  • 27、   Do you think that puppet shows (木偶戏) are just for children? In some parts of the world, like Indonesia, a puppet show is an activity enjoyed by people of all ages.

At most puppet shows, the audience sits on one side of the screen and the puppeteer (操纵木偶的人) sits on the other. However, at an Indonesian front shadow puppet show, the audience can choose which side to sit on. From out front, audience members see shadows of puppets acting out exciting scenes of romance or battle. These people enjoy the fantasy that “real” events are taking place.

Behind the scenes, it can be fascinating to see a dalang, or puppeteer, in action. The dalang manipulates puppets made of buffalo hide (水牛皮) by moving attached rods () of buffalo horn or bamboo. Each of a puppet’s arms and the main part of its body have their own rods, but its legs are rarely moved on their own.

Each puppet has its own voice and its own way of moving. The “good” puppets usually speak calmly and move gracefully; the “bad” ones have rough voices and move in a funny way. The stories acted out by the puppets are often based on ancient myths or legends. A specially written puppet show might also celebrate a birth, wedding, or harvest. Sometimes a dalang chooses an old story that he thinks is appropriate for the village where the performance will take place. Before the show, he may ask local people about current events in the village and then use the puppet show to illustrate possible solutions to local problems.

The audience of a shadow puppet show expects to settle in for a long evening. A show may start in the later afternoon and not end until four o’clock the next morning! Children and adults alike may fall asleep in the middle of a show and wake up hours later to find it still going on. Of course, the dalang must remain alert (警觉的) throughout the show. One dalang remarked, “I have no real sense of time until it’s all over.”

1How is an Indonesian puppet show different from most other puppet shows?

A.A dalang may take a rest during a show

B.People can leave in the middle of a show

C.It is an activity enjoyed by people of all ages

D.The audience can choose to sit on either side of the screen

2The underlined word “manipulates” in Paragraph 3 means “ ”.

    A.builds B.chooses

    C.controls D.watches

3What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.The “good” puppets move in a funny way

B.A dalang offers solutions to local problems before the show

C.The audience determines the puppets’ voice and way of moving

D.The dalang attempts to personalize the puppet show for the audience

  • 29、Girl with a Pearl Earring

Johannes Vermeer is a Dutch painter of the 17th century. Vermeer’s paintings are realistic pictures of scenes from everyday life. Not many of Vermeer’s paintings still exist. When one was put on sale in London in 2004, someone paid 16,000,000 for it, so you can see Vermeer is an artist who is valued very highly.

One of Vermeer’s most beautiful and well-known paintings is the Girl with a Pearl Earring. It shows a pretty young woman with blue cloth around her head and a large, shining pearl earring. We do not know much about Vermeer’s life, and the English writer Tracy Chevalier decided to think of a story to explain who the girl is in this painting. She gave the book the same name as the painting. Chevalier imagines that the girl in the painting works for the Vermeer family. Her name is Griet.

She comes from a poor family and does the cleaning and housework. Some of Vermeer’s family are nice to her, but others are not. The Vermeer family needs him to sell paintings to live. Vermeer works all day in his studio. He does not like anyone else to go into it, but Griet can go in to clean it. A rich man who often buys Vermeer’s paintings thinks Griet is beautiful and suggests Vermeer paint her. This makes trouble for the girl because Vermeer’s wife is unhappy that Vermeer allows Griet in his studio and paints her, and not his wife. She wants to send Griet away but the wife’s mother stops her, as she wants Vermeer to work and earn money.

Griet becomes interested in Vermeer’s work and more friendly with the artist. He asks her to make special colours for him and she spends more time in the studio.

Vermeer is not happy with the painting. Something is wrong-he cannot finish it. Then he remembers his wife’s lovely pearl earring. He asks his mother-in-law(岳母)for it and she gives it to him as she wants the painting finished and sold. When the wife is out, Griet wears the pearl earring and Vermeer paints it. When the painting is nearly finished, the wife sees it and is very angry that this girl she hates has had her earring. Griet loses her job and is sent away, but the butcher’s son loves her and takes care of her. In the end, they marry and lead a happy life.

This is Chevalier’s explanation of the famous painting and the expression on the girl’s face. The book has been made into a film with the same name. Do you think the story matches the picture

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

The fingerprint scanners   【6】 (use) in smartphones are so small that they only read parts of fingerprints. So they have to take many scans of your finger or thumb (拇指) 【7】 they work properly. Smartphones also let users save several finger and thumbprints. Since a print only has to match one of the saved images 【8】 (unlock) the phone, the scanner is more likely to make mistakes.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

  • 41、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Retirement is the point where a person stops employment completely. The “standard” retirement age varies from country to country, but it is generally between 50 and 70, according to the latest statistics, 2011. However, for a long time, people have got into an argument about whether the age of retirement should be increased or reduced in their own countries.

There are several arguments for allowing older people to continue working as long as they are able. Many people think that older employees have a large amount of knowledge and experience which can be lost to a business or organization if they are made to retire. Besides, older employees are often extremely faithful employees and are more willing to implement (执行) company policies than the young. A more important Point is regarding the attitudes in society to old people. To force someone to resign or retire at 60 or 65 indicates that the society does not value the input of these people and that practically their useful life is over.

Allowing old people to work indefinitely (无限地), however, is not always a good policy. Some people took the strong view that age alone is no guarantee of ability. Many young employees have more experience or skills than older staff, who may have been stuck in one area for most of their working lives. Having compulsory (强制性的) retirement allows new ideas in an organization. On the other hand, older people should be rewarded by society for their life’s labor by being given generous pensions (退休金) and the freedom to enjoy leisure. They can have time to do whatever they like, that is, they can have their own plans or roles and achieve their retirement goals.

With many young people unemployed or frustrated in low-level positions, there are often calls to compulsorily retire older workers. However, this can affect the older individual’s freedom—and right—to work. In my opinion, giving workers more choices over their retirement age will benefit both society and the individual.
