27、Your 2019 Reading List, Provided by Bill Gates
Do you want to be a billionnaire? Most of us can’t live like billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, but we can read like him. Gates recommended four books in 2019—though some were published earlier.
Leonardo da Vinci, by Walter Isaacson (2018)
The bestselling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein researched deeply into da Vinci’s contributions beyond art, highlighting the breadth of his scientific, technological, and creative output. “Leonardo nearly understood almost all of what was known on the planet at the time. That’s mostly because of his curiosity about every area of natural science and the human experience,” said Gates.
The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, by Thi Bui (2018)
Gates calls this graphic novel “really impressive”. Bui is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the fall of Saigon, and becoming a parent inspired her to look into her own parents’ miserable history. “I was struck by how the experiences Bui describes manage to be both universal and specific to their circumstances,” said Gates.
Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders (2018)
Saunders, a long-time short story writer, won high praise for this novel. The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (萦绕) the basement of Willie Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, who died at 11 in real life. “Willie’s death after the Civil War made the president have a new understanding of the grief he’s creating in other families by sending their sons off to die in battle,” said Gates.
Origin Story: A Big History of Everything, by David Christian (2018)
This new book is by the creator of Big History, a free, online social studies course. It traces history in wide, sweeping movements, starting with the Big Bang, and it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science. This is a brief history of the universe. “David gets a little stuck on the current economic and political problems in the West, and I wish he talked more about the role technology will play in preventing the worst effects of climate change,” said Gates.
【1】Which books refer to the field of science?
A.Leonardo da Vinci and The Best We Could Do
B.Lincoln in the Bardo and Origin Story
C.Origin Story and Leonardo da Vinci
D.The Best We Could Do and Lincoln in the Bardo
【2】If you are interested in thrillers, whose book will you most probably choose?
A.Walter Isaacson B.Thi Bui
C.David Christian D.George Saunders
【3】What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A.The Best We Could Do left Gates unfavourable impressions.
B.Leonardo da Vinci only made contributions to art.
C.David Christian talks much about technology.
D.Lincoln in the Bardo has been warmly received.
28、Paper route
A paper route is one of the most common tried and true ways to earn money, and has been the first job for many kids over the decades.
Pros:
First, if your child rides his bicycle every morning during deliveries, he will be getting a great workout while he is earning money. Second, paper deliverers have the freedom to do their route as quickly as they want, in the order that they want; and they don’t have to dress up to do it!
Cons:
Unpredictable Weather: your child will be facing adverse(不利的) weather conditions.
Early Morning Hours: newspapers have to arrive early, many times by 5:00 in the morning. But your children might have to be up as early as 2: 00 a. m. to get the papers out on time.
Collecting Money: It can be intimidating(令人胆怯的 ) for some children to ask strangers for money.
What Kids Can Learn About Money (by doing a paper route):
Paper routes depend on punctuality of the paper delivery. Your child will learn to deliver the papers by a specified time each morning.
Family business
If you own your own business, you can hire them to work for your family business.
Pros:
Since you will be the employer, you can make changes to their schedule if you need to. In addition, your child will work for you, so you’ll always know where he is and be able to keep an eye on him.
Cons:
Variability: depending on your line of work, you may not have enough work to keep your child busy consistently.
Limited for Children: If you don’t have your own business, but like the idea, you may want to ask friends, neighbors, or relatives you know who might want to hire some additional help.
What Kids Can Learn About Money (by working for the family business):
Working for the family will give your children a direct line of communication when they want to talk. Give them the opportunity to discuss pay rates with you. Introduce them to negotiations to agree on a fair rate.
【1】What are the advantages of paper routes, according to the passage?
A.They are safe and have a flexible schedule.
B.You just work in the morning and can get a great workout.

A.Children have to arrive at 5: 00 am to prepare the newspapers on a paper route.

D.Only children whose parents own a business can work
29、Twenty-nine-year-old Maxim Kiselev lives in Moscow, Russia, with his beautiful wife, Natalia, and lives with a disease which mainly affects the left side of his body. Maxim is a wheelchair dancer, and does both ballroom style dancing and figure skating on ice.
He initially took up dancing when he was 14 years old as a way to strengthen his body--in particular his left arm and fingers which had limited functionality at the time. Gradually, he began to think about becoming the standing partner of a person using a wheelchair; however, his challenges with balance meant it wasn't going to be possible. His mother and coach suggested he get into a wheelchair himself. He unwillingly got into a wheelchair but was quickly pleased by his progress.
The possibilities without a partner were limited, so Maxim went on in search of a dance partner. With only some practice with his first partner, the pair took part in their first tournament, where they performed well. While his start in partner dancing was good, finding a right partner wasn't easy. His mother would get in touch with the girls' parents or coaches and the vast majority had very rude reactions as soon as they found out he was disabled.
His coaches drove him to grow and develop as a dancer, and came up with some great techniques to help him. His dancing was improved even further when his third coach forced him to think in the way a standing dancer did. Maxim says this is what helped his performance to look like dancing rather than just rolling back and forth on the dance floor.
Maxim says his greatest pride is having taken his dancing skills on ice. He is the first high level figure skater in a wheelchair, and still the only one to this day. Maxim is taking a break from dance because of health issues, but he recently participated in a Russian Virtual Reality Project which aims to motivate people with disabilities to get more active in real life.

34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high【1】 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an【2】 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the【3】 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an【4】 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.
From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?
The answer is yes. The first artwork【5】 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its【6】 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.
Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.
Art is a way in which human 【7】 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 【8】 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain【9】 traits of old master paintings be called art?
For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as【10】. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.
Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.
It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Human beings are smart. However, it seems that people are gradually losing their smartness as smartphones become more and more important assistants in their lives, reported news website Record Japan on Oct. 22. As we rely too much on technology instead of our brains, many people have lost three basic abilities, said the website.
The first skill many people have lost is remembering phone numbers. Because phone numbers are stored in smart phone contacts, there's no need to dial a number or look at it again.
And some people may also have lost their sense of direction because navigation apps can guide people anywhere they want to go. These apps can even find shortest routes for you and avoid traffic jams. But the worst lost skills may be social ones, meaning that some people are becoming socially inept(无能的). People often bury themselves in their smart phones. As we're too addicted to what's happening in the virtual world, some of us have lost conversational skills and sometimes can't even tell whether a person is happy or not.
In August, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, studied 51 students aged 11 and 12 who had over five hours' screen time every day. Their task was to tell the emotions of 48 pictures of faces that were happy, sad, angry or scared. The children made an average of 14.02 mistakes at the beginning. But after a five-day camp without electronic (电子的) products, they made only 9.41 mistakes on average. “If you’re not practicing face-to-face communication, you could be losing important social skills,” concluded professor Yalda Uhls from the research.
Luckily, people still have a chance to get these abilities back. You should try to keep your parents' numbers in mind for emergencies. You should also pay more attention to street signs and stores, which will help you to draw a mind map and stop you from getting lost. And the easiest solution to social skill loss is to take a break from electronic devices because we are social creatures. We need device-free time.

In December 2018, The Guardian changed its wording-using 'global heating' instead of 'global warming' -after scientists found that Earth's temperature is set to rise from between 2.5C and 4.5C. There had been a goal to keep the rise within 2C. And on May 1, the UK parliament (议会) declared a 'climate emergency', becoming the first parliament to do so.
It's true that 'global heating' and 'climate emergency' are – in terms of language – two simple phrases. But they send out plenty of messages.
If with 'global warming' we're still inside our comfort zone of handling the situation, entering the state of 'global heating' is like heading to a point where the delicate (微妙的) balance of nature is disturbed so much that there is no turning back. Everything will be changing: Coral will die, polar bears will lose their habitats completely, and extreme weathers like droughts and heavy storms will happen at a higher frequency. There is no denying that we're entering a 'climate emergency'.
'Decades ago when the science on the climate issue was first increasing, the impacts could be seen as an issue for future generations, ' but, as Katharine Mach, a Stanford University climate scientist, told The New York Times, now it's definitely our issue, 'a shift (变化) we all are living together'.
However, getting these messages through is far from enough. It depends on each and every one of us to find a solution – if there are any solutions left to find.
'We have no time to waste, ' said the UK's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, according to the BBC. Corbyn urged that 'we take rapid and dramatic action now'.
Indeed, language matters. But action matters even more.

The Possible Health Dangers of Air-conditioners
Although many of us may feel air-conditioners bring relief from hot, humid or polluted outside air, they pose many potential health hazards. Much research has looked at how the movement of air inside a closed environment—such as an office building—can spread disease or expose people in the building to harmful chemicals.
One of the more widely publicized dangers is that of Legionnaire’s disease, which was first recognized in the 1970s. This was found to have affected people in buildings with air-conditioning systems in which warm air pumped out of the system’ cooling towers was somehow sucked back into the air intake, in most cases due to poor design. The warm air, filled with bacteria, was combined with cooled, conditioned air and was then circulated around various parts of the building. Studies showed that even people outside such buildings were at risk if they walked past air exhaust pipes.
Large air-conditioning systems add water to the air they circulate by means of humidifiers. In older systems, the water used for this process is kept in special reservoirs, the bottoms of which provide breeding grounds for bacteria which can find their way into the ventilation system. The risk to human health from this situation has been highlighted by the fact that the immune systems of approximately half of workers in air-conditioned office buildings have developed the ability to fight off the organisms found at the bottom of system reservoirs. But chemicals called “biocides” are added to reservoirs to make them germ-free, and they are dangerous in their own right in sufficient quantities, as they often contain compounds strongly linked to cancers.
Finally, it should be pointed out that the artificial climatic environment created by air-conditioners can also affect us. In a natural environment, whether indoor or outdoor, there are small variations in temperature and humidity. Indeed, the human body has long been accustomed to these normal changes. In an air-conditioned living or working environment, however, body temperatures remain well under 37℃, our normal temperature. This leads to a weakened immune system and thus greater exposure to diseases such as colds and flu.
