be transformed into student-centered ones where teachers only organize the class and provide guidance.Since teachers are supposed to not only equip students with knowledge but also shape their values and help them develop creative abilities,AI teachers will not replace human teachers but will only pose higher requirements of teaching.A combination of AI teachers and human ones can create the best future for Al education.

Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that just about everyone has had at least once: Scary. Her reputation was not unlike that of Dracula. Miss Baugh allowed no nonsense (胡言乱语). She drilled us and taught us to take school seriously. She also introduced to us the concept of “extra credit” for a correct response to a random question — and a frown for an incorrect one. Miss Baugh had been teaching for a long time and knew how to frighten even the naughty boys in the back row, including me. She managed to scare us all.
But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap prank (恶作剧) pieces — an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a puddle of ink.
Of all the people I could have pranked, I chose Miss Baugh somehow. At the beginning of the class, before she’d returned to her classroom, I dared to approach her desk. I opened her grade book and placed the bottle and the black metal on one of the pages, proudly noting that it truly did look like spilled ink! Then I went to my desk and waited for the fun.
I wasn’t disappointed. When Miss Baugh saw the items, she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The prank had succeeded the way beyond my expectations. But immediately she discovered that it was just a piece of black metal. She picked up the “puddle”, then the bottle, and examined them. She looked up with eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly stare. Some of my classmates who had seen me set up the fake spill carefully avoided looking at me, so as not to give me away. Then came the unavoidable question: “Who did this?”
