  • 21、The first set of Chinese stories presented in English scripts (剧本), titled Stories of China: Performed in English, was officially published by Foreign Languages Press. Planned by the New Channel International Education Group with the participation of playwrights from China, the United Kingdom and the United States, the book provides a new way for young people to learn English while inheriting (传承) and spreading Chinese culture.

The book contains 20 English scripts in novel formats covering a wide range of subjects. Unlike the most common English scripts for young readers on the market which are based on adaptations of European and American stories, those presented in this book are unique for being based on classic Chinese stories, readapted and written in English. The book is divided into first to third grades in terms of grammar and vocabulary difficulty, making it suitable for young English learners from primary school to junior and high school.

All the scripts in the book are written by top playwrights with elegant, pure and vivid language. The scripts are provided with a summary of the story in both Chinese and English, so that readers can fully understand the plot as well as the history and culture behind it. Readers can not only improve their English skills through immersive (沉浸式) reading and performance but also appreciate Chinese culture.

Hu Min, English education expert and founder of the New Channel, said the combination of traditional culture and English teaching has become a trend, guiding young people to bring their own wisdom and deep cultural heritage to tell Chinese stories to the world. New Channel will offer special courses on Stories of China: Performed in English in its many schools across the country, and cooperate with primary and secondary schools in Beijing, Shanghai to offer English drama courses on a trial basis. • 22、   China is set to join a growing number of countries that are taking strict measures on single-use plastic items, with multiple bans expected to come into force gradually within the next six years.

The new policy, announced Sunday, will first take effect in major cities, where many of the non-biodegradable(非生物降解的)plastics found in the world’s oceans originally come. The distribution of plastic bags is supposed to stop in large Chinese cities by the end of the year, whereas smaller cities and rural areas have until 2022.Among other items are single-use straws and many disposable(一次性的)items. The effort was described as a global “war on plastic”.

Between 1950 and 2015, plastic production has risen from 2 million tons annually to 381 million worldwide, which has seen a rise in policies to reduce dependence on plastics. Extremely strict steps have been taken in many places.

Last August, the Pakistani government banned all single-use plastic bags in the country’s capital region, home to some 1.5 million people. While environmental protection groups celebrated the move, industry representatives warned it would come at a huge financial cost “They should first find new jobs for the plastic factory workers and then ban the bags,”38-year-old fruit seller Nazeer Abbasi told The Washington Post last year.

Last spring, the European Parliament voted to ban many single-use plastic items-including plates, straws and cups — by 2021. It also voted to increase recycling targets. Many E.U. member states already have built systems to encourage customers to return plastic bottle for recycling.

1What are the multiple bans targeted at?

    A.Recyclable glass bottles.

    B.Reusable shopping bags.

    C.Degradable plastic straws.

    D.Disposable plastic plates.

2How will China carry out the new policy?

A.By banning plastics once for all. B.By taking measures step by step.

C.By conducting it in big cities only. D.By performing it in small cities first.

3How does Nazeer Abbasi feel about the workers according to paragraph 4?

    A.He’s worried. B.He’s annoyed.

    C.He’s puzzled. D.He’s disappointed.

4Why does the author write this text?

A.To explain the causes of plastic pollution.

B.To offer tips about Chinese plastic production.

C.To share his own ideas about plastic recycling.

D.To introduce different bans on single-use plastics.

  • 23、Getting the “side-eye” look from your dog can make it seem like they are making a judgement about you, and some new studies suggest they really could be.

The ability to judge others’ intentions is an indicator of possessing “theory of mind” which was once thought to be unique to humans. However, new studies have shown that dogs can read human behaviour and have a preference to people who are more friendly or generous with food.

One such study published in 2023 aimed to see if dogs can tell the difference between humans who are “unwilling” or “unable” to give them a treat. 96 dogs were involved in both “unwilling” and “unable” scenarios (情境) designed for the study. Both scenarios involved a dog being placed on one side of a glass screen with small holes in it at nose-height, and an experimenter standing on the other. In the ‘unwilling’ scenario, the experimenter would hang a piece of sausage in front of the screen in a ‘teasing’ (戏耍的) manner, and approach one of the holes. But instead of passing it through the hole to the dog, they would then pull it out of its reach. For the “unable” scenario, the experimenter would again move the treat towards the hole while the dog watched, but “accidentally” drop it before they could pass it through.

The researchers observed that the dogs were much more patient, making more eye contact and staying closer to the screen after the “unable” scenario played out. In the “unwilling” scenario, however, the dogs looked at the experimenter less often, sat, lay down and wandered around more frequently.

Another study from 2021 tested for “theory of mind” in dogs in a similar way, but the dogs were able to walk round the screen to obtain the treat after witnessing the experimenter’s “unwilling” or “unable” behaviour. The main finding was that the dogs approached the experimenter significantly sooner in the unable scenario than in the unwilling scenario.

However, the researchers of the 2023 study challenged that the food dropped on the floor in the clumsy (笨拙的) manner might have motivated the dogs to approach the experimenter considering that they probably often obtain food dropped on the floor in their daily lives.

Now, more evidence has been provided that dogs distinguish between similar actions associated with different intentions. But how exactly they acquire such intention-reading abilities will be an exciting topic for future research.

【1】What is one of the new research findings according to Paragraph 2?

A.Dogs also have “theory of mind”.

B.Dogs prefer food from generous people.

    C.Human behaviours are mostly intentional.

D.Friendly animals can get food more easily.

【2】What did the experimenter do in the “unwilling” scenario in the 2023 study?

A.They acted awkwardly while feeding the dog.

B.They pretended to walk slowly away from the dog.

C.They teased the dog by fixing the treat to the screen.

D.They pulled the sausage beyond the dog’s reach.

【3】How did the dogs of the 2023 study respond to the “unable” behaviour?

A.By moving closer to the experimenter.

    B.By keeping wandering around.

    C.By ignoring the experimenter.

D.By lying still on the floor

【4】How does the experiment design of the 2021 study differ from that of 2023?

A.The dogs can watch the experimenter.

B.The dogs can go to the other side of the screen.

C.The dogs’ responses are under close observation.

D.The dogs’ habitual behaviours are under analysis.

【5】What do the dogs’ different responses in “unwilling” and “unable” scenarios suggest?

A.Dogs can tell “being friendly” from “being mean”

    B.Dogs’ intelligence is gradually evolving.

C.Dogs’ intentions can be easily identified.

D.Dogs are a lot more emotional than other animals.

  • 24、   Glenda and Raphael Savitz moved to Newton in 2016. They found themselves welcomed into the neighbourhood with truly open arms. Three months later, they gave birth to Samantha . Unluckily, she was born entirely deaf. The neighbourhood was still excited to welcome little Samantha, of course, but they were worried about her parents.

The neighbours wanted to do something to make things easier for the family. All the neighbourhood agreed to take on the responsibility of learning an entirely second language all for their youngest member. Samantha would grow up learning to “speak” American Sign Language, so her friends and neighbours would learn to speak it right along with her. The group of 18 residents employed a sign language teacher and the whole neighbourhood except Glenda and Raphael Savitz began to learn American Sign Language in a neighbour's big living room. They believed people everywhere wished to have a community with something positive around and Samantha was bringing about a reason for them to get together.

The neighbours went on learning hard and kept things secret for as long as possible. They wanted thirstily to communicate with the little girl. Finally, the time had come to show Raphael, Glenda, and Samantha what they had done. The family found themselves deeply moved by the welcoming signs of their friends and neighbours. Glenda recalled it as one of the most affecting experiences she'd ever felt. A present for Samantha would have made her grateful, and this was so much more. Now after neighbours say hello to her parents, they bend down to greet three-year-old Samantha with sign language. At every turn, in the street, the grocery store, or by the canal, Samantha feels included.

1Which of the following can best describe the neighbourhood?

    A.Generous. B.Tolerant. C.Warm. D.Prejudiced.

2What was the neighbours' decision for helping the Savitz?

    A.Collecting money online.

    B.Learning the sign language.

    C.Companying Samantha all the time.

    D.Teaching Samantha a second language.

3What did the neighbours think of Samantha?

A.She forced her parents to struggle hard.

B.She set up an example for other children.

C.She caused the situation of her family's poverty.

D.She was an affectional bond of the neighbourhood.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.Neighborhood Welcomes A Newborn Baby With Sign Language

B.Neighborhood Takes A Newborn Deaf Baby As Sign Language Teacher

C.Neighborhood Learns Sign Language To Communicate With New Family

D.Neighborhood Learns Sign Language To Comfort Unfortunate New Parents
