二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Called an “e-broom”, Toyota’s latest mobility platform looks like a futuristic broom that users can ride to get around. Apparently, quidditch (魁地奇) fans found the concept very attractive.

1, but it is capable of helping people moving on the ground, as long as they are wearing roller-skates. The e-broom is meant to be ridden like a witch’s broom, only instead of relying on magic to take its users towards the sky, it relies on an electrical motor and a wheel at the bottom to push its rider forward at a not-so-fast speed. It’s not as impressive as we’d like it to be, but at least it’s a step toward a real life quidditch broom.

2, we don’t have much information on the e-broom. We don’t know the capacity of the motor or the battery, maximum speed or even when or if it’s going to be on market. We do know that it has a transparent cat as decoration as its tip. 3.

“This mobility platform combines people and machines, and allows users to feel the enjoyment of mobility. 4!” a Toyota press release states. 5. And those of quidditch are in particular, very excited, but unless they plan to wear roller-skates in their games, they’ll have to wait a while for an improved ride.

A.Experience first-hand mobility of the future

B.However, we don’t even know what use it has

C.No one is sure how much it is for sale and where to buy it on the market

D.Unfortunately, Toyota’s e-broom isn’t yet able to make quidditch players fly

E.Many people, especially the young, are too astonished to believe the product

F.The announcement of a futuristic-looking witch’s broom gets Harry Potter fans crazy

G.Apart from some photos and a small show of how it works during the recent Tokyo Motor Show

  • 27、The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of all schools nationwide from 13 March to 6 June 2020. According to multiple studies, symptoms of depression and anxiety among young people increased during this time since they were less physically active and spent more time sitting in front of screens.

Now, a study by the University of Zurich (UZH) has shown that the homeschooling phase also had a positive effect on the health and well-being of many teenagers. “The students got about 75 minutes more sleep per day during the lockdown. At the same time, their health-related quality of life improved significantly and their consumption of alcohol and caffeine went down,” says the study’s co-leader Oskar Jenni, UZH professor of developmental pediatrics. Because they no longer had to travel to school, they were able to get up later.

The researchers conducted an online survey with 3,664 high school students in the district of Zurich during the lockdown, asking about their sleep patterns and quality of life. They then compared the answers with a survey from 2017 with 5,308 young participants. The results showed that during the three months in which the schools were closed, the teenagers got up around 90 minutes later on school days, but went to bed only 15 minutes later on average — meaning their total amount of sleep increased by about 75 minutes a day. On weekends, there was little difference in the sleep times of the two groups.

The students in the lockdown group rated their health-related quality of life higher, and the amount of alcohol and caffeine they reported consuming was less than the pre-pandemic group.

“Our findings clearly indicate the benefit of starting school later in the morning so that youngsters can get more sleep,” says Jenni. He predicts that the positive effects on health and health-related quality of life would have been even greater had there not also been the negative effects of the pandemic on mental health.

【1】Why did the teenagers report better quality of life during the lockdown?

A.Because they didn’t have to stay up late for exams.

B.Because they got up later without traveling to school.

C.Because there were not exams at school any longer.

D.Because they had better relationships with parents.

【2】What do we know about the study by UZH?

A.It was conducted in all school students in Zurich.

B.The students consumed less alcohol and caffeine.

C.The students surveyed got 70 minutes more sleep per day.

D.On weekends, there was also much difference among two groups.

【3】What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A.To introduce a new study.

    B.To encourage studies online.

    C.To promote positive attitude.

    D.To remember a scientist.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Lockdown Depresses Teenagers

B.Teenagers Bothered by Lack of Sleep

C.Tips to Stop Staying up Late for Students

    D.School Closures Bring Unexpected Benefits

  • 28、   “Data is the new oil.” Like the sticky black thing, all those Is and 0s are of little use until they are processed into something more valuable. That something is you.

Five of the world’s ten most valuable companies are built on a foundation of tying data to human beings. Google and Facebook want to find out as much as possible about their users’ interests, activities, friends and family. Amazon has a detailed history of consumer behavior. Tencent and Alibaba are the digital wallets for hundreds of millions of Chinese; both know enough about consumers to provide widely used credit scores. Those with a good Zhima credit score, provided by Alibaba, enjoy discounts. Those without receive few offers. In other words, data are used to decide what sort of access people have to services.

That data are valuable is increasingly well-understood by individuals, too, especially because personal information is so often leaked(泄露)or stolen. The list of companies that have suffered some sort of data leak in 2018 alone reads like a roll call of household names: Facebook, Google, British Airways and so on. Such events have caused a switch in the public understanding of data collection. People have started to take notice of all the data they are giving away.

Yet few people have changed their online behavior or exercised what few digital rights they possess. Partly this is because managing your own data is time-consuming and complex. But it is more because of a misunderstanding of what is at risk. “Data” is an abstract concept. Far more solid is the idea of identity. It is only when “data” is understood to mean “people” that individuals will demand responsibility from those who seek to know them.

The fossils of past actions fuel future economic and social outcomes. Privacy rules and data-protection regulations are extremely important in protecting the rights of individuals. But the first step towards ensuring the fairness of the new information age is to understand that it is not data that are valuable. It is you.

1The example of Zhima credit scores is mentioned to show __________.

A.data help companies target their services

B.credit scores change people’s way of life

    C.Alibaba gains popularity among customers

D.people prefer to be offered discounts

2What has caused a change in the public understanding of data collection?

A.The development of companies. B.The history of consumption.

C.Cases of data leak and theft. D.Lists of household names.

3People don’t protect their data well mainly because __________.

A.they find it time-consuming and complex

B.they are not fully aware of its importance

C.they have no access to their personal data

D.they are afraid of taking responsibility

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To defend companies’ use of data.

B.To show the economic value of data.

C.To call for more regulations to protect data.

D.To advocate a new way of thinking about data.

  • 29、   Bliss (幸福) is boring! That’s a cautionary (告诫的) line I’ve heard a lot about the Common Application writing prompt (提示): “Describe a place where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?”

It’s true. Just how much can you say about big mountains or peaceful ocean waves? This is a tougher prompt  than you might think.

Part of the challenge associated with this prompt is that it is — so broad. The place is limitless and it could even be a place in a student’s favorite book.

How should you approach this prompt?

    — Figure out where you’re happiest. Where are you when you’re feeling that way? When do you truly feel comfortable in your own skin?

    — Determine why you are so happy there. Try to think of an anecdote that happened at that place. Who were you with? What was going on?

    — Use your sensory details. The first part of the prompt asks you to describe your place. This is not where you should provide analysis but rather a straightforward description with significant details.

    — Be reflective. The second and third parts of the prompt are inviting you to be analytical. This is the part of the essay that college admissions professionals are most interested in reading. This is where you will need to talk about how your place has influenced you.

    — Here's another way to approach the prompt. Think about a time when you were unhappy. Where did you go to “get happy”? Why do you go there? What’s special about that place?

If you can’t discuss why this place is meaningful to you with maturity (成熟) and perfection, you are probably better off responding to a different writing prompt.

1The author wrote “Bliss is boring!” at the beginning to suggest that __________.

A.no one in the world could have a tally perfect life

B.many students have no idea of what true happiness is

C.students should avoid talking about happiness in their essays

D.it is hard for students to produce a satisfactory essay on this topic

2What is the purpose of the article?

A.To remind students to keep an eye on the details in their life.

B.To give tips on responding to a writing prompt on the topic of happiness

C.To display basic skills for essay organization.

D.To teach students to balance facts and analysis in their essays.

3Which part of the essay will interest admissions officers the most?

A.Description of where, when and how much the experience was enjoyed.

B.Fun anecdotes about times when people felt the happiest.

C.Analyses of the sources of happiness and their influence.

D.Advice on how to get over negative feelings in daily life.

4What does the author mean by saying “you are probably better off responding to a different writing prompt.” in the last paragraph?

A.you had better live a wealthy life

B.you had better give up this writing prompt

C.you had better leave for a new place

D.you had better understand this place in a new way

  • 41、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school when Robert cried out, "A fight! Let’s go and see!"

"No," said Henry. "Let us go home quietly and not meddle with(干涉) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also my parents are expecting to have dinner with me together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me."

"You are a coward," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ sneer(嘲笑) and continued to go to school and study as usual. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him any more. Instead, he enjoyed playing with some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to a river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, and they did not even try to help him.
