二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、W e all love bank holidays. In the UK, we only get eight bank holidays in one year, and at least five of those occur around Christmas time and Easter time! A bank holiday is a British English term. This is an official day that is decided by the government, when banks, shops and offices close for the day even though it’s a weekday—usually a Monday, and a lot of people have a day off work.

Bank holidays are different in Colombia—firstly, they are called “festivos”. There are twenty festivos for the whole country in one year! In Britain ,people get more holiday allowance(津贴)than Colombians but fewer bank holidays. There can be even more festivos in Colombia, depending on which region of Colombia you live in. This is because different regions have their own holidays. For example, some regions have a patron saint(守护神) in their region, so they have an extra festivo to celebrate that saint.

However, there are some days that are national holidays for historical reasons. There is an Independence Day celebration on July 20 every year. This is just like Bastille Day in France on July 14, or Independence Day in the United States on July 4. Other important festivos in Colombia are :Labour Day, on May 1, and Columbus Day on October 12. Columbus Day is a historical bank holiday that almost every county on the continent of America celebrates. This includes Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Mexico and the United States. It is a memorialization of the day that the Italian sailor, Christopher Columbus, first reached land on the continent in the year 1492. Many people criticize this day and say it is not something to celebrate because of the way Columbus and his teams treated the people that were already living there.

1What is a “bank holida” according to the text?

    A. An official nationwide vacation.

    B. A holiday only for the bank staff.

    C. A British traditional religion festival.

    D. A celebration for Christmas and Easter.

2What can we learn from paragraph 2?

    A. Colombia and Britain have the same number of festivos.

    B. All Colombians have the same number of festivos.

    C. Colombians have less holiday allowance than British people.

    D. People in most regions celebrate a patron saint.

3Why do many Americans refuse to celebrate Columbus Day ?

    A. Because Columbus wasn’t an American at all.

    B. Because Columbus once treated the locals badly.

    C. Because it wasn’t Columbus that found America first.

    D. Because Columbus didn’t live in the continent of America.

4What is the text mainly about?

    A. A British English term.

    B. Bank holidays in Colombia.

    C. Important festivos in America.

    D. Different bank holidays in the world.

  • 22、   We spend a third of our adult lives working and another big part preparing for our careers. Historically, work was rarely seen as a source of meaning and purpose. During the vast majority of our 300, 000-year human evolution(进化), work was in fact pretty simple. We worked to eat and avoid being eaten. Meaning and purpose came from somewhere else, like spirituality, art, religion, or science.

The idea that we are meant to find meaning at work or to find work meaningful-is a rather modern, if not postmodern, invention. Only one hundred years ago it would have been frequent to see a worker who returned from a typical workday at a factory complain to their folks that they didn’t earn much or they were worn out and rare to see that they complain they didn’t experience a sense of purpose.

Similarly, the idea that we ought to bring our “whole self” to work is a pretty novel and recent form of career advice. Its origins can be traced to William Kahn who invented the concept of employee engagement 30 years ago. His point was that employees differ in the degree to which they identify with their work role. Some see work as merely a job and clock in and out every day, without bringing their whole self to work. Work is just not a core aspect of their identity, and their concept of themselves is built on other social categories like mother, husband, American, Christian, captain of the local soccer team, etc.

Others, however, have very low psychological distance with their work role, seeing it as essentially intertwined(交融的) with who they are. They don’t just come to work, they are fully devoted to their careers and have a spiritual type of connection with their jobs. They are, it seems, almost possessed by work and are the type of workaholics(工作狂) most companies long for.

1Why did we spend much of our adult lives working?

A.To prepare for future careers. B.To find the water sources.

C.To help us evolve. D.To make us survive.

2Why did the writer mention the worker a century, ago?

A.To help us find meaning at work. B.To prove that the idea was modern.

C.To show us the bad old days. D.To complain about the experience.

3Which of the following might William Kahn agree with?

A.Employees have different understandings about their work role.

B.Every employee must bring their whole self to work.

C.To be devoted to work is a pretty novel idea.

D.Workers’ core identity is built on art categories.

4What kind of employees do most companies favour?

A.Those who see work as a job.

B.Those who identify with their work role.

C.Those who are fully devoted to their work.

    D.Those who possess experience.

  • 23、We are all born social and company to live happy and fruitful life. Healthy and supportive mutual relationships help reduce stress and promote the, physical, mental and emotional well-being by building skills like time management, assertiveness( 坚定自信), sociability and empathy.

Making friends has made me feel secure. However, I have to be cautious to pick up friends sharing similar tastes and values. In addition, having added to one’s circle of friends helps one feel supported.

It is true that finding time to cultivate relationships is all about effective time management. My busy uncle finds time to catch up with family and friends during his tea and lunch breaks. Similarly my friend Somya uses her time on her way back home from work in her chauffeur-driven car to catch up with people. The modern inventions of SMS and e-mail help send wishes for birthdays and anniversaries to show your love and care.

Assertiveness is as much applicable to relationships. My friend Mohana emphasizes that neither being a passive observer nor being aggressive helps relationships. It is assertiveness in our relationships that opens the lines of effective communication. It emphasizes helping friends in need and also strengthens mutually supportive relationships.

It is also true that assertiveness by intuition promotes discretion(自行决定权) of friends and helps Lalitha distinguish positive people from drains of energy. She can easily figure this out by the flow of the conversation, the way each feels understood, accepted and supported, and by how I feel, happy, bored or energized in the relationship. It also helps to know whether all benefit from each other’s positive aspects.

Handling stress in life is all about cultivating mutually supportive relationships and working on them. Manisha always says she feels great when sharing her feelings after a hard day with people who share similar ideas. Actually we all need someone who would not just hear us, but listen to us, and we need to cultivate the art of listening and understanding people.

    A.lonely

    B.bored

  • 24、   Staying up late doing homework is always tiring. And perhaps when we become tired, we feel the need to eat unhealthy snack food. Recently scientists have been investigating tiredness and snack food.

According to a study in The Journal of Neuroscience, people are more likely to take snacks when they don't get enough sleep.

For the study, researchers from University of Cologne in Germany gave the same dinner to 32 healthy men aged between 19 and 33. Half of the men were then sent home to bed, and the other half were kept awake in the laboratory all night.

The next morning, the participants were asked to consider how much they would be willing to pay for snack food items shown to them in pictures.

According to the researchers, all were similarly hungry in the morning, and had similar levels of most hormones(荷尔蒙)and blood sugar.

However, brain scans showed that when the sleep-deprived(缺少睡眠的)participants looked at the pictures of junk food, they released more of the "hunger hormone". This is the hormone responsible for increasing the appetite, and making us consume more.

Asked about how much they would pay for snacks, "Participants with sleep deprivation were more willing to overspend on food items than those with a good night's sleep," researchers told Science Daily.

Researchers also observed that among the people who hadn't slept, there was greater activity in the part of the brain where food rewards are processed.

The scientists think that sleep-deprived people experience changes to the hunger hormone and the brain's reward system that then leads to a stronger desire to eat snacks with high fat and calories.

"This brings us a little closer to understanding the mechanism(机制)behind how sleep deprivation changes food valuation," Professor Jan Peters, a co-author of the study from the University of Cologne, told The Independent.

    Some tips on this:

    * Listen to some soft music to relieve your tiredness.

    * Do some slight exercise for a short time when you're tired.

    * Eat yogurt or fruits to replace snacks with high fat and calories.

    * Distance yourself from snacks.

【1】What can we know from the first two paragraphs?

A.Less sleep leads to more snacks.

B.Staying up late does harm to health.

C.Tiredness is the cause of less sleep.

D.We need no snacks when we sleep.

【2】What makes people eat more junk food according to the study?

    A.Blood sugar.

    B.Food items.

    C.The hunger hormone.

    D.Fat and calories.

【3】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.People who lack sleep usually spend less on food items.

B.Listening to soft music helps people feel relaxed.

C.Exercise as much as you can when you are tired.

D.People who sleep well can get food rewards.

【4】What's the author's attitude towards snacks?

    A.Positive.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Negative.

    D.Neutral.

A video showing a traffic police officer pretending to be blind being denied permission to get on a bus with a guide dog has been drawing public attention and has led to heated online discussions about the lack of support and care for the visually impaired(视觉障碍人士). As shown in the video, wearing a blindfold, the officer wasn't allowed on the bus with the guide dog, and was told no dogs are allowed whether they're guide dogs or not. Some passengers also scolded the officer for making a scene and wasting their time, while the dog appeared very distressed.

The guide dog's owner Gao Zhipeng, who is visually impaired, told media Monday that this has been happening almost every day since he brought Taobao home in 2014and it is the same when catching a cab. And each time they were refused, Taobao would sink into depression for days.

The guide dog being denied boarding is just the tip of the iceberg, compared to the various difficulties faced by the country's visually impaired population every day when they leave their home.
