  • 21、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项.

By now, we are all aware that social media has had a tremendous influence on our culture, in

business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friends’ new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?

Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.

Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.

Also, what you carelessly post on the Net can come back to trouble you. Revealing( 泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable(易受伤害的)to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Web before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.

Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user

to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure

they do not fall victim to online dangers.

【1】Paragraph 2 mainly shows that social networks _________.

  • 22、There is something to be said for being a generalist, even if you are a specialist. Knowing a little about a lot of things that interest you can add to the richness of a whole, well-lived life. Nowadays society pushes us to specialize, to become experts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of study or research. There is a great deal of pressure to master one’s field. You may pursue training, degrees, or increasing levels of responsibility at work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.

Some people seem willing to work around the clock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken a sense of freedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people. Mastering one thing to the exclusion(排除) of others can hold back your true spirit.

Generalists, on the other hand, know a lot about a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broad perspective into specific fields of expertise. The doctor who is also a poet and philosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.

Things are connected. Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are. My editor Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several history books. She has decided to study Chinese history. Fascinated by the structural beauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested to learn more Chinese philosophy. “I do not know where it will lead, but I am excited I am on this pursuit.”

These expansions into new worlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin to see the interconnectedness of one thing to another in all aspects of our life, of ourselves and the universe. Develop broad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to explore and enjoy.

【1】The specialists mentioned in Paragraph 2 tend to _________.

    A.treasure their freedom

    B.travel around the world

    C.spend most time working

    D.enjoy meeting funny people

【2】According to the author, a superior doctor is one who _________.

A.is a pure specialist in medicine

    B.should love poetry and philosophy

C.is fully aware of his talent and ability

D.brings knowledge of other fields to work

【3】What can we learn from the example of Toni?

    A.In-depth exploration makes discoveries possible.

B.Passion alone does not ensure a person’s success.

C.Everyone has a chance to succeed in their pursuit.

D.Seemingly unrelated interests are in a way connected.

【4】What could be the best title for the passage?

    A.Ways to Become a Generalist

    B.Turn a Generalist into a Specialist

    C.Be More a Generalist Than a Specialist

D.Specialist or Generalist: Hard to Decide

  • 23、Everybody knows that reading nonfiction books can help them become more determined and build routine. And this improved lifestyle will reduce their anxiety. When it comes to fiction, on the other hand, people often dismiss the idea.【1】

The substantial benefit of reading fiction is that it will help change your perspectives. When you read a self-help book, you often consume a series of lessons with examples and practical advice. 【2】 Fiction, in contrast, gives you access to the struggles, and ideas of various characters. The exchange of information is multi-aided. And once you start considering conflicting views of a particular event, you’ll realize that you can’t control everything.

【3】 When we’re dealing with daily stress factors, we feel like the world is falling upon us. In a fictional novel, the characters might experience the same troubles, but we’re removed from them. As such, we have a birds-eye view over what’s happening in the story. And this view is what we need to reduce our anxiety in the real world.

Fictional stories are also a great way to grasp the power of change-both in the story and in your life in general. When you’re reading a story, you’re following a journey, and developments in the fictional universe. These changes are imaginary. 【4】 In the Alchemist, for example, the main character is traveling for months to find a treasure. He believes that finding the prize will give him joy. Throughout his voyage, he experiences many setbacks, and his vision of the treasure changes. The evolution of the boy in The Alchemist is a reflection of our life. 【5】 But after many trial and error lessons, we realize that our heart wasn’t in it.

A.We want something and we spend years chasing it.

B.But they often mirror events that could happen in real life.

C.We also experience many failures when pursuing our dreams.

D.Consequently, most of the knowledge is passed on one-sidedly.

E.Reading nonfiction is a well-established weapon against anxiety.

F.Fiction gives us a rare chance to see the entire world from distance.

G.In actual fact, reading fiction can also help you overcome your anxiety.

  • 24、When I was 7 and Stevie was 6, our parents taught us how to play chess and other games. Playing games was our life back then. Stevie and I were very competitive in everything.

We got older and better so our games were more intense, but also more exciting. The strange thing is that I enjoyed the games vastly and was happy for my brother when he won. But afterwards, I felt my well-being threatened, and then my confidence suffered.

When I was 10 years old I wanted to be successful at my talents. One day, a light came on in my head. I had to find something Stevie couldn’t do. It would have to be unique in every way. Before long, I got Jimmy Nelson’s record on “How to Become a Ventriloquist (腹语师)” and I practiced faithfully every day. After sum vacation, I did my first show for my class. The response was favorable. I performed for family get-togethers and did shows on a number of occasions to practice my new skill.

It isn’t easy learning ventriloquism. The difficult part was developing the voice, because at first, it was soft and hard to hear. I memorized the routines and performed more. With time, I got better responses. The loud laughter was nonstop, in addition to the applause.

Four years later, my mother purchased a professional ventriloquial figure, which I named. Freddie O’Sullivan. He was lifelike, with moving eyes, moving eyebrows, and could stick out his tongue. Treating Freddie like a real person enhanced my performance.

In college, Freddie was well known. He would tell people that he was the only guy that could sleep in the girl’s dormitory. Over the years, I won many talent awards.

One time, an elderly man looked at Freddie attentively and asked him where he got his trousers. The audience nearby had tears in their eyes. I didn’t know what was going on until I was told later the gentleman hadn’t spoken for 20 years.

Thanks to my brother, I created a lifetime with Freddie.

【1】How did the author feel at first when Stevie won a game?

    A.Delighted.

    B.Confused.

    C.Depressed.

    D.Surprised.

【2】Why did the author decide to learn ventriloquism?

A.To have a special talent better than her brother.

B.To record her intense and competitive childhood.

C.To gain her parents’ favor in family get-togethers.

D.To bring joyous laughter to people around her.

【3】What do we know about Freddie O’Sullivan?

    A.Freddie trained the author professionally.

B.Freddie inspired an old man to restart to talk.

C.Freddie took the place of the author’s brother.

D.Freddie disturbed others in the girl’s dormitory.

【4】According to the passage, which words can best describe the author?

    A.Generous and grateful.

    B.Modest and responsible.

    C.Patient and warmhearted.

    D.Sensitive and determined.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I looked around at the other patients waiting to see the doctor. Maybe they all had more romantic plans for the evening on this Valentine’s Day, but for now the group seemed anti-social. Three people had their heads down, staring at cell phones. Another was absorbed in a magazine. The receptionist tapped at her computer. Everyone was in their own little world.

But I couldn’t judge them for it. I would probably be buried in my cell phone too—if I hadn’t forgotten to charge it before I left home. It would have been nice to strike up a conversation to pass the time on this day, a day of love and friendship. Instead I sat patiently in my plastic chair as a couple of new people took distant seats.

“Roberta? The doctor’s ready for you,” the nurse called. At least I’ll have some kind of human connection, I thought.

My checkup went well, and I breezed out of the office to my little Honda in a space right out front. I got in and tured the key. Nothing. Oh, no. Not again. I’d sent the car to the garage several times already for this very problem and thought it had finally been fixed.

I reached for my cell phone to call AAA — then remembered. It was dead, like my car. I would have to use the phone inside. A few people glanced up when I came back into the waiting room, then quickly went back to what they were doing. I went straight to the reception desk, but the receptionist was not there. So I tured back to the people in the waiting room.

“I wouldn’t normally do this,” I said to the group, hoping that I sounded apologetic. Several people tured toward me to listen. “But my car won’t start …”

The nurse popped her head into the room. “You in trouble, Roberta?” she said. “I’ll go and take a look.” I followed the nurse outside. As I passed through the door, I felt someone was behind me.
