二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The ruins of a Maya city have been discovered in Guatemala with the help of the remote sensing technique LiDAR. This lost city envelops sites like Tikal, Holmul, and Witzna, but shows that these famous areas are a small part of this lost urban network.

Hidden under the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve site, more than 60,000 human-made features — homes, canals, highways, and more — have been identified in aerial (从飞机上的)images collected by some international researchers headed by the PAGUNAM Foundation, a Maya cultural and natural heritage organization. Those have experts rethinking the outlines and complexity of the Maya Empire.

These ancient peoples obviously created these imaginative cultures based on their known relics (遗迹), but the new research has suggested that the size of this lost society is far beyond what experts imagined. The findings will be explored in a one-hour documentary called “Lost Treasures of the Maya Snake Kings”, to be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel.

This breakthrough was possible thanks to LiDAR sensors, which can survey lands in 3D by bouncing pulses off the ground from unmanned air vehicles and others. LiDAR is exceptionally useful for detecting archeological(考古的)sites, as it gets through jungles and other features that hold up exploration on the ground. The technique has made many discoveries become a reality in recent years. For instance, major finds at Angkor, Cambodia and Caracol, Belize can explain what it did. The final goal is to survey Guatemala’s lowlands with it.

“There are entire cities we didn't know about now showing up in the survey data,” Francisco Estrada-Belli, one of the lead archeologists on the project, said in Nat Geo's coming documentary. “There are 20,000 square kilometres more to be explored and there are going to be hundreds of cities about the mysterious people who built this urban network there that we don’t know about, and we will push back the frontiers with the technology,” he added.

1What does the underlined word "Those" in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Jungles. B.Human-made features.

    C.Researchers. D.Aerial images.

2What does the author want to convey in paragraph 4?

A.The working principle of LiDAR sensors.

B.The process of researching Maya civilization.

    C.Great importance of Guatemalans lowlands.

D.LiDAR’s contribution to discovering the relics.

3Which words can best describe the lost Maya city?

    A.Small and hidden. B.Famous and high-tech.

C.Vast and complex. D.Fully-explored and imaginative.

4What will the archeologists do next?

A.Continue to explore the unknown. B.Upgrade the LiDAR technology.

C.Study the documentary carefully. D.Build a massive urban network,

  • 22、   We all regard receiving presents as a pleasant experience and yet it can be one of the most awkward situations. It is often difficult to look pleased when you receive a gift which is entirely useless or the wrong size.【1】 However, you have no right to change an article purchased just because it does not fit or is not to your taste. Worse still, the agreement on the sale is between the person who bought it and the shop.

So you will have to tell your favorite aunt that the T-shirt does not fit. But an exchange is not always that simple because there has to be a good reason for it. 【2】 For example, if the buyer was told that a switch was voice-operated and later found out it was not, then action could be taken. You would have the right to return it and get the money back.

But if you are returning something, no matter what the reason is, you will be expected to have proof of purchase. If the receipt cannot be found, then it is possible to use another proof of purchase such as a credit card receipt. 【3】

Many big stores have a much more tolerant policy towards returns and see it as a gesture of goodwill to exchange goods without question. Stores including Marks & Spencer are well known for their “no argument” policy on returned goods. 【4】

So if a shop refuses to exchange the goods or to offer a refund, the seller is likely to be within his legal rights unless there is something wrong with the goods. In that case, the boot is on the other foot. You have every right to demand a cash refund or a replacement, but only if you have returned it within a “reasonable” time.

【5】 Some shops and stores expect things to be returned within a week of purchase, while others may permit a much longer time limit. In any case if you return a thing after what is considered a “reasonable” time, then all you are legally entitled to is the cost of repair.

A.You should make clear what your legal position is before returning goods to the shops.

B.Unfortunately, the law does not explain what is meant by “reasonable”.

C.If all of these have been lost, you may have to rely on a witness.

D.All you can do is exchange it after your friend or relative has gone home.

E.It is unlike anything you would buy for yourself.

F.However, shoppers should remember this is a privilege, not a right.

G.Either the thing has to be broken or unsuitable for the job it was intended to do.

  • 23、 On New Year’s Eves, I would reflect on my best days of the year. Sometimes they were the days I expected. Parties, vacations, weddings. But more often, the real best days weren’t the obvious ones. They were marked by the ordinary: a long conversation with a friend or an unexpected visitor.

The problem with these best days was that they went by without me realizing how special they were. Could I find a way to know when the best days were coming and really feel them as they happened?

So I tried to declare a best day in advance. Even if it felt ridiculous, this effort to make what seemed to be common feel extraordinary usually worked. Staying up chatting until late at night or going for a weekend run through a park in the sunshine felt as wonderful as I had hoped it would. Mundane experiences felt different when I marked them as such.

Marking experiences this way is one key to happiness, said Dr. Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist, the director of the Harvard Happiness Study. “Often we’ll remember the things that more emotionally loaded as opposed to the neutral, the flat, the boring. That’s why you probably can’t remember what you had for dinner last Monday — unless it was something.”

Looking back at 2021, I realized that I was too busy following the news and wishing my would go back to normal. But lately I’ve found the unhappiness during the pandemic made unhappy before, too. The loneliness that I worried at times might become a permanent area of adulthood. They were excuses I made as I waited for something to change.

We can’t wait anymore. The stress we feel now isn’t going to magically disappear, just as it never would have before the pandemic. There’s only one thing we can control: How are we going to live in it? Why not try to have a best day right now, maybe even tonight? So I’m going to go back to my practice of declaring a best day in advance. I’ll start by declaring today or tomorrow or next Monday one of the best days of 2022. I’ll decide to do something I enjoy — it could be as simple as having some friends over or going for a walk.

【1】What does the underlined word “Mundane” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.specific

    B.ordinary

    C.occasional

    D.special

【2】Why does the author mention the words from Dr. Robert Waldinger?

A.To prove what the author tried to do was right.

B.To spread the knowledge about the happiness study.

C.To prove we can’t remember the boring and flat information.

D.To convince readers of the importance of the happiness study.

【3】According to the passage, what attitude should the author have towards negative emotions during the pandemic?

A.Believe these emotions will disappear in the future.

B.Realize these emotions are special in this period.

C.Believe these emotions will not influence his life.

D.Realize these emotions exist in other periods too.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

A.You Can Wait For the Best Day.

B.You Can Make Any Day the Best Day.

C.You Can Own the Emotionally Best Day.

D.You Can Recall the Best Day.

  • 24、Once upon a time, science fiction was just a style among other styles. There were crime stories, there were horror stories, there was literary fiction, and there was science fiction. But today science themes dominate these other styles. It's difficult to think of much modern crime, horror or “serious” fiction that doesn't involve science.

And its not just books. With every second movie and computer game having a sci-fi element, science fiction seems to have controlled our entire entertainment culture. It's clear that if we want to define science fiction, we should relate it to the role that science plays in our lives.

Although some experts have claimed to be able to trace sci-fi back to ancient times, it is more reasonable to find it in initial form in the 19th century, when industrial societies arose. One of the features that set industrial societies apart from other kinds was the increasing part that science played in everyday life. Factories with vast machines turned out huge quantities of goods, which were transported by trains, motor vehicles and ships all over the world. Cities were built on the back of technology, with electricity in homes and hospitals helping everyone to lead healthier, more convenient lives. All of these changes had great effects not only on people's real lives, but on their imaginative ones.

Writers began to describe these changing physical and mental landscapes, eventually giving science fiction a large and devoted fan base of especially young readers, who found that it spoke to their curiosity about the future that science would create.

But sci-fiction reflected fears about science more than it did hopes. These typical early science fiction novels might be a UK novel like H. G. Wells' The War of the worlds(1897). With great skill, Wells played upon the fears of technology by imagining Earth under threat by a civilization-that of men from Mars.

The science fiction of today expresses the impact of the computing revolution, robotics and our environmental challenges, while it is less concerned with “little green men from Mar” and other themes of past sci-fiction.

Given that science, technology and polities are always intertwined, contemporary science fiction often has a great deal to say about power. Many recent novels-like American Cory Doctorow's Little Brother(2008)-are concerned with government and security service “conspiracies(阴谋)” against the people, particularly as the revelations of whistleblowers like Edward Snowden sink in. This can give sci-fi writing a “skeptical(怀疑的)” feel.

This underlines one of the features that remains constant between the beginnings of the empire of science fiction and its state today.

As then, so now: We want to read about how fearful the future will be, not how it will be a paradise.

【1】According to the first paragraph, we know that ________.

D.People's fears about science rather than hopes.

【3】According to the passage, what do we know about the early science fiction?

A.It aroused people's curiosity of science on daily life.

B.It intensified people's worries about the social problems.

C.It promoted people's understanding of the true value of science.

D.It conveyed an atmosphere of imaginary anxieties to people.

【4】Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.Despite the content, the theme of science fiction remains the same.

B.The fear of outer space attack has long been a worry among people of times.
