二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Not every parent looks at education in the same light. Some prefer the public school approach, while other parents would rather take their child`s learning experience into their own hands at home.

Reports state there has been a 75 percent increase in homeschooling in the US since 1999. Over two million American children are homeschooled now. Parents can tailor(定做) their children' s classes, environment and schedule in order to fit the needs of the family, which is very convenient.

There is a dark side to this educational freedom, though. Homeschooling is completely legal, but in most states parents are only required to sign a paper expressing their intention to homeschool their child. It is only when there is doubt of misconduct or mistreatment that officials will look more into the authenticity(可靠性) of the level of education and care of the child within the home.

Blindly trusting parents to give their kids a proper learning experience at home without any outside intervention (干预) is putting children at risk for losing out on a basic standard education. There is no confirmed statistic that shows homeschooled children do any better in study than those in public and private schools. A study in 2013, in fact, showed homeschoolers can be at a disadvantage and pointed out a serious educational gap.

Homeschooling can also create more opportunities for mistreatment in households that struggle with home violence. One frightening case in particular involved 10-year-old Raashanai Jones, who was found dead in her home, where her mother was supposed to be providing a safe haven and a basic education for her. Raashanai was 55 pounds, and neighbors didn't even know she existed because they had never seen her outside.

Many times when there is a problem with a child, whether it being mental, physical or educational, teachers and peers are the first to take notice. Taking this opportunity away from the child without giving back is a huge harm to the child and the community at large.

1According to Paragraph 2, some parents prefer home-schooling because

    A. homeschooling can save much money

    B. they can control their children's education

    C. they want their children to stay in a sater place

    D. they want their children to help them with housework

2What can be inferred about homeschooling in Paragraph 3?

    A. It should be made illegal in the US.

    B. It has more disadvantages than advantages.

    C. It has no authenticity of the level of education.

    D. It's easy for parents to get the permission for that.

3Why does the author give the example of 10-year-old Raashanai Jones?

    A. To show her mother is cruel.

    B. To show children should go outdoors.

    C. To show homeschooling may not be safe for kids.

    D. To show home violence is dangerous.

4What's most probably the author's attitude towards homeschooling?

    A. Supportive.

    B. Concerned.

    C. Scared.

    D. Uninterested.

  • 28、   A few years ago, Adina Lichtman was handing out sandwiches on the streets of New York City to help people experiencing homelessness. One man, grateful for the sandwich, approached her and offered a surprising idea.

“It’s great that you’re giving out sandwiches,” he said, “but one thing we really need is socks, especially as winter approaches.”

“Here I was, sandwiches in hand, thinking I knew the best way to help people,” Lichtman said. “It was a powerful lesson, and I wanted to put it into action.”

She began that night, with a simple step: going door-to-door on the floor of her dormitory at New York University, asking her classmates if they could each just donate (捐赠) just one pair of their own socks to someone experiencing homelessness. She got 40 pairs of socks in a single night, from a single floor. The next morning she opened her door to find a lot of socks that other people had donated.

That morning officially kicked off Knock Knock, Give a Sock (KKGS), a new nonprofit (非营利的) organization that has now provided over 350,000 pairs of socks to the homeless across America. To date, over 50 colleges and high schools across the US have joined KKGS over the years.

“While many people donate clothing, 9 out of every 10 clothing donors have never donated socks. On top of that, people who are trying to donate socks often find it difficult to donate used socks,” she says. “KKGS is one of the only organizations that collects used socks. We have volunteers knocking on doors of their classmates in school, of their workmates at work, and even of their neighbors.”

But, whether you’re 26 or 62, you don’t need to wait to organize your own sock drive, collect socks, or even wash and clean some of your own to donate to your local shelter, or someone in need who you meet on the street.

1How did the homeless man’s words affect Lichtman?

A.They caused her to start KKGS.

B.They pushed her to go to college.

C.They encouraged her to house the homeless.

D.They made her continue to give out sandwiches.

2How did Lichtman’s classmates react to her request for donation?

    A.Some refused it politely.

    B.They strongly supported it.

C.Some felt quite surprised by it.

    D.They considered it unreasonable.

3What advice does the author offer to people?

    A.Take action in small ways.

    B.Start your own organization.

C.Make donations from an early age.

D.Find creative ways to help people.

A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.

    —Tenneva Jordan

I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom’s “grown up” girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.

It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered() presents, she would sigh and warn us, “There won’t be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed.” Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase “giving is better than receiving,” but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I couldn’t get to sleep on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.

“Here’s another one for you,” said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom’s. A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother’s handwriting.

    “Mom, I can’t…”

Young Chinese parents embracing e-books for children

Chinese children are spending more time reading digital books as young parents are increasingly open to the idea, research shows.

The amount of time children under 9 spend reading e-books every day increased almost 20 percent to 24. 3 minutes between 2016 and 2017, according to a joint study by e-book company Kada Story and teaching consultancy TAL Education Group.

A three-year study of 6, 030 parents found that almost 70 percent said they are willing to let their children use mobile phones and tablets, while 25 percent of those born in the 1990s or later said they let their children spend more than 40 minutes a day on mobile devices.

Parents in first-tier cities are more likely to let their children use mobile devices, with children in Beijing spending almost 70 minutes a day using the gadgets.

“Digital reading is an important skill for children to master in this age of information explosion, ” said Wang Jing, chief editor of Kada Story.

However, not all parents want their children to read digitally.

“I fear e-books will negatively affect my son’s attention span or expose him to inappropriate content, ” said Xie Wenfeng, mother of a 7-year-old boy in Shanghai.

She said she believed books in print are better for the eyes and do not affect sleep. “I also worry about possible addiction to e-books.” she added.
