  • 21、Rene Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He’d hiked the park numerous times. But when hiking along a new path, the 45-year-old was lost.

As the day faded into darkness, his concern turned to fear. With only a little water in his backpack and 10% battery remaining on his cellphone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour trip he’d planned.

Compean climbed to a spot where he found one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost,” he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. The shot showed his legs hanging over a rock face. All Compean could do then was wait. The temperature was dropping fast. Dressed only in shorts, and a sweatshirt, the hiker was chilled to the bone. He hugged himself into a tight ball. And after spotting two mountain lions, he spent the night on high alert.

Sixty miles away, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a posting from the police, showing an image of a man’s legs. The search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo, hoping someone might recognize the location.

“I’ve always loved looking for where photos are taken,” Kuo says. He frequently tries to identify where movie scenes or commercials were filmed. He’s often successful. When he saw the image, he automatically pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. “There’s an amazing amount of information you can get from satellites,” he says. The first thing he noticed in Compean’s photo was plenty of greenery. After comparing it to the satellite map, Kuo realized something: “He’s got to be on the south side because there’re not any green valleys on the north side.”

That finding led him to an area that looked like the territory in the image. The final step was cross- referencing the original photo with 3-D images of the area. The locations matched!

After spending 27 hours in the wilderness, Compean was found.

Compean’s story probably would have ended differently had it not been for the man with strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail.

【1】What caused Compean to get lost on the hike?

    A.The thick forest.

    B.The unfamiliar route.

    C.The coming of nightfall.

    D.Low battery on the phone.

【2】Kuo was able to offer help because of ______.

    A.his photo reading ability

    B.his sense of responsibility

    C.his professional experience

    D.his familiarity with the area

【3】What can we learn from this story?

    A.One good turn deserves another.

    B.Chance favors the prepared mind.

C.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

D.There’s no such thing as useless knowledge.

  • 22、I was recently surfing the Internet when I came across a collection of strange beach photos where everyone had a cloth wall surrounding their little patch of sand. I had never seen anything like it before, and I was interested in it. So I started searching all sorts of phrases that might throw light on the mystery of Polish beach separators.

I found a site on Poland’s affairs that actually covered this “phenomenon” in details. According to the site, beach separators have been a part of Polish beach-going culture for a long time, but have recently been getting a lot of attention online, after foreign tourists started posting photos on social networks.

Beach separators vary in size according to the size of the group. You’ll see tiny ones only surrounding the space around a single beach towel, and giant ones separating a large part of the beach. They weren’t designed to protect their users from prying(窥探)eyes. It’s no secret that strong winds are very common on the shores of the Baltic Sea, so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers to enjoy sunbathing without having their belongings blown away, or sand blown in their faces.

However, in recent years, people have begun criticizing them. During the summer, beach separators are placed so close to each other that a person can hardly pass between them, let alone find a place to put their own beach towels. This creates a problem for foreign tourists unfamiliar with them, who just want a place to lie down on the sand. And thus they can easily create all kinds of conflicts due to the lack of space. For example, some people leave the beach for hours but leave their separators in place to make sure that their space doesn’t get occupied by someone else.

Having visited a fair number of seaside resorts(度假胜地)across Europe, I admit that I have never seen anything like this before.

1What attracted the author’s attention according to the first paragraph?

    A. Some phrases   B. The cloth walls

    C. The sand patches   D. The colorful stones

2Why did the beach-goes set up separators?

    A. To attract others’ attention   B. To keep themselves in privates

    C. To stop winds disturbing them   D. To protect themselves from sunburn

3What seems to be the problem with beach separators?

    A. They cause plenty of garbage

    B. They make the beach overcrowded

    C. They leave their separators unattended

    D. They lead to many crimes against foreigners

4What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

    A. To encourage the local tourism in Poland

    B. To introduce a kind of Polish beach culture

    C. To discuss the possibilities of solving the beach problem

    D. To urge the tourism department to face the beach problem

  • 23、   Every two or three months, Thyago Ohana goes out on the busy streets of Vienna with a sign saying “Free Hugs”. The handsome 32-year-old Brazilian, who works in international trade at India’s Vienna embassy, chooses a popular site, like the historic shopping street, Kaemtner Strasse. There he opens his arms to anyone who wants a hearty embrace (拥抱).

He does it because back in 2012, when he was feeling very stressed and anxious during a visit to Paris, a stranger gave him a free hug. He’s never forgotten how it filled him with unexpected calm and joy.

For those who take up his offer, the hug makes them laugh and smile. But sometimes it does more, as when an elderly woman in a tour group stopped and watched him. The group moved on, but she remained and asked, “Can I have a hug?” “Of course you can!” said Thyago who wrapped his arms round her. When they broke their embrace, she kept holding onto his shoulders and looked into his eyes. “Thank you,” she said. “I can’t remember the last time I was hugged this way.”

It’s a memory that still makes Thyago emotional. “It was a really powerful moment of human connection. It’s why I keep doing it.”

Of our live senses, our sense of touch is the one that is most easily taken for granted. “A child can be born blind or deaf and they will grow up just fine,” says David J Linden, author of Touch. The Science of Hand, Heart and Mind. “Yet if a baby is lacking in loving social touch for the first two years of life, then all sorts of disasters unfold.” That’s one reason why when babies are born, they are now usually placed on their mother’s skin.

Linden says however you do it, “maximizing touch in your life is a good thing”— whether holding hands, petting a dog, going to the hairdresser, hugging our kids, our partners or even a stranger.

1Why did Thyago Ohana offer free hugs to strangers?

A.He longed for calm and joy.

    B.He felt stressed and upset.

C.He wanted others to feel connected and cared.

D.He hoped to help others cure their diseases.

2What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 suggest?

A.Our sense of touch isn’t so important.

B.Our sense of touch is undervalued.

C.Our sense of touch does no good to us.

D.Our sense of touch is thought highly of.

3What does David J Linden think of social touch?

A.The way of offering social touch counts.

B.Offering hugs is the best way to get social touch.

C.Blind kids will be cured as long as they get enough social touch.

D.Many problems can be tracked back to babyhood short of social touch.

4Where is this text most likely from?

A.A health magazine. B.A research paper.

C.A guide book. D.A biology textbook.
