二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   You may think that sailing is difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.

First, you must ask yourself, "Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?" You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.

Let's start with the wind blowing from the behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. At should be at a 90° angle(角度)to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.

If the wind is blowing from the side it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be a 45°angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap(摆动). It shouldn't look like on a flag pole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.

Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try the sail will flap and the boat ail stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can't go in straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tucking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.

1What should you consider first while sailing?

    A.Sailors' strength. B.Wave levels.

    C.Wind directions. D.Size of sails.

2What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.The sail. B.The boat.

    C.The wind. D.The angle.

3What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?

A.Move in a straight line. B.Allow the sail to flap.

C.Lower the sail. D.Tack the boat.

4Where can you probably find the text?

    A.In a popular magazine. B.In a tourist guidebook.

C.In a physics textbook. D.In an official report.

  • 27、How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes.” But Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U. S. is the first target market.

Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

【1】Which is one of the features of the Kolibree toothbrush?

A.It can sense how users brush their teeth.

B.It can track users’ school performance.

C.It can detect users’ fear of seeing a dentist.

D.It can help users find their phones.

【2】What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3?

A.You will find it enjoyable to see a dentist.

B.You should see your dentist on a day-to-day basis.

C.You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a dentist.

D.You’d like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day.

【3】Which of the following might make the Kolibree toothbrush fun?

A.It can be used to update mobile phones.

B.It can be used to play mobile phone games

C.It can send messages to other users

D.It can talk to its developers.

【4】What can we infer about Serval’s children?

A.They were unwilling to brush their teeth

B.They often failed to clean their toothbrushes.

C.They preferred to use a toothbrush with a dry head.

D.They liked brushing their teeth after Serval came home.

【5】What can we learn about the future development of the Kolibree?

A.The brush handle will be removed.

B.A mobile phone will be built into it.

C.It will be used to fill holes in teeth

D.It will be able to check users’ teeth

  • 28、   The American dream is the faith held by many people in the United States of America that through hard work, courage, creativity and determination, they can achieve a better life for themselves. More specifically, they agree on how to get ahead in America: get a college education, find a reliable job, and buy their own house. But do Americans still believe in that path, and if they do, is it attainable?

The most recent National Journal poll(民意测验,投票) asked participants about the American dream, what it takes to achieve their goal, and whether or not they felt the control over their ability to be successful. Obviously, the results show that today, the idea of the American dream and what it takes to achieve it looks quite different from it did in the late 20th century. By the large, people felt that their actions and hard work not outside forces were the deciding factors in how their lives turned out. But the participants had definitely mixed feelings about what actions make for a better life in the current economy.

In the last seven years, Americans have grown more pessimistic about the power of education to lead to success. Even though they see going to college as a fairly achievable goal, a majority 52 percent think that young people do not need a 4-year college education in order to be successful.

Miguel Maeda, 42, who has a master’s degree and works in public health, was the first in his family to go to college, which has allowed him to achieve a sense of financial stability(稳定) his parents and grandparents never did. While some, like Maeda, emphasized the value of a degree rather than the education itself, others still see college as a way to gain new viewpoints and life experiences. Sixty-year-old Will Fendley, who had a successful career in the military and never earned a college degree, think “personal drive” is far more important than just go to college. To Fendley, a sense of drive and purpose, as well as an effective high-school education, and basic life skills, like balancing a checkbook(支票簿), are the necessary elements for a successful life in America.

1It was commonly acknowledged that to succeed in America, one had to have ________.

A.a sense of drive and purpose B.an advanced academic degree

C.a firm belief in their dream D.an ambition to get ahead

2What is the finding of the latest National Journal poll concerning the American dream?

A.More and more Americans are finding it hard to realize.

B.It remains alive among the majority of American people.

C.An increasing number of young Americans are abandoning it.

D.Americans’ idea of it has changed over the past few decades.

3How do some Americans view college education these days?

A.It helps broaden their minds. B.It needs to be strengthened.

C.It widens cultural diversity. D.It promotes gender (性别) equality.

  • 29、When it comes to mental illness, many people often find it tough to get the help they need. This is especially true for young students making the transition (过渡) to college life.

“Sometimes, students don't realize how hard it is to adjust to college,” said Laura Smith, associate dean of students at the University of Texas at Dallas. “You’re not the big fish in your classes anymore; you have all kinds of personal stress; you're away from home. “Dealing with these things is not easy.”

Students who are going through these problems sometimes want to reach out. But if students don't feel comfortable seeking help, many feel that it's the responsibility of their university to help them.

“I really wish that there was more importance placed on how counseling (咨询) centers help students,” said Connie Trinh. "Counseling services are just as important as academics and sports.”

Trinh, 27, graduated from Texas Woman’s University in 2015. During college, she hosted various workshops on how to handle mental health conditions. Trinh used her own story to connect with students who might be facing similar problems. High academic pressures, cultural differences as an Asian American and stressful social situations stood out as some of the most common causes of Trinh's anxiety.

It was only after years of personal problems that she could admit that reaching out isn’t a sign of weakness.

“If you feel you can't connect with other people around you, you should address the issue without shame,” Trinh said. “You'll find that there are a lot of people out there who sincerely want to help you.”

【1】The passage can be seen as the author’s reflections upon_________.

    A.college life

    B.counseling service

    C.mental health

    D.cultural differences

【2】What's Trinh's preferred solution to the problems mentioned?

    A.Making self-criticism.

    B.Handling the problems actively.

C.Solving the problem on your own.

D.Finding the causes of the problems.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “connect with” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Get along with.

    B.Join together with.

    C.Be related to.

    D.Get through to.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

    A.Counseling service helps doing research.

B.Adjusting to college life is a piece of cake.

    C.Hosting workshops improves students’ ability.

D.Being brave to get help is not a sign of weakness.

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

You may know that vitamin C is important to your bodybut do you know that vitamin D is important to your body as well? Vitamin D has a significant role in calcium homeostasis(钙稳态) and metabolism(新陈代谢). It is sometimes called the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight.

Vitamin D can help bones and muscles grow strong and healthy. If a person is short of vitamin Dhe or she may have problems like rickets(佝偻病) and osteoporosisRickets is mainly found in children. Osteoporosisthe thinning of boneis a common problem as people get older. Studies in these years have found that vitamin D may also have other uses. If someone is short of vitamin D, he may have heart problems or die from some cancers.

The easiest way to get vitamin D is from sunlight. But many people worry about getting skin cancer and skin damage from the sun. Also, even skin color has an influence. Darker skinned people get less vitamin D than lighter skinned people. Older people get less vitamin D than younger people. You can also get it from foods. Some food such as cheese and egg yolks (蛋黄) have some vitamin DBut most of vitamin D in the American diet comes from food like milk with the vitamin added.

Now more doctors are testing for vitamin D in their patients. However, some doctors worry that if people take too much vitamin D, it might be bad for their body. At the same time, skin doctors tell people to be careful with strong sunlight.
