二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Young children are significantly more likely than adults to have their opinions influenced by robots, according to a new research. The study, conducted at the University of Plymouth, compared how adults and children respond to an identical task when in the presence of both their peers(同龄人)and robots.

It showed that while adults regularly have their opinions influenced by peers, something also showed in previous studies, they are largely able to resist being persuaded by robots. However, children aged between seven and nine were more likely to give the same responses as the robots, even if they were obviously incorrect.

The study asks people to look at a screen showing four lines and say which two match in length. When alone, people almost never make a mistake but when doing the experiment with others, they tend to follow what others are saying.

When children were alone in the room in this research, they scored 87% on the test, but when the robots join in their score drops to 75%. And of the wrong answers, 74% matched those of the robot.

The research was led by former Plymouth researcher Anna Vollmer and Professor in Robotics Tony Belpaeme, from the University of Plymouth and Ghent University.

Professor Belpaeme said: “People often follow the opinions of others and we’ve known for a long time that it is hard to resist taking over views and opinions of people around us. But as robots will soon be found in the home and the workplace, we were wondering if people would follow robots. What our results show is that adults do not follow what the robots are saying. But when we did the experiment with children, they did. It shows children can perhaps have more of an affinity(亲和力)with robots than adults, which does give the question: what if robots were to suggest, for example, what products to buy or what to think?”

1What did the adults do when staying with robots

A.They totally accept the robots’ suggestions.

B.They generally refused the robots’ effects.

C.They tried to persuade robots to resist them.

D.They usually compared robots with their children.

2Why did some children made more mistakes in the experiment?

A.Because children were not as clever as adults.

B.Because robots in the presence made such mistakes.

C.Because robots reflected better than human beings.

D.Because children wanted to affect the robots on purpose.

3What is Professor Belpaeme’s attitude towards the result of the experiment?

A.He is optimistic about the result. B.He doubts the result of the research.

C.He doesn’t care about the result. D.He is so worried about the future.

4What should be followed after the last paragraph?

A.What will we do to teach our children?

B.What will adults do to avoid the problem?

C.What will people do to solve such problems?

D.Why are children influenced by such robots?

  • 22、A Day in My Wheel Chair

Alex Johnson was born with a rare disorder and got his first wheelchair when he was 7 years old. When he was 11, he arranged to get a bunch of borrowed wheelchairs and then invited his teachers and fellow students to spend a day in them.

Dozens of volunteers quickly learned how complicated it was for Alex to get around the school. Balancing a lunch tray while also rolling down the cafeteria line? Super tricky. Those who participated also learned about the aches and pains Alex struggles with daily. There’s also the arduous, if not impossible, task of rolling a manual wheelchair up and down slopes.

Doors are the worst, they said, because they’re heavy and difficult to pull open from a rolling chair. And although the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifies that doorways need to be wide enough to allow a wheelchair and the person’s hands to pass through safely, but many doors in older buildings are just too narrow.

But making the world more accessible for wheelchair users is a public policy issue controlled by government officials, so Alex recently challenged the Tennessee House of Representatives to spend a day in wheelchairs. And 10 men and women took him up on it! For a full day, they worked at their desks and attended all their regular meetings in wheelchairs. The lawmakers had the same eye-opening experiences that Alex’s school pals had.

State Representative Clark Boyd said, “I expected it to be difficult, but I had no idea how frustrating it could be to just simply get around.”

Thanks to comparable wheelchair challenges around the world, more lawmakers are getting the opportunity to learn more about what it’s like for the millions of people living with a mobility disability. “My hope is that through my challenge we can make the world more accessible,” Alex said. “Together, we can change the world, one challenge at a time.”

【1】In what way were the students’ experiences of spending a day in wheelchairs and the lawmakers’ experiences similar?

A.Gaining a better understanding of what life is like for disabled people.

B.Learning that making the world more accessible is government officials’ work.

C.Learning how tiring it is to roll a wheelchair to move around the school building.

D.Understanding what it’s like for Alex to balance a lunch tray while in a wheelchair.

【2】In paragraph 3, the word “arduous” is closest in the meaning to “_________”.

    A.compulsory

    B.fruitless

    C.ridiculous

    D.challenging

【3】Why did the writer quote Clark Boyd’s remark?

A.To criticize the ADA for the narrow doors in buildings.

B.To show that Clark felt sympathy for wheelchair users.

C.To demonstrate that he had decided to change the public policy issues.

D.To convince the reader that lawmakers can make the world more accessible.

  • 23、   When Naomi Fisher took her eight-year-old son to the country park in Birmingham where she spent much of her childhood exploring with her friends, he asked why he was not allowed to go off by himself.

“I couldn’t even give a good reason why not. It’s just not done any more, nobody lets their kids do that,” said Fisher, a community architect. “I had some conversations and it seemed my generation had all experienced that kind of play from seven or eight years old and yet it had virtually disappeared.”

Fisher’s experience is not uncommon. A survey published this week reported that children typically are not allowed to play outside on their own until two years older than their parents’ generation were.

Soon after, with the help of her friend, they set up Roam, a first of its kind charity running sessions to help children with safe, unsupervised (无人监督的) play outside. At each session, up to 15 children, all under-12s, are given some ground rules-they must stay in groups of at least three at all times, for instance-before being allowed to roam (玩耍) alone for up to two hours.

Volunteers keep tabs on them and count numbers on a regular basis, but do not interfere. They also run sessions with more supervision for younger children and those with additional needs. “A lot of our families have said they’ve seen that their children’s capabilities are much better than they thought,” said Fisher.

When Roam surveyed parents, it found that although road danger and safety fears were a key reason behind why many did not let their children play alone. “The more important reason was that parents felt their child would stand out and their parenting would be judged,” said Fisher. “My biggest fear at the pilot sessions was that a member of the public might approach the children and say: ‘You’re way too young to be your own.’”

【1】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Parents giving a good reason.

B.Children playing outside on their own.

    C.Children exploring with their parents.

    D.Parents communicating with their children.

【2】What do we know about Roam?

    A.It offers children academic sessions.

B.It disciplines children to stay inside.

C.It helps children display better abilities.

D.It involves more supervision for older kids.

【3】Why do many parents refuse to let their children play alone?

A.They feel their children are too outstanding.

    B.They worry about children’s incompetence.

C.They fear negative judgment on their parenting.

D.They believe their children will break traffic laws.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.How a community architect manages to found a charity.

B.What children’s independent play means to their health.

C.What parents should do to let go of their parenting plan.

D.How a charity helps children gain the right to play alone.

  • 24、With researchers suggesting that sitting is the new smoking, sit-stand desks (SSD) have become a common tool to interrupt long sitting in an office or classroom environment. As this furniture becomes popular, conflicting opinions have arisen on whether they can work as successfully as they are intended. Dr. April Chambers from the University of Pittsburgh worked with teammates to gather data from 3 studies and published a review article listing present information on the benefits of SSDs.

“There has been a great deal of scientific research about sit-stand desks in the past few years, but we have only scratched the surface of this topic,” said Chambers. I want to gather what we’ve known so far to figure out how we can use these desks to better benefit people in the workplace.

This work was done with Dr. Nancy A. Baker from Tufts University. The review examines the effects of a sit-stand desk in the following aspects: behavior, physiological(生理的), work performance, psychological, discomfort, and posture. Their work showed that using an SSD effectively got participants to sit less and stand more and that the device made users more comfortable at work. However, many frustrations (沮丧) with SSDs came from the physiological outcomes. According to the review, physiological effects were the most studied, but there were no significant results with regards to fatness.

There are many considerations about using an SSD most effectively, such as desk height, monitor height, and the amount of time to stand. Chambers believes that the overall arrangement of the workplace or study place and the amount of work are two factors that should be further studied.

Chambers noted that present research is limited because many of the studies were done with young and healthy subjects who were asked to use the desk for a week or a month at most. Since some of the significant benefits are with heart health or muscle discomfort, it may be beneficial to perform additional studies with middle-aged or overweight workers.

【1】The arguments about SSDs mainly lie in .

    A.their side effects

    B.their popularity

    C.their practical results

    D.their original intentions

【2】Why did Chambers publish the article?

A.To call on people to stand more.

B.To suggest ways to better use SSDs.

    C.To contradict the existing opinions.

D.To find out the drawbacks of SSDs.

【3】What’s the researchers’ attitude to SSDs’ physiological result?

    A.Disappointed.

    B.Content.

    C.Positive.

    D.Indifferent.

【4】What needs to be further examined according to Chambers?

A.The height of the desk and the monitor.

B.The time people spend in standing.

    C.Behavior and psychological aspects.

D.A broader range of the participants.
