21、Few Indian festivals are as widely celebrated as Diwali, also called Deepavali, or Festival of Lights, the five-day event, which started on November 2, 2021. The ancient tradition dates back over 2 500 years.
The celebration begins with Dhanteras. In honor of the goddess of wealth Lakshmi and the god of wealth Kubera, it is marked with prayers for the family’s well-being and prosperity. Other customs include decorating home and business entrances with colorful designs, or rangolis, made using colored rice, and flowers. Since making a purchase is considered lucky, many people treat themselves to beautiful jewelry, clothing, or household goods on this day.
On the second day, known as Kali Chaudas or Narak Chaturdashi, some people rid homes and businesses of evil spirits in a traditional way. Others consider it “Choti (small) Diwali”, and use it as an excuse to start the festivities earlier. Regardless of the beliefs, everyone looks forward to the climax (高潮) of the five-day holiday — Diwali.
Diwali celebrations begin early with a visit to a place of worship, such as a temple. After that, families and friends get together to exchange gifts and sweets. For Indian residents, the real excitement starts late in the evening when entire neighborhoods take to the streets to light up the skies with colorful fireworks. The spectacular show continues until every last firecracker has erupted.
Since Diwali is celebrated by such a diverse group of people, many tales are associated with the ancient festival. Some believe that Diwali was first observed by residents of Ayodhya — the capital of the ancient Kosala Kingdom — to mark the return of King Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana, after being forced away for 14 years by the king’s mother. Others credit the celebration to the victory of the god Krishna over King Narakasura, whose association with an evil spirit turned him evil. Though the tales vary, they all celebrate the victory of good over evil and light over darkness.

23、 Long before they found their way into living rooms around, the world, computers were the belongings of institutes and corporate headquarters. After all, the huge and heavy mainframes of the 1960s might easily fill a room of their own.
The invention of the microprocessor — Intel's 4004 was the first to be made commercially available in 1971—changed all that. Manufacturers were finally able to produce machines small enough to fit into customers' homes. Yet, the question was: Could firms persuade people to actually want one there?
The story of how computers enter our homes is not one of technology, but one of marketing and design, according to writer and journalist Alex Wiltshire, whose new book, Home Computers : 100 Icons that Defined a Digital Generation, tells the industry's early history through its most influential models. "The technology was already in existence," he said in a phone interview. "But what was important was the idea of putting it into a form that could be bought and easily used.”
The very first models in Wiltshire's book were aimed at hobbyists and industry insiders. These so-called "kit" computers performed only basic functions. But the arrival of user-friendly machines like the CPET 2001 and Apple II in 1977 were signs of a turning point.
"There was a massive change around the idea of 'What if these computers were packaged, presented and designed in a form that anyone could use?' —that they wouldn't require people to learn computer languages, or to devote several rooms of their houses," Wiltshire said. "What if there were these objects that people could buy off the shelf and just plug into their TVs? That was the moment that the idea of a 'home computer' was born, and it was absolutely down to design."
【1】What can we learn from Alex's book?
A.Technology for home computers was not mature.
B.Marketing and design counted most for computers.
C.The home computer industry has a long history.
D.The writer's idea was put in the design of home computers.
【2】What is the difference between kit computers and CPET 2001?
A.Kit computers could handle complex operation.
B.Kit computers were more environmently friendly.
C.CPET 2001 was easier to use for common people.
D.CPET 2001 was better than Apple Ⅱ.
【3】What is the topping idea when designing a "home computer"?
A.Designing it like a TV. B.Designing it aimed at housewives.
C.Designing it easier to use and keep. D.Designing it used learning languages.
【4】What's Alex's attitude towards the change of home computer?
A.Objective. B.Negative.
C.Indifferent. D.Suspicious.
24、How to Teach Confidence
While it might seem like some people are just born confident, confidence is largely an acquired skill. It’s something you can model and teach other people. 【1】. Then show them how to achieve goals, and how to deal with failure when it happens. With lessons like these, you can teach the people around you to become more confident.
【2】
If you’re trying to improve someone’s confidence, be a model for how they should behave in a confident way. Act confident around them and in your interpersonal interactions. Show them confident interpersonal relations like eye contact, handshakes, and making small talk. This lets them practice in a safe environment.
Praise small accomplishments to raise a person’s self-worth.
If you’re trying to build someone’s confidence, start small. Each accomplishment they complete is a cause for celebration, even if it seems small. Be happy for your friends, kids, or students. 【3】
Give specific praise so people know what they did well.
【4】. Instead, tell the person exactly what they did well. This makes your praise more genuine and boosts the person self-esteem more by showing them their strengths.
Start with a positive statement before correcting something.
You may have to point out where someone needs to improve. This is especially important if you’re a parent, teacher, or coach. 【5】, always start by saying something positive first. This raises the person’s spirits and makes it easier for them to take the critical feedback that’s coming up.
A.Model confident behavior for people
B.If you do have to make criticisms or corrections
C.A specific praise is better than a simple “You did well”
D.Instead of feeling criticized, the person will know you’re sincere
E.You might show someone’s strengths to help them see the bright side
F.Your positive energy will teach them to celebrate their achievements
G.Start by building up their self-esteem, independent thought, and positive self-talk
