  • 21、Ian Mercer doesnt set an alarm clock. The former Microsoft senior manager doesn’t check the weather, either. He doesn’t turn on lights, water the yard, or adjust the thermostat(恒温器). He doesnt open the curtains, answer the phone, or call his children for dinner. Theres something unique about Ians home. He has programmed it to do all these things for him.

Ian doesnt live in a typical home or have a typical lifestyle. He spent over a decade designing the systems that feature in his unique home. He bought a home automation software package and then improved it.

Now there are 79 sensors and monitors, and 48 light switches in his home. Lights turn on automatically in rooms with people in them. Even being out, Ian can also control his home remotely using voice commands or his phone in any location. That is only the beginning of what this home has been programmed to do.

It connects with online calendars, caller ID, online weather services, online address boos, and email, among other things, to get Ian through his day. For example, if there is a meeting in Ians calendar, it will wake him up, open his bedroom curtains, start and set his shower to his desired temperature. It also informs Ian about traffic conditions.

There is plenty more this home has been programmed to do. It keeps him updated on his favorite sports teams and scores. It even monitors online activity to check that Ians children are doing their homework. The dinners ready command stops operation of their computers and TVs. This is easier than asking his children o shut them down.

Ians home is unique. Most homes are not this smart, but soon more homes will be technologically advanced.

    【1What makes Ians home unique?

    A. Having more furniture than usual

    B. Being programmed with smart software

    C. Creating a traditional atmosphere for Ian

    D. Working automatically without Ians order

2What can we learn about Ian?

    A. He invented the home automation software

    B. He devoted years to improving the systems

    C. He is seeking to control his home remotely

    D. He failed to monitor his childrens homework

3What does the underlined sentence imply?

    A. Smart homes are future trends

    B. Ians home is far from satisfaction

    C. Technology of smart home is too expensive

    D. Homes smarter than Ians can be found everywhere

  • 22、Every driver loves sailing through a series of green lights without having to stop and wait at a traffic light. Now, thanks to artificial intelligence, German researchers have found a way to reduce time spent at intersections (十字路口).

Called the KI4LSA project and funded by the Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, the innovation is being tested. Scientists first studied algorithms (算法) taken from a busy intersection to learn about traffic patterns and where improvements were most needed. The new AI method uses radar sensors and high-resolution cameras to interpret traffic patterns in real time. They can determine the speed of traffic as well as waiting time and combine this with self-learning algorithms. Scientists are currently trying this out at a busy intersection in Lemgo, Germany, with encouraging results.

The intelligent lights are said to improve traffic flow by 10 to 15 percent, which results in money saved; the EU estimates that traffic jams create economic damage that adds up to 100 billion euros a year. Aside from reducing commuting (通勤) time, these traffic lights will reduce noise and CO2 emissions from cars idling (未熄火) at intersections.

Another exciting development in this research is the K14PED project, which studies pedestrians (行人) crossing intersections. Using AI, researchers can identify how many people are waiting at a pedestrian crossing and whether some of these people will need extra time to cross the street. Using a 3D points cloud, they can tell if someone has disabilities or is elderly without identifying the individual. Since pedestrian buttons that are presently at intersections cannot determine if some people have special needs or are elderly, this is a real win. Such a needs-based system could reduce pedestrian waiting time by 30 percent, which could then decrease jaywalking (乱穿马路) by 25 percent.

Testing will be done until the summer of 2022 in the German towns of Lemgo and Bielefeld, with researchers optimistic that it will be adopted by many countries. This technology is exciting news for pedestrians and drivers alike. It encourages safety, protects the environment, and may even give you more time to enjoy your morning coffee before heading off to work!

【1】What is the function of AI in the KI4LSA project?

A.To detect road conditions and noise pollution.

B.To provide real-time information about traffic.

C.To control traffic lights and the speed of vehicles.

D.To remind people of traffic rules at intersections.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Advantages of the intelligent lights.

    B.Ways of improving traffic flow.

    C.The development of artificial intelligence.

D.The effect of traffic jams on the environment.

【3】What is special about the K14PED project?

A.It has been applied to streets in many countries.

B.It ensures pedestrians cross the road quickly.

C.It helps to avoid traffic accidents with a 3D points cloud.

D.It can meet the demand of pedestrians with special needs.

【4】Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

A.The Bright Future of AI Technology

  • 23、It’s hard to imagine a visual record of the 20th century without Picasso. The Spanish artist captured everything from the horrors of war to the boundless possibilities of the human form. Even those unfamiliar with the modern art history can likely identify a few of his best-known paintings,

    The Old Guitarist

Completed: Late 1903 to early 1904

Where to see it: Art Institute of Chicago

The Old Guitarist has to be one of the most sorrowful paintings to ever capture the rt world’s imagination. The figure depicted (描绘) thin and cross-legged appears exhausted as he sits over his brown guitar.

    Garcon a la Pipe

    Completed: 1905

Where to see it: Private collection

With Garcon a la Pipe (Boy With a Pipe), we move from Picasso’s blue period to the more lively rose period. And while the figure in the oil-on-canvas portrait is clothed in blue, the background features happier shades of ochre and pink.

    Girl Before a Mirror

    Completed: 1932

Where to see it: Museum of Modern Art (New York)

If there’s a single painting that screams Picasso, this might be the one. Girl Before a Mirror is alive with color, pathos and charming shapes that take cubism to its extremes. Picasso said he preferred this painting to any of the others, according to MOMA’s founding director, Alfred H. Barr Jr.

    Guernica

    Completed: 1937

Where to see it: Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid)

Guernica is Picasso’s best-known work. Its depiction of an aerial bombing attack on the Basque town of Guemnica in April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, was a visual prelude (序曲) to coming violent act of World War II. The muted tones of gray further emphasize the shapes of humans, their arms outstretched in extreme pain. Guernica has become one of the most recognizable anti-war paintings in history.

【1】Where can we see The Old Guitarist?

    A.In Paris.

    B.In Chicago.

    C.In New York.

    D.In Madrid.

    C.The misfortune of women.

    D.The suffering of the poor.

  • 24、   Have you ever experienced such an annoying thing as it took so long to open a web page? You're watching stops every few minutes, which ruined your internet experience. But it could be a thing of the past. On June 3, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China would issue licenses for the com- serialization of 5G. It means major telecom carriers will start to provide 5G services.

The “G” in “5G” refers to the generations of mobile network technologies. 1G let us talk to each other,2G let us send messages, 3G gave us mobile data and the internet, and 4G made all of these things faster.

Now 5G promises much faster data download and upload speeds, and more stable connections. This means that you will be able to download an entire HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay between sending and receiving data. For example, when you have a video chat with your friend, there is generally a 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒) delay with 4G,but 5G will reduce the delay to 1 millisecond or less, which is almost real time.

With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid potential dangers. Meanwhile, 5G-enabled wearable devices will keep doctors constantly updated on the health status of their patients and warn them immediately if there's something wrong. Besides, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.

Though 5G will make our lives more convenient, it will not be perfect. For one thing, 5G will not “travel” far. On 4G networks, you can be 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission(传输)base and barely lose signal. But 5G will only cover about 300 meters, meaning we will need more transmitters so that we can get signals. And in order to use 5G, we will have to buy new products specially designed for 5G that are currently expensive.

1What is the function of the first paragraph?

A.To provide a background of the topic. B.To offer basic knowledge of the topic.

C.To use an example to support the topic. D.To draw readers' attention to the topic.

2According to the passage, what is likely to happen to our life with 5G?

    A.Doctors can treat more patients.

B.No drivers are needed in the near future.

C.Many advanced technologies will be further improved.

D.Children will hate playing VR games in the real world.

3What can be found when 5G is compared with 4G?

A.4G covers smaller areas. B.4G needs more transmitters.

C.5G signals can travel farther. D.5G costs higher in early stage.

4What is the text mainly about?

    A.The development of 5G.

    B.Challenges that 5G will face.

C.Benefits that people will get from 5G.

D.The difference that 5G will make to our lives.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

High school exit tests are tests that students must pass to graduate from high school. In the last few years. however, a number of states in America have dropped them. Although some states still use them for diplomas, the number is down from a high of 27 states during the testing craze promoted by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

The appearance of this phenomenon is small wonder. Researches clearly show that exit tests have little positive effects on students. A 2014 report found exit testing was associated with lower graduation rates, negatively affected labor market outcomes, and, most alarmingly, produced a 12.5 percent increase in incarceration( 监禁)rates. Exit exams, the study concluded, had tended to add little value for most students.

Exit testing relies on the following assumptions. One is that standardized testing can serve as a kind of “quality control”for high school graduates, guaranteeing that graduates are college ready. The other is that they have predicting value for future success in academic situations.

But there is little evidence. The tests don't exactly measure what they pretend to measure. For example, qualities such as intelligence, academic ability, college readiness are not determined. Those that should be developed in all young people, like responsibility, critical thinking, and empathy (移植),are not measured, either.Even supporters of exit tests have acknowledged that they don't offer reliable data.

Thus, more and more people are suggesting that exit test scores ought to be just one component of the high school diploma. Schools should consider many other records including credits earned, courses taken, activities, service, projects and other elements of academic accomplishment so that students can be evaluated flexibly. In other words, exit test scores should never be the only criterion for high school diplomas.
