  • 26、   It may be time to tailor students’  class timetables to their natural biological rhythms (节律) according to a new study.

Researchers tracked the personal daily online activity records of nearly 15,000 college students. Based on their activities on days when they were not in classfirstly the researchers divided the students into different sorts. They are “night owls”—students who enjoy staying awake all night“daytime finches”—students who are active in the daytimeand “morning larks”—students who get up early. Then the researchers compared their class times with their academic results.

Their findings showed that students whose biological rhythms were out of step with their class timetablesfor examplenight owls taking early morning coursesreceived lower grades. This disagreement is caused by the “social jet lag”(社会性时差)—a condition in which one’  s peak watchfulness times are in disagreement with workschool or other demands. “We found that most students were being jet lagged by their class timeswhich was related very strongly with their dropping academic performance”said Benjamin Smarr.

“Our research indicates that if a student can always keep the same schedule pattern in which class days resemble non class daysthey are more likely to achieve academic success”said Aaron Schirmer. While students of all categories suffered from class caused jet lagthe study found that night owls were especially to be affected easily. But it’  s not as simple as students just staying up too late. “Because owls are later and classes tend to be earlierthis mismatch hits owls the hardestbut we notice that larks and finches who take later classes also suffer from the mismatch”said Smarr.

Different people really do have biologically various timingso there isnt a one-time-fits-all way for education. The results suggest that “rather than warn late students to go to bed earlierin disagreement with their biological rhythmswe should work to individualize (使个性化)education.  In this waylearning and classes are structured to take advantage of knowing at what time of day a given student will be most fit to learn” Smarr said.

1Why did the researchers carry out the new study

    A. To make timetables more suitable to students’  biological rhythms.

    B. To analyze the causes of students’  different sleeping patterns.

    C. To ask students to pay more attention to their health.

    D. To keep track of students’  daily online activities.

2Which is probably the main cause of students’  poor grades

    A. Tight class timetables. B. Biological diversity.

    C. Social jet lag. D. High academic demands.

3What can be inferred from the last paragraph

    A. Education should be individualized.

    B. Biologically various timing calls for proper solutions.

    C. Education should focus on students’  full development.

    D. Students should adapt themselves to various education patterns.

4What does the text mainly talk about

    A. Students should keep a busy timetable.

    B. Students should have good sleeping habits.

    C. Students have biologically various timing.

    D. Biological rhythms matter in students’  grades.

  • 27、   The McDonnells lived in a small brick house in Larchmont, a suburb of New York City. Jim was foreman of mail carriers at the post office where he had worked for 25 years. Married in 1960, he and Anne were childless.

On the evening of the eleventh anniversary of their marriage, carrying out the garbage, Jim McDonnell slipped on ice-coated steps, and struck his head. A few days later, driving to work, he lost control of the car, hit a telephone pole, and banged his forehead against the windshield. The following day he fell off the stairs, and again he banged his head. Found unconscious, he was hospitalized for three days with a cerebral concussion(脑震荡). One day in the same month, Jim borrowed a friend’s station wagon and drove to Kennedy Airport to pick up Anne’s brother and family. When he returned the borrowed car at 10 p.m., he was unaware that the wallet containing his identification had slipped out of his pocket onto the floor of the station wagon. After that, he was never seen again.

So what really happened to Anne’s husband? During his walk home, Jim had indeed blacked out(昏厥), losing all ability to remember who he was and where he lived. What happened then is unclear. The next thing he knew was that he was in downtown Philadelphia, a city he had never visited before. Seeing signs advertising the services of a James Peters, a real estate broker, Jim adopted James Peters as his own name. He had no past; his only reality was the present. James Peters got a Social Security card, which could be obtained at that time without showing a birth certificate, and took a job in a health club. He next worked at a cancer research institute, cleaning out animal cages. He also got a nightshift job at the P&P luncheonette, where he became well known for his omelets, as well as his courtesy and good humor.

About a month before Christmas 1985, colleagues noticed that Jim had grown unusually quiet and depressed. Something seemed to be turning in his mind. On December 22, Jim had fallen and banged his head. The next day at work he seemed distracted, and late that afternoon he had fallen again, striking his head. On December 24, he awoke feeling confused, yet delighted. After almost 15 years, he knew who he was! He was James A. McDonnell, Jr., of Larchmont, New York. His wife’s name was Anne.

Anne had just returned home from Christmas Mass, where she lit candles and prayed for Jim. A light snow was falling, and she was in a hurry to leave for Christmas dinner at her sister’s before the roads grew slick. Then the doorbell rang. "Oh my," she thought, "this is not a good time for a visitor." Anne opened the door — and saw a man with a full white beard. Immediately she recognized Jim. She couldn’t speak.

To Jim, Anne looked a little older, but prettier too. His heart overflowed.

    “Hello, Anne,” he said.

D."Come on in," said Anne, "I'm expecting you."

  • 28、   For nearly thirty years I did parent programs in all of the fifty states, and regardless of the community, there was always a shortage of fathers attending, usually by a 10:1 (mothersfathers) ratio. Maybe they were all tending to business, and they obviously didn't think school was any of their business.

The world is now flat. How's that for a sea change? As Thomas Friedman described it in his book The World Is Flat twenty-five years ago, the power structure of the world consisted of highs and lows. The countries with the power and knowledge were at the top of the mountains and the rest were down in the valleys. A handful of countries (the United States, Britain, Germany, and Japan) ruled the world's economy because they monopolize (垄断)the information and power.

Then came the Internet. Suddenly the countries down in the valleys were connected to the information network and the work flow. These included India, Eastern Europe, South Korea, Brazil, and China. Don't believe it? Walk into a supermarket and pick up any ten toys, checking each for where it was made, My last count: China, ten out of ten. The world's workforce became “flattened”. No more disconnected valleys.

Since 2000, U.S. manufacturing has lost six million jobs, one-third of its workforce, most of them males. For the first time in history, women hold the majority of jobs in the U.S.

The only people who don't understand the sea change in business are the fathers and sons still clinging to the image of the male who doesn't need to play school—just play ball. It's been thirty years since that idea had any wings, but too many males are still trying to make it fly. Once the only thing that mattered for men was what they could get out of the ground with their hands. Now it's what they can get out of their heads that counts. And without classroom success, today's male faces an impossible challenge from both intelligent women on the home front and foreigners willing to do the same job for less while sitting in an office in Bangalore or Singapore.

1Based on Friedman's description, why is the world becoming flat?

A.US which is the most powerful country controls the information.

B.Knowledge is shared globally with the development of the Internet.

C.Goods made in China and other countries are increasingly popular.

D.The mountains and valleys are flooded by the sea water these days.

2According to the author, American fathers should  .

A.be positively involved in boys' schooling for academic success

B.focus mainly on the physical development of their boys

C.spend more time playing with their boys to get their belief fly

D.do more housework because the mothers are more intelligent

3Where is this passage most likely from?

A.A news story. B.A book review.

C.An educational book. D.An economic report.

  • 29、   The second little pig was unlucky. He built his house from sticks. It was blown away by a wolf, which quickly ate him up. His brother, by contrast, built a wolf-proof house from bricks. The fairy tale could have been written by a salesman for the construction industry, which strongly favours brick, concrete and steel. However, in the real world it would help reduce pollution and slow global warming if more builders copied the wood-loving second pig.

In 2015 world leaders meeting in Paris agreed to move towards zero greenhouse-gas emissions(排放)in the second half of this century. That is a tall order, and the building industry makes it even taller. Cement-making alone produces 6% of the world’s carbon emissions. Steel, half of which goes into buildings, accounts for another 8%. If you count all of the energy that goes into lighting, heating and cooling homes and oces, the world’s buildings start to look like a serious environmental problem.

Governments in the rich world are now trying to promote greener behavior by requiring developers to build new projects to “zero carbon” standards(标准). From January 1st 2019 all new public buildings in the European Union must be built to “nearly zero-energy” standards. All other types of buildings will follow in January 2021. Governments in eight further countries are being advised to apply the similar standards.

These standards are less green than they seem. Wind turbines and solar panels on top of buildings look good but are much less productive than wind and solar farms. And the standards only count the emissions from running a building, not those let out when it was made. Those are thought to account for between 30% and 60% of the total over a structure’s lifetime.

1Why is the fairy tale mentioned at the beginning of the passage?

A.To inform builders of salesmen’s trick.

B.To remind readers of a childhood fairy tale.

C.To persuade the builders to copy the second pig.

D.To attract readers to a problem of the building industry.

2What does the underlined word “that” refer to in Paragraph 2?

A.To reduce pollution. B.To construct taller brick buildings.

C.To slow global warming. D.To reach zero greenhouse-gas emissions.

3What is the author’s attitude toward the “zero carbon” standards?

    A.Confident. B.Supportive.

    C.Doubtful D.Unconcerned.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Brick Houses to be Safer

    B.Wood Buildings to be Greener

    C.The “Zero Carbon” Standards

    D.The Paris World Leader meeting

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

One Sunday morning, George Thomas, a baker in a small New England town was walking through town when he saw a young boy coming toward him, swinging(挥舞)a bid cage in the air. On the bottom of the cage, there were three little wild birds shaking with cold and fear. George Thomas stopped the boy and asked him what he got there.

The boy was happy and told him that there were just some old birds in the cage. When the baker asked him what he would do with the old birds. The boy said casually(漫不经心地)that he wanted to take the birds home and play with them. He would pull out their feathers to make them fight. He would have a really good time because he would enjoy watching these.

George Thomas was shocked by what the boy said. How could a boy be so rude to wild animals? So he continued to ask the boy what he would do to the birds when he got tired of them, because he was such a naughty and cruel boy that he was sure to be tired of them sooner or later. The boy laughed and said that he got a cat, which liked birds, so he would give the birds to his cat. The baker got more worried and decided to help set free the poor birds. So he asked, "“How much do you want for those birds, son? "

The boy looked at him in surprise, wondering if the baker really wanted to buy them. He laughed and reminded the man that they were just plain old field birds.
