  • 21、   Mya Le Thai is a scientist studying at the University of California. She recently discovered a process that may result in batteries that last forever. Thai said she had been frustrated that the batteries for her wireless devices degrade(退化). Over time, they fail to charge fully. She decided to do something about that problem.

At first, she and her team thought about inventing a new battery. But as they experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium-ion batteries(锂电池) to last forever. Lithium-ion batteries power most wireless devices. Over time, the batteries lose the ability to hold a charge. One of the reasons lithium-ion batteries degrade is their use of nanowires(纳米线) to carry electricity. Nanowires are extremely thin. Nanowires are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries. But Thai said their thinness also makes them weak. “Nanowires break over time,” she said. “That’s why they lose capacity.”

But, Thai had a theory: The nanowires might last longer if covered with a gel(凝胶). She and the team tested her theory. The team tried many coverings for the wires. PMMA was one of them. The PMMA coated nanowires showed no evidence of damage. The results suggest that batteries could last forever, without losing charging ability. Thai hopes to continue her research to understand why this gel works so well and to see if any other gel could create better results.

Mya Le Thai told VOA she is enjoying the publicity about her discovery. She said she never expected her research to get media coverage. “It’s kind of cool,” she said. “I’m really glad people are showing interest in my work and not just in the work itself, but also in technology and energy.”

1Why did Mya Le Thai make up her mind to settle the problem about her wireless devices degrade?

A.Because her wireless devices couldn’t work at all.

B.Because she discovered a new kind of battery.

C.Because the batteries for her wireless devices couldn’t last long.

D.Because she wanted to show her new research.

2What prevents lithium-ion batteries from lasting forever?

    A.PMMA. B.Nanowires.

    C.Electricity. D.Power.

3How can the scientist make the nanowires last longer?

A.By using a gel to cover them. B.By cutting them shorter.

C.By making them longer. D.By using a gel to make wire.

4What kind of person is Mya Le Thai?

A.Generous and wise. B.Honest and wise.

    C.Honest and hard-working. D.Modest and creative.

  • 22、Buying sunglasses can leave anyone puzzled by choice. But Bose may have stuck the landing in the style department with its new Bose Frames, designed to pump music directly into your ears and work with apps to deliver walking instructions and more.

Bose Frames look better than most smart glasses already around. The Frames are black, with gold accents on the power button. Those thick arms look like a pair of designer sunglasses you'd get from some pop shops guaranteed to be out of business in a year. More than one person commented on the Frames while I wore them around town, and two of my co-workers thought they looked surprisingly cool. And that was before they knew about the built-it speakers.

The Frames sound as great as they look, at least when you compare them to the headphones that came with your smart phones. In each of the Frames' arms is a mini speaker pumping music directly at your ears without being all up in them like typical earbuds (耳塞). On the outside of each arm is another speaker designed to cancel out what the inside one is playing. The end result: music you can hear, and silence anybody nearby can appreciate. Mostly.

Of course, you shouldn't wear these indoors or in a quiet environment, like a library. Bose Frames are essentially wearable speakers, meaning they leak sound, so people nearby can still hear something.

Bose Frames are not for everyone, nor are they great for every situation-sometimes, regular old headphones are more socially appropriate. But once you get over the astonishment that you're wearing a pair of glasses with built-in speakers, you might find them becoming a seasonal addition to you. If you're in the market for sunglasses, and are willing to drop two hundred dollars on a pair, Bose Frames are a solid option for every fashion forward futurist.

【1】What impressed the author's colleagues at first about Bose Frames?

    A.The low price.

    B.The good look.

    C.The limited edition.

    D.The mini speakers.

【2】What are the outside speakers of Bose Frames used for?

    A.Avoiding leaking any sound.

    B.Connecting to smart phones.

    C.Pumping music directly into ears.

    D.Decreasing disturbance to people around.

【3】For what purpose does the author write the text?

A.To give tips on how to choose suitable sunglasses.

B.To compare traditional and high-tech sunglasses.

C.To introduce the newly designed Bose sunglasses.

D.To share the experience of wearing Bose sunglasses.

  • 23、The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.

Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草制的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.

Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species (入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says, “damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized”. Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew (紫衫) and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.

The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.”

“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton, “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”

Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”

1From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that ________.

    A. millions of people are threatened with cancer

    B. most countries see a shortage of herbal medicines

    C. about two thirds of medicinal species will disappear

    D. a number of medicinal species are in danger of extinction

2The major factor that causes the decreasing of supplies of medicinal plants is ________.

    A. over-harvesting   B. habitat destruction

    C. pollution   D. invasive species

3The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.

    A. pollution   B. other species’ invasion

    C. sustainability   D. over-harvesting

4What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Protecting medicinal plants has a long way to go.

    B. Local people don’t know how to protect medicinal plants.

    C. Ghillean Prance is optimistic about medicinal plants’ future.

    D. China has made great progress in protecting medicinal plants.

  • 24、   I might be letting my young son watch too much television. I am certainly watching too many of his programs. They can really be perplexing as they force you to think carefully about the mysteries of life.

For example, when Franklin (the turtle) wanted a pet, his parents didn’t want it to be a frog. They felt that frogs belong in a pond. Isn’t that where turtles belong?

And why is it that Little Bear’s animal friends can all talk and behave like people, but his friend Emily has a dog that can only bark and fetch? Tell me that isn’t a mystery!

Dog lovers can be cheered up by Kipper and his friends. These dogs are very human. However, the only time they wear clothes is when they put on bathing suits to go swimming. I’m confused!

Speaking of dogs, could Pluto ever be Goofy’s pet? I don’t get it! What did the great Mr.Disney have in mind?

And this is awful! The other day we watched a very nice little pig setting up a picnic. One of the foods was a big ham. Could it have been a soy (大豆) ham? Is there such a thing? I hope so!

Another thing that bothers me: What if Elmo isn’t real? He can’t be a mere puppet (木偶)! Hes got a better altitude than most people. I just keep wondering.

I think we’ll turn off the TV and go out for a walk. Maybe we’ll run into that mouse who dresses well but certainly doesn’t speak as clearly as the average bear.

【1】What does the underlined word “perplexing” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Boring.

    B.Humorous.

    C.Confusing.

    D.Curious.

【2】Why does the author think it unpleasant for a pig to eat ham?

    A.Pigs don’t eat meat.

    B.Pigs are dirty animals.

    C.Ham is too expensive.

    D.Ham is made from pigs.

【3】How does the author feel about Elmo stories?

    A.Embarrassed.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Astonished.

    D.Disappointed.

【4】The author suggests that TV mouse_______.

    A.should speak more clearly

    B.should not wear good clothes

C.should not dress better than bears

D.should speak louder again next time

  • 26、Directions: road the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

A plan to restore green spaces

The UK government has revealed a plan to protect and restore England’s wild life. It focuses on at-risk species by making canals, rivers and streams cleaner and expanding green spaces.

The new Environmental Improvement Plan sets goals to create or restore more than 5,000 square kilometres of wildlife habitats across England and restore 400 miles of rivers. It will create or expand 25 national nature reserves. New woodland will also be planted alongside rivers. At the moment, access to green spaces is not equal across the UK. Around 4% of people live more than 10 minutes away from their nearest park. The Environmental Improvement Plan aims to make sure households in England are within a 15-minute walk to a green space.

As well as helping more people to act close to nature, the plan should increase England’s biodiversity. A species Survival Fund will be set up to help some of England’s most endangered animals, such as red squirrels (松鼠) and watch rats. The Government has set targets to boost these species by 2030. There are also targets to reduce food waste, glass, metal, paper and plastic by 2028, and to improve the quality of water in rivers.

New rules mean that the Government will have to consider the environmental effects of any policy it puts forward. These goals are part of a 25- year plan that was launched in 2018. The aim of the plan is to improve the environment “within a generation ” which is roughly 25 years.

Although lots of people have welcomed the plan, not everyone is impressed. Pail de Zylva, from the charity Friends of the Earth, said it wasn’t clear enough how the goals would be met and that many of them were like promises the Government had already made but not yet delivered.
