21、As I drive about the Sois in rural Thailand I catch little glimpses of things that barely register on the mind as the scenery flies by; strange things, beautiful things, sad things, interesting things. I wish I could hold on to these scenes; explore them in detail. I wish that I had the time to stop and investigate further as I’m driving by, but time is a commodity(商品) worth more than all the moneys in the world. I wish I had more.
I once had a guy wave to me as I passed him. He yelled out something, almost in greeting, as if he knew me. I wonder if we knew each other once, in another place, another time, and he recognized my soul as I drove by in the truck, and just had to yell a hello. I wish I had stopped and said hello too.
I saw two young girls, dressed in school uniforms. White blouses, blue skirts, books in hand. They were holding hands, talking, walking down the road, jostling(推,搡) each other with their shoulders and teasing each other as they strolled along. As I passed the one closest to the truck looked up. She was close enough to touch almost. Her smiling face, her clear eyes and golden smooth skin are there in my mind’s eye now. I can see her as if she were standing next to me. Once in a while her face just pops into my head. Why? Why is she still there? Sometimes I think maybe I’m a bit mad.
I stopped at a road stop on a corner one time. An old lady standing by the roadside walked over to the truck and put her hand on my arm and smiled at me. Her palm was so cool. It must have been a hundred degrees out that day. She said something in Thai and giggle (咯咯地笑) and walked away. Who was she? Why did she touch me? Why was her hand so cool? Why did I just sit there and let her touch me? I didn’t flinch (退缩) away. It was almost as if I knew her, and we were just saying a quick hello. Her cool touch almost seemed familiar; like my long dead grandmother’s soothing cool touch remembered from when I was just a little boy.
I need more time. I need to stop the truck more often, and just say hello. Things glimpsed along the road are often far more interesting and wonderful than that which seems to consume our daily lives. Slow down. Stop the truck. Get out, and say hello.

22、 It’s commonly thought that “older” movies are in black and white and “newer ” movies are in color as if there is an obvious dividing line between the two. However, as with most developments in art and technology, there isn't an exact break between when the industry stopped using black and white films and when it started using color films. On top of that, film fans know that some filmmakers continue to choose to shoot their films in black and white decades after color films became the standard. Typical examples include oung Frankenstein (1974), Raging Bull (1980), Schindler’s List (1993), and The Artist (2011).
An often-repeated but incorrect fact is that 1939's The Wizard of Oz is the first full-color movie. This misconception probably comes from the fact that the film makes great symbolic use of brilliant color film after the first scene is shown in black and white. However, color movies were being created more than 35 years before The Wizard of Oz!
One of the most important developments in color films was Kinemacolor, created by Englishman George Albert Smith in 1906. Kinemacolor movies projected film through red and green filters (过滤器) to reproduce the actual colors used in the film. The first film to use the Kinemacolor process was Smith 's 1908 travelogue—A Visit to the Seaside. Kinemacolor was the most popular in its native UK, but the cost of installing (安装) the necessary equipment put many theaters off. After years of technical development, by the late 1950s, most Hollywood productions were being shot in color. Then, the color film finally became the standard in the filming industry.
However, the black and white film still makes its appearance. True, the black and white film has left a long-lasting impact on filming. Still, audiences today always tend to associate the black and white film with classic Hollywood storytelling and also admire the bright colors of early color movies.
【1】What can we know about color movies?

B.The complex process of using colors.
C.The difficulty in installing necessary equipment.
D.The unsatisfying color effect of Kinemacolor movies.
【4】What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.The significance of the black and white film.
B.The possibility of replacing the black and white film.
C.The popularity of the black and white film among audiences.
D.The applicability of shooting classic stories in black and white.

D.That The Wizard of Oz took advantage of bright colors.
23、An important life lesson that I’ve drawn from running is to run at my own pace. It has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.
Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed. But my coach shared some valuable advice; run at your own best pace. Setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time, I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.
I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life.
Running carries its own set of expectations, including what it means to be a strong runner. But expectations also extend to other areas of life, including what people at certain life stages should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandmother.
I used to think it was young people who bore peer pressure, but it’s easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. We often make what someone else does the reference point. It’s a comparison trap.
Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run in your own way. It’s not better or worse — only different.

A.They are vital for retired people.
B.They vary at different life stages.

A.Young people often compete with old people.
B.Retired people take up bad occupations.
C.Retired people are also under peer pressure.
D.A comparison trap makes young people stronger.
【4】What message does the author mainly want to convey?
A.Retirement can’t stop old people’s dreams.
B.People should live life to the fullest.
C.People should live at their own speed.
D.Running at a fixed pace is beneficial to retired people.
24、 The secret to eating less and being happy about it may have been found years ago — by McDonald’s. According to a new study from Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab, small non-food rewards — like the toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals — stimulate the same reward centers in the brain as food does.
The researchers, led by Martin Reimann, carried out a series of experiments to see if people would choose a smaller meal if it was paired with a non-food item.
They found that the majority of both kids and adults chose a half-sized portion when combined with a prize. Both options were priced the same.
Even more interesting is that the promise of a future reward was enough to make adults choose the smaller portion. One of the prizes used was a lottery ticket (彩票), with a $10, $ 50 or $100 payout, and this was as effective as a tangible gift in persuading people to eat less.
“The fact that participants were willing to substitute part of a food item for the mere prospect of a relatively small monetary award is interesting,” says Reimann. “One explanation for this finding is that possible awards may be more emotionally inspiring than certainty awards. The uncertainty of winning provides added attraction and desirability through emotional ‘thrills’. The possibility of receiving an award also produces a state of hope — a state that is in itself psychologically rewarding.” In other words, there’s a reason why people like to gamble.
How might this knowledge be used to help people eat more healthily?
One possibility is a healthy option that offers the chance to win a spa weekend. Or maybe the reward of a half-sized portion could be a half-sized dessert to be claimed only on a future date. That would get you back in the restaurant — and make you eat a little less.
【1】What do we learn about McDonald’s inclusion of toys in its Happy Meals?
A.It may throw light on people’s desire to find a secret.
B.It has proved to be key to McDonald’s business success.
C.It appeals to kid’s curiosity to find out what is hidden inside.
D.It may be a pleasant way for kids to reduce their food intake.
【2】What is the finding of the researchers led by Martin Reimann?
A.Reducing food intake is not that difficult if people go to McDonald’s more.
B.Most kids and adults don’t actually feel hungry when they eat half of their meal.
C.Eating a smaller portion of food does good to the health of kids and adults alike.
D.Most kids and adults would choose a smaller meal that came with a non-food item.
【3】What is most interesting in Martin Reimann’s finding?
A.Kids preferred an award in the form of money to one in the form of a toy.
B.Adults chose the smaller portion on the mere promise of a future award.
C.Both kids and adults felt satisfied with only half of their meal portions.
D.Neither children nor adults could resist the temptation of a free toy.
【4】What can we infer from Martin Reimann’s finding?
A.People should eat much less if they wish to stay healthy and happy.
B.More fast food restaurants are likely to follow McDonald’s example.
C.We can lead people to eat less while helping the restaurant business.
D.More studies are needed to find out the influence of emotion on behavior.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a kid, I was always eager to know what was inside the colorful boxes under the Christmas tree. But when that curiosity was satisfied beforehand, fun would be absent.
One Christmas Eve, my sister Tina and I decided to peek at our presents before our mom got home. Since Tina was older, and that put her in charge, she opened the first present while I was ordered to stand guard at the big picture window in our front room. I was to report any suspicious activity or person, namely our mother.
I was so excited that I could barely stand still. I couldn’t keep my eyes on the window very long, either. My head moved from the window to Tina and back to the window again. I felt like I was watching a Ping-Pong match.
“All right!” Tina shouted. She pulled out an empty jewelry box. “You know what that means, don’t you?”
I jumped up and down. “Yeah, it’s my turn!”
“No.” she said. “It means that there must be some jewelry under here.” I watched my sister search through the presents under the tree trying to find one she thought was small enough to be a necklace or earrings
“Hey, that’s not fair!” I protested, stomping my foot
“Are you watching for mom?” was all that she said. I couldn’t do anything except stand guard as she opened present after present. Finally, when she had finished wrapping her last present back up, we traded places.
My heart hammered so hard that it felt like my chest was moving in and out. Tina reminded me to be careful so I wouldn’t tear the wrapping paper.
After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. “Cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones (耳机) for my stereo!” I exclaimed as I pulled them out of the box.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
