二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In 2019, more than 1.4 million young people around the globe took part in the School Strikes for Climate Action protests that were largely advocated by 17-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. The inspirational young Swede, while a media favourite, is far from the first or last young person to fight for a better environmental future.

With the rise of social media in recent years, websites such as YouTube provide accessible coverage on ecological matters that quickly gather millions of views, and links to new scientific information are easily shared between peers. But, it's not just online research that exposes the truth, and it's not a distant threat either. Climate change is happening around us as we speak; an increase of droughts and heatwaves means a loss of crop production and one and a half acres of forest is cut down every second.

Of course, just because young people are now readily armed with statistics such as these doesn't mean all adults will eagerly listen to them. Many write off young activists simply due to their age, and others still aren't willing to see the environmental challenges we face, but that doesn't mean a difference can't be made.

A study on participants aged 16-24 in the UN climate negotiations revealed that adults perceived younger activists as being more trustworthy due to the lack of financial incentives (刺激)to be there. Young activists often have an independent view of what's going on and, being free from politics, they often say what adults aren't willing to.

So, it seems achieving a carbon neutral world in the fixture might depend on young determined voices inspiring experienced adults who can make a difference.

【1】Why is Greta Thunberg mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To show that the young activists are playing a part.

B.To give an introduction to Greta Thunberg.

C.To illustrate the seriousness of climate change.

D.To arouse readers' interest in environmental protection.

【2】What does the underlined phrase "write off" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Consider unimportant.

    B.Take seriously.

    C.Give up.

    D.Write down.

【3】what does paragraph 4 focus on?

    A.The way young activists work.

    B.The advantages young activists have.

    C.The contributions young activists make.

    D.The views young activists hold.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Greta Thunberg: an outstanding activist.

    B.Climate change: a matter needing everyone's attention.

C.The rise of social media makes ecological matters accessible.

D.The young arc making a difference to the environmental future.

  • 22、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    Edison and Popular Culture

Whenever we play music or go to the movies, we enjoy the benefits of Thomas Edison’s genius and hard work. Although Edison is perhaps most famous for his light bulb, his inventions in sound recording and motion pictures has contributed to entertainment industry.

After his successful development of the first phonograph in 1877, Edison and his researchers made countless improvements to the phonograph (留声机) striving for the finest sound reproduction possible. 【1】 What the public really wanted, however, was a machine to play music. Recognizing the biggest market for the phonograph, Edison began producing musical records in the early 1890s. However scratchy and rough those early records seemed, they were amazing to buyers who were hearing recorded sound for the very first time. The development of records, cassette tapes and finally digital music traces back to Edison’s early experiments with sound recording.

【2】 In October 1888, Edison intended to do “for the Eye what the phonograph does for the Ear, which is the recording and reproduction of things in motion.” Thus began Edison’s development of the kinetograph (motion picture camera) and kinetoscope (motion picture viewer).

Over the next years, Edison experimented with the making of motion pictures, constructing the Black Maria, the world’s first structure especially built to be a motion picture studio. The first motion pictures were not projected on a theater screen. 【3】 For a 5-cent coin, viewers could look through the peephole (窥孔) to see Blacksmith Scene, or the Barbershop. Although the first films lasted less than a minute, they excited audiences as much as any film seen today.

The first films were silent, but in 1895 Edison attempted to combine sound recording and motion pictures in a device he called the kinetophone. Unfortunately, this early effort at talking motion pictures proved unsuccessful. More than thirty years would pass before sound films would become widespread.

Edison wanted to invent things to improve the lives of all people, whether it was electric light bulbs to light their homes or phonographs and motion pictures to inspire their imagination. Every time we turn on a light switch or watch movie, we enjoy the gift of Edison’s genius. But true genius, said Edison, relies on “hard work, stick-to-initiativeness, and common sense”. 【4】

A.Thomas Edison’s own example of dedication and determination may be his true gift.

B.Instead, viewers looked through a peephole fixed on top of a box with the projector inside.

C.Edison managed to make the phonograph praised by most people with effort and devotion,

D.Not satisfied with merely recording sound, Edison turned his attention to another of the senses: sight.

E.Thanks to Edison, people can live a convenient and comfortable life that we couldn’t imagine before.

F.At first, Edison thought the phonograph primarily suitable only for business purposes, like the dictation of letters.

  • 23、   A year ago I lost my wonderful friend and colleague Rachael Bland. She died at the age of just 40, two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her death knocked me for six. I knew it was coming and we had talked about it—but nothing prepared me for actually not having her in my life every day. The thing was, while we only knew each other for a short period of time, she had a huge impact on me. When I got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, I made a whole new group of friends. Rachael was up there with the best of them. She understood exactly what I was going through, she shared my fears and was always there at 3 am to reassure me. She was my rock.

After Rachael died, I had a nervous breakdown. I hit numerous brick walls in the weeks and months that followed. My cancer was progressing and I fell into a dark place. I pushed it away but ignored the terror of it all and inevitably it all came crashing down around me. Great Sorrow hit me when I least expected. Her death felt like a bad dream. The emotional bit aside, one of the things I found really hard was to actually accept she died.

Rachael hoped that by starting the conversation around cancer, she could help other women avoid getting cancer too. It was her absolute determination and bravery at helping to break down taboos (禁忌) that will live on for generations to come.

Rachael showed me how to live with cancer. Even in her darkest days she was determined to show that cancer didn’t get to take over. She helped remind me to get busy living with cancer rather than worry about dying of it. She was in the bottom of my heart forever.

1What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.I was beaten six times.

B.Her death gave me the strength.

C.She was knocked down and died.

D.Her death made me very shocked.

2Why did the author hit the brick walls?

A.She wanted to end up her life.

B.She couldn’t stand the pain of cancer.

C.She had been suffering from nightmares.

D.She was too sorrowful to accept Rachael’s death.

    3What is Rachael’s wish?

A.To help women fight against fear.

    B.To assess women’s conversational skills.

C.To prevent other women from getting cancer.

D.To inspire sick people to hope for their future.

4Which of the following best describes Rachael?

    A.Optimistic. B.Weak.

    C.Humorous. D.Demanding.

  • 24、If one more person talks about the benefits of mindfulness, I will throw cabbage at them. Just kidding. But I do have lots of cabbage happily rotting away in my, kitchen thanks to the wellness obsession(着迷) that failed to keep my attention. This is a symptom of a phenomenon known as “wellness tiredness”.

Wellness is seriously big business with a worth of $3.72 trillion and a healthy annual growth of 14 percent. To satisfy this consuming desire, brands of super foods and various exercise classes crowd in. “The problem with all this constantly changing information on what to eat or which exercise class to take is that people begin to form distorted(扭曲的) mindsets towards the idea of a healthy lifestyle,” explains Dr Bijal, a psychologist at Nightingale Hospital. “The least harmful result of a distorted mindset will be confusion. The most harmful would be serious physical and mental disorders like extreme dieting or over-exercising.”

It’s little wonder that many people are beginning to reject the idea of wellness and the lifestyle it advocates. “I can’t tell you the number of wellness accounts I’ve unfollowed on Instagram,” one fitness-enthusiast friend tells me. When I ask her why, she tells me that the public pursuit(追求) of wellness has reached “the eye-roll stage”. Meanwhile, sales of fitness trackers and wearable wellness things have dropped sharply.

Speaking of gym culture, which offers classes like Hula Hoop and Yoga, it’s also beginning to show signs that people are returning to more conventional forms of exercise-some that wouldn’t look out of place on a school timetable.

The whole point of wellness is that it should become such an everyday thing that you forget about seeking it. Living a healthy lifestyle becomes a given rather than something singled out as impressive and worth applauding. Now, more people are starting to cycle to and from work, swim on lunch breaks and even try to buy old school exercise bikes.

【1】What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

A.The wellness business costs people a great deal of money.

B.People are faced with too many food and exercise choices.

C.Distorted mindsets to wellness cause harmful consequences.

D.The wellness industry has been developing at a steady speed.

【2】Why is the author’s friend mentioned in paragraph 3?

A.To inform us wearable wellness things are not popular.

B.To advocate the idea of wellness and a healthy lifestyle.

C.To tell us that online wellness accounts are hard to follow.

D.To show the public’s unfavorable attitude to wellness obsession.

【3】Why are people starting to return to traditional forms of exercise?

A.Sports such as cycling are more impressive.

B.People are treating wellness as an everyday thing.

C.Classes like Hula Hoop and Yoga are too expensive.

D.People have come to know wellness is not so necessary.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text r?

A.The Importance of Living a Healthy Lifestyle

B.Are You Suffering from Wellness Tiredness?

C.The Benefits of Mindfulness in Wellness Industry

D.What is the Real Meaning of Wellness Obsession?
