二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The outbreak of locusts, an insect that mainly lives in Africa and Asia, is the worst experienced by Kenya in 70 years. The crowds are some three times the size of New York City, eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal grassland and destroying livelihoods in the process.

“These hungry things are alarming,” says Keith Cressman, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's senior locust forecasting officer. "A crowd the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined."

Desert locusts are infamous for their ability to breed(繁育)rapidly in large numbers every three months. And with some help from the wind, they can travel as much as 80 miles a day. Most years, the insects stay in African deserts. However, under the right environmental conditions, they can multiply quickly, spread as much as 400 times every six months and cause extensive destruction if left unchecked.

“The insect has the ability to take advantage of good conditions.” Cressman says.

The "good conditions" the scientist is referring to began in mid-2018 when a rainstorm from the Indian Ocean struck a remote area of the Arabian Peninsula known as the "Empty Quarter". Normally, it would dry out within a short period, killing most of the locust population, which depends on green plants for food. However, in late 2018, a second rainstorm struck the same region. The huge sandy area got wet, which is exactly what desert locusts need to lay their eggs and breed. The extra food supply caused the population to explode for the second time in six months.

Luckily, the locusts, experts say, are easy to control with chemicals. Kenya badly needs equipment and a steady supply of chemicals to effectively wipe out the massive insects. Hopefully, leaders worldwide will recognize the tough situation and contribute generously to control the locust outbreak.

【1】What can we infer from what Cressman says in paragraph 2?

    A.Little can dull locusts' appetite.

B.Urgent action must be taken against locusts.

C.Overpopulation in big cities leads to food shortages.

D.New York and California should meet challenges together.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Locusts' living conditions.

    B.Locusts' destructive effect.

    C.Locusts' daily travel distance.

    D.Locusts' super reproductive power.

【3】For what purpose does the author mention "good conditions"?

A.To explain immediate causes of the locust outbreak.

B.To remind locals to preserve the environment.

C.To analyze how to prevent locust outbreak.

D.To highlight the strength of two rainstorms.

  • 27、   Many of us know about Russia's Lake Baikal from our textbooks,or by listening to Chinese singer Li Jian's hit song,Lake Baikal. But over the past decade, the world's deepest freshwater lake has been in the spotlight for an extreme sport.

Each March since 2005,about 150 people from around the world sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon. They come to explore the lake's breathtaking beauty and challenge themselves in unpredictable conditions. The 26-mile journey starts on the lake's eastern shore. In March, the ice is a meter thick and iron-hard.Runners cross this frozen surface, finishing on the western side of the lake.

Known as the"blue eye of Siberia",Lake Baikal has exceptionally clear waters. This means its ice is almost perfectly transparent(透明的)."Seen from above,a runner on the ice looks as if he or she is jogging through space,"The New York Times noted.

The landscape might be beautiful, but the weather is harsh.Strong winds blow across the lake and frostbite(冻伤)can occur within half an hour.Runners say the cold climate is what draws them. They want to test their limits."When you are in such an environment, you don't have cars around you,you don't have the noise around.I think these extreme races allow you to be alone with nature,"Alicja Barahona,a 64-year-old runner from the US,told ABC News.

The location offers some strange and unique characteristics for this marathon. The finish line is visible from the start, but the endless white offers no progress markers. The race also ends with little fanfare(喧闹).Tourists crowding the ice are mostly addicted to taking photos and just ignore the runners.

For some runners, the absence of audience makes the race more challenging, because it's lonely. They must fight with themselves."You are alone on Baikal. It is your race. You are alone with yourself All you need to do is to defeat yourself,"Veronique Messina,a French runner, told the Telegraph.

1What do we know about the Baikal Ice Marathon?

A.It requires runners to jog through space.

B.It attracts more and more participants each year.

C.It combines extreme weather and beautiful scenery.

D.It highlights our textbooks and Li Jian's hit song.

2What does the underlined word"harsh”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Pleasant. B.Severe. C.Annoying. D.Damp.

3How does the Baikal Ice Marathon differ from other marathons?

A.Only men are allowed to run in this race.

B.There are many progress markers on the ice.

C.The runners are often disturbed by tourists.

D.The runners can see the finish line from the start.

4What is the most challenging in the race for Messina?

    A.Loneliness. B.The long distance.

    C.The cold climate. D.Noisy surroundings.

  • 28、   Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. 【1】Here's how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. Firstyour time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 【2】A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a comer of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. 【3】 Listening carefully in class means less work Inter. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 【4】 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you'll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don't pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

【5】 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A.This will help you understand the next class.

B.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.

C.Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

D.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

E.There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

F.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

G.Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

  • 29、Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.

However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.

What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom each other.

The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets — to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

【1】The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “without ________”.

    A.a message

    B.delay

    C.introduction

    D.a problem

【2】Some cats and dogs may fight when ________.

A.they are cold to each other

B.they look away from each other

    C.they misunderstood each other's signals

D.they are introduced at an early age

【3】What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?

A.We should learn to live in harmony.

B.We should know more about animals.

C.We should live in peace with animals.

D.We should learn more body languages.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

  • 37、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

When I arrived at 6 a.m. in the large hospital kitchen,Rose was already checking name tags on the trays(托盘). “Hi,I'm Janet. ”I tried to sound cheerful, although I already knew Rose's reputation for being impossible to work with. "I'm scheduled to work with you this week."

Rose stopped what she was doing and peered over her reading glasses. I could tell from her expression she wasn't pleased to see a student worker. “What do you want me to do?Start the coffee?"I asked.

Rose coldly nodded and went back to checking name tags.

I filled the 40-cup pot with water and began making the coffee when Rose yelled,“That's not the way to make coffee. ”She stepped in and took over.

Nothing I did pleased her. All morning, her eagle eyes missed nothing and her sharp words hurt.

Totally exhausted,I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third year university student working my way through school,I had never before met anyone like Rose.

Fighting back tears,I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. "What shall I do?”The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.

Working with Rose the next morning,I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things Rose's way as much as possible. As I worked,I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love.

Over the next few days,an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away.

Throughout the rest of the summer,we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman,I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems.

The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.

  • 41、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I could smell the turkey cooking, even in the attic where I was hiding out. I heard a laugh, too, and a bang from something being dropped. Our house was noisier since my new stepsister and step-mother moved in — Jen and Mom.

I called her Mom, but the word felt uncomfortable, like a pair of shoes that pinched (夹脚). I didn’t remember my own mother; she had died in an accident when I was a baby. It had always been just Dad and me. We were a team. Now, so much had changed, and sometimes I wished I had the magic to change it back.

I heard Dad’s footsteps upstairs. “Do you want to take Jen skating?” he asked.

“I guess.” I sighed, thinking about how Dad and I usually spent Thanksgiving Day building a big snowman. But this year, Dad was too busy helping Mom cook the turkey.

“Thanks,” Dad said and put his arm around my shoulders. “We’ll make that snowman later,” he promised.

“Yeah,” I agreed, not too sure we’d have time.

Mom handed us some homemade cookies with smiling faces as we grabbed our skates. I had to admit, Mom came up with good ideas sometimes. Even though I liked that, I still couldn’t help but feel as if she were changing everything.

“No, thanks. I’m not hungry,” I said, although I was, a little.

“Ready?” I asked Jen. She nodded, and we headed out the front door.

The snow crunched under our boots as we walked down the street. The silence was awkward. “Did you go skating a lot last year?” I asked, blurting out the first thing that came to my mind.

Jen shook her head and looked at me. Finally she said, “On Thanksgiving, Mom and I always went to visit some friends on a farm. I especially loved seeing their big turkeys.”

Until then, I’d never even thought about how Jen must be feeling. She not only had a new stepfather and stepbrother; she had a new town and home, too. Jen and her mom used to live near a lake, and she’d had to move up north with us. She’d had more changes than me.
