26、An airline passenger ensured a 20-year-old man was reunited with his lost wallet-along with a little extra something to make up for their time apart.
Hunter Shamatt first lost his wallet while he was on a Frontier Airlines flight from Omaha to attend his sister's wedding in Las Vegas earlier this month. On realizing his wallet was lost, he contacted the airline to see if anyone had turned it in—but to no avail. Since the wallet contained his ID, a signed paycheck, his debit card and $60 in cash, he “feared the worst”.
Shortly after the flight, however, Hunter was shocked to receive a package in the mail from an unknown sender. Inside was his wallet-along with an additional $40 in cash.
“Found this on a Frontier flight from Omaha to Denver-row 12, seat F stuck between the seat and wall,” read a letter in the package. “Thought you might want it hack. All the best. PS: I rounded your cash up to an even $100 so you could celebrate getting your wallet hack. Have fun!”
Hunter's mother, Jeannie, posted a photo of the letter to social media in hopes that they would be able to track down the sender and thank them for their kindness. All they had to go on was that the letter was sent from Applied Underwriters in Omaha and the sender's initials were signed: "T.B".
The Good Man was later identified as Todd Brown, a father-of-five who was delighted at the chance to "have a little fun" with helping out a hard-working stranger. Brown says that he often tries to do good deeds without any recognition, thus why he didn't sign his full name on the letter, but Jeannie later insisted on praising the Nebraska native on social media.
“I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can despite the outcome,” she wrote on Facebook. “This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything”.

27、 Ice volcanoes erupted on the shores of Lake Michigan last weekend, and an employee from National Weather Service ( NWS) caught sight of an astonishing scene on the spot. “You never know what you'll find at the lake until you go out there," the employee said, "Today it were volcanoes. ”
Despite their nickname, ice volcanoes aren't really volcanoes at all. They form at the edges of lakes, where thin sheets of ice form, and water shoots through holes in the ice, Water flows beneath the ice sheet and builds up enough pressure to push water to the surface. If the air above is cold enough, the released water freezes over the surrounding ground, forming a mini volcano of sorts.
Ice volcanoes can be very dangerous to climb on because they are empty inside and built over that hole in the ice. Although some frozen volcanoes were discovered a few years ago, it is still rare to witness one.
Ice volcanoes typically form near large bodies of water where freezing temperatures below allow an ice shelf to form over the water’s surface along the coastline. Meanwhile, waves beneath the shelf must be strong enough to crack the ice and push water out. For this reason, ice volcanoes tend to form along shorelines where winds blow up waves constantly.
For example, when the Oval Beach volcanoes were spotted, the wind was almost due west, which was perfect for pushing waves right into the shoreline at this location. Due to their superior size, the Great Lakes may be more likely to form ice volcanoes along their shores than smaller lakes.
So if you want to see an ice volcano in person, the Great Lakes may be your best choice—but be cautious where you step!
【1】What did the NWS employee discover in Paragraph 1?
A.The eruption of ice volcanoes. B.Volcanoes erupting on the mountain.
C.Frozen shores of Lake Michigan. D.An ordinary scene of Lake Michigan.
【2】What can we learn about ice volcanoes according to the passage?
A.They appear whenever it is freezing. B.They are real volcanoes in the ocean.
C.It is uncommon to see their eruptions. D.It takes years to form an ice volcano.
【3】Where do the ice volcanoes usually form?
A.Shorelines with suitable weather conditions.
B.Smaller lakes where wind direction is perfect.
C.Along shorelines where waves are not powerful.
D.In the center of the ocean or large bodies of water.
【4】What is this passage mainly about?
A.Dangers of ice volcanoes. B.Ice volcanoes and their formation.
C.Different kinds of volcanoes. D.The Great Lakes and ice volcanoes.
28、 A new study suggests that some homemade soups—made of chicken, beef or vegetables—might help fight malaria (疟疾).
Jake Baum of the Imperial College London led the research. He asked children at a London school to bring homemade clear soups that their families would make to treat a fever. The children were from many different cultural backgrounds.
The soups were then exposed to the parasite (寄生虫) that creates 99.7 percent of malaria cases in Africa, the World Health Organization, WHO, explained.
Of the 56 soups tested, five were more than 50 percent effective in containing the growth of the parasite. Two were as effective as one drug now used to treat malaria. And four soups were more than 50 percent effective in preventing parasites from aging to the point where they could infect mosquitoes that spread the disease.
Baum also noted that it was unclear which foods made the soups effective against malaria.
“If we were serious about going back and finding the...ingredient, like good scientists, we’d have to do it in a very standardized way,” he said.
The soups came from families from different ethnic histories, including Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They had several main ingredients, including chicken, beef and green vegetables. Baum said the vegetarian soups showed similar results to the soups with meats.
Baum said his aim was in part to show children that scientific research can turn an herbal cure into a man-made medicine.
He noted the research of Dr. Tu Youyou of China. In the 1970s, she found that the herb quinhao was an effective antimalarial treatment. The herb has been used in Eastern medicine for two thousand years..
Tu’s research led to the man-made drug artemisinin, a drug now widely used to treat malaria. She won the Nobel Prize in 2015.
【1】Why did Jake Baum choose children from different cultural backgrounds?
A.To show that he treated all children equally.
B.To get the number of families that made soups.
C.To find out which kind of soup could treat a fever.
D.To make sure the soups for research were various.
【2】What percentage of the tested soups are effective in dealing with malaria?
A.About 20%.
B.99.7%
C.More than 50%.
D.About 10%.
【3】Which of the following is a result of the research?
A.People like putting different meats into soups.
B.Vegetarian soups can be effective as well.
C.The meats in soups are mostly ineffective.
D.Soups are actually man-made medicines.

A.everyone can succeed in the research of herb.
B.the importance of Chinese traditional medicine.
C.the long history of quinhao being used in medicine.
D.scientific research contributes to man-made medicine.
29、 Your next car might drive itself. After years of trials on city streets, driverless vehicles(车辆)are now nearing the practical use. Last month,a driverless bus began carrying passengers through Lyon,France. Most in the automobile industry think self driving vehicles will be on the road by 2020.
Driverless cars will at first be huddled with human driven cars. But the first places where they will become dominant(占优势的)are crowded urban areas—exactly the spots most damaged by the car age. Many advanced cities are already reducing the role of human-driven vehicles. Driverless cars will quicken that process and will bring us enormous benefits.
Driverless cars will reduce accidents by around 90 per cent. That’ s big—the annual death toll on the world’ s roads is about 1. 2 million a year. Pollution and carbon emission(排放)will drop, because urban driverless cars will be electric. The old, otherwise, would stay at home most of the time and the disabled and teenagers will suddenly gain mobility.
On the other hand, driverless cars will bring terrible results. The best thing about the car age was that it employed tens of millions of people to make, market, insure and drive vehicles. Over the next 20 years, the mostly low skilled men who now drive trucks, taxis and buses will see their jobs reduced. Car makers are especially scared. The few cars of the future might be made by tech companies such as Apple,Baidu and Google. Imagine the influences on Germany, where there is the largest vehicle industry.
Dramatic change is coming, and driverless cars could arrive by 2020. But governments have hardly begun thinking about it. Only 6 per cent of the biggest US cities have considered them in their long term planning.
Ten years ago, anyone hardly saw the smartphone coming. But now it is so common in our daily life. Let’ s hope we do a better job of handling the driverless car.
【1】Which can replace the underlined words “be huddled with”in Paragraph 2?
A. Show up. B. Exist together. C. Get rid of. D. Take the place of.
【2】Why can driverless cars reduce pollution and carbon emission?
A. They will be powered by electricity. B. They will reduce the number of cars.
C. They will save fuel by driving themselves. D. They will reduce too many accidents.
【3】What can we know about driverless cars?
A. They will not hit the road until 2020. B. They will only be used in urban areas.
C. They will not cause any road accident. D. They aren’t still seriously taken officially.
【4】What’ s the author’ s attitude towards driverless cars?
A. Doubtful. B. Praising. C. Hopeful. D. Worried.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?
Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 【1】 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 【2】.
This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 【3】 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 【4】 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 【5】 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.
So why are soft skills so highly 【6】 for?
With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 【7】 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 【8】 career.
Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 【9】 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 【10】 in their chosen field.

Driving an electric car 【1】 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 【2】 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 【3】 petrol-driven vehicle.
The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone — two important 【4】 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.
It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 【5】. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 【6】 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.
Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often 【7】 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 【8】. Diesel cars are also more 【9】 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.
Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 【10】 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

39、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Imagine living on the edge of a vast desert, which is moving quietly closer to your village every day and covering your fields. The desert is on the move. This is called desertification.
Desertification occurs in regions close to an already existing desert. It generally arises from two related causes. The first is over-use of water in the area. There is not enough water in any case, and if it is not carefully used, disaster can follow. As time goes on, water shortages make farming more and more difficult. In some places, locals can remember local lakes and marshes which were once the homes for all kinds of fish and birds. They have been completely buried by the sand now. Farmers leave the land, and fields are replaced by deserts.
The second cause is misuse or over-use of the land. This means that the wrong crops are planted and need more water than is available. Ploughing large fields and removing bushes and trees means that the wind will blow away the soil. Once the soil is lost, it is hard to replace, and if there is rain, it has nowhere to go, and brings no benefit.
It is not only the farmers and villagers who suffer. Every spring, the skies over some of eastern cities, thousands of kilometers away from the deserts, can be darkened by sandstorms. Dust from deserts can have a great effect on weather systems. While desertification is perhaps being partly caused by global warming, these sandstorms can make global warming worse by adding to what is known as the greenhouse effect.
What can be done to slow down or stop the process of desertification? A great deal of work is already under way. Obviously first steps are to find new water sources. Tree planting can help, by providing barriers between desert and rich field. Some types of grass also hold the soil together, and stop the wind taking it. Without these efforts, it will be harder and harder to stop the world’s deserts in their tracks, and more and more farmers will give up and head for cities. The lesson to be learnt lies beneath the sand.

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
Paragraph1: Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus.

Paragraph2: The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces.
