The brown-eyed, gap-toothed, tattooed (有刺青的) man, most likely spent 40 years farming and herding, and was probably suffering from a painful stomachache at the time when he died.

After 25 years of broad scientific research and media reports, the Iceman has certainly secured his place as “Europe’s Oldest Celebrity”. The Iceman was discovered back in 1991 with various clothing, including a coat, skin leggings (绑腿), a fur hat, and hay shoes. Due to the decomposition (分解) of the leather and fur over thousands of years, however, researchers have been unable to finally confirm specific animal species for some of the elements of Otzi’s clothes.

Understanding the choice of animals used in ancient clothing production-domestic or wild, local or imported-provides a unique chance to learn about the human past. Did the clothing reflect the social status of the wearer? Were animal skins selected just due to their availability, or were certain types of leathers and furs valuable for specific qualities?

Researchers were able to get ancient DNA markers in nine samples of leather and fur from different articles of the Iceman’s clothing. According to their study published in Scientific Reports, Otzi’s clothing choices were selective, practical and sensible. They confirmed that Otzi’s coat was from sheepskin, an identification already made in previous studies. However, the genetic analysis revealed that the sheep species sampled is closer to modern domestic European sheep than to their wild cousins, and the articles were made from the skins of at least four animals.

The analysis showed that part of Otzi’s coat was also made from a species of domestic goat that still lives in the hills and valleys of central Europe today. On the other hand, Otzi’s leggings were also from domestic goat leather, and not a species of wolf, fox, or dog as previous thought.

22、The new two-child policy is making job hunting more difficult for women when about 40 percent of them said they were asked whether they planned to have a second child during job interviews, according to a report in Chongqing.

China dropped its decades-long one-child policy in October and allowed each family to have two children. The country now has about 270 million married women of childbearing age.

This change has put millions of career women in a dilemma between family and career. Employers also face big challenges as more female workers will have two childbearing leaves, seven to eight months altogether.

A human resources website www.job.cq.qq.com conducted a survey among 500 employers and 5,000 job seekers about how the two-child policy affects the job market.

Though two thirds of employers said the policy would make no difference to their recruitment(招聘), the survey showed that more than 70 percent of job seekers believe that bearing a second child will make women less popular in the job market. Forty percent of employers said they will give priority to married women with two children, according to the survey.

Lin Xia, 29, quit her job after giving birth to her first child. She is now preparing to return to work. After several inquiries at a job fair, she found that the employers are concerned about future birth plans. "I thought it would be easier to find a job after giving birth," she was quoted as saying by the website. "I had to answer whether I will have a second child before I could get a chance for a job interview."

Liang Siqi, 23, a college graduate, said although employers did not ask her the child question yet, she will not plan to have two children. "It (having two children) will definitely affect my career and personal life, so I will have only one," she said.

Zhou Jiansong, who is in charge of human resources at a large private high-tech group in Chongqing, said the company will discuss birth issues with interviewees in order to make a better work plans. "We fully respect a women's right to bear a child or two," he said. "But you don't want them to go on a childbearing leave soon after they join your company." The experts expect more labor dispute cases concerning childbearing leave rights when bearing a second child in future.

23、At only 9 years old, Lesia Cartelli was badly burnt in a gas explosion at her grandparents’ house. The burns were so severe that her own grandfather didn’t recognize her. Lesia started Angel Faces, a national nonprofit organization offering week-long supportive retreats (休养所) for adolescent female burn victims. These retreats, for girls ranging from ages 11-19, provide seminars to help the girls heal emotionally (情感上).

“She’s like a ball of sunshine,” said Casi Smith, a 17-year-old with burns on her face she received as a baby. “Looking at her, I can see everything she’s been through. But here she is; instead of hiding, she’s helping people. To me, that is amazing. I don’t know if I could ever do that.”

As a woman burned in a gas explosion, Lesia is able to connect with these young ladies on a personal level, as someone who knows what they’re going through. Her heart for helping others motivates fellow burn victims to take control of their circumstances.

All of these women are miracles. They are blessed to have survived horrible accidents most of us can’t even imagine. Yet, surviving the incident is just the beginning. Lesia describes the period following the actual event causing the burns as a “trauma cocoon”.

And that’s where she steps in.

“I didn’t want any other girl to go through what I had gone through,” she says. “We offer a place where the girls can suffer less pain and begin to really heal.”

24、   Earthworms don’t move fast. But humans can accelerate the worms’ spread. Fishermen often use invasive(蔓延性的) earthworms to catch fish. Many have introduced invasive earthworms to rivers, streams and lakes previously unexposed to these animals. Gardeners who use earthworms to make their soil rich may unknowingly introduce invasive ones. The worms even give rides in the mud on wheels, potted plants and road materials shipped around the nation.

But they’re not everywhere yet. In the Great Lakes region, “20 percent of the land is earthworm-free,” says Cindy Hale, a research biologist. Of the remaining 80 percent of land, half of the land has fewer than two earthworm species-meaning there isn’t yet too much impact on the ecosystem, she explains. For these regions, she says, now is the time to take action. According to Hale, educating the public, especially fishermen, is one approach to stopping the spread of invasive earthworms. Identifying which lands are currently earthworm-free is another.

Ryan Huefimeier, a program coordinator for Great Lakes Wom Watch, has been working on a model that will help create large maps of areas with minimal(最小的) or no damage from earthworms. Ultimately, landowners can use it to identify earthworm activity on their property. once identified, lands with minimal or no earthworm damage should be protected.

But scientists suspect that once invasive earthworms arrive they can’t be removed. And even if all could be, affected forests might never return to the way they were. “It’s very much a story of learning to live with them,” concludes Lee Frelich of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Forest Ecology.

Forest ecologists have called earthworms “ecosystem engineers” because they can change or create habitats that otherwise would not be present. Whether this is a good thing depends on the situation.
