  • 21、Camp Ballibay for Fine & Performing Arts

Camp Ballibay is a summer arts camp that offers engaging programs in theater, art, dance, rock, and media for young artists at all levels.

Three hours from New York City, on a beautiful Pennsylvania mountaintop, is the summer camp for creative, independent-minded kids.

With never more than 160 kids, and always at least 40 adults, it’s an ideal community for fun and learning: warm, diverse? and accepting.

80% of the kids come for more than one summer, and 25% of the camp community has been coming for more than 5 years.

We offer 3 & 4 week general programs, where teens design their own program days, choosing from any and all of our activities. We also have 2 & 3 week programs with a visual arts focus, 2 week rock music camps, and 2 week intensive dance programs.

    Q & A

What type of teen attends your program?

We provide a warm and safe space for a lot of special kids who don’t necessarily have an easy time finding their “group”, because they are young artists, different thinkers, free spirits, super-shy, etc... When the right kids come to Ballibay, they know they are among “their people”, often within minutes of arriving on campus.

What is special about your program?

Ballibay is a unique environment for personal and artistic growth. We believe strongly in non-competition. There are no contests, no awards, no pressure to do or to be anything or anyone in particular. We attract the artist, and the different thinker.

1How many of the teens have come to Camp Ballibay before?

A.Half of them. B.Most of them.

C.75% of them. D.A quarter of them.

2What can the teens who attend general programs do?

A.They can choose either visual arts or dance programs.

B.They can stay for two weeks learning everything.

C.They can decide for themselves what they want.

D.They can design anything based on their interests.

3According to Q&A, which of the following best describes Camp Ballibay?

A.A friendly atmosphere with no pressure.

B.An attractive place with many challenges.

C.A competitive environment for artistic growth.

D.A unique summer camp for exploration of arts.

  • 23、   Next time you find yourself tending to your flower garden, you may want to stay quiet. The flowers are listening.

Israeli scientists discovered that the plants hear bees approaching and attempt to lure them in with sweeter nectar (花蜜). In several experiments, they found that playing audio recordings of buzzing bees around certain flowers will cause the sugar concentration in the nectar to rise by about 20% in less than five minutes. Such a rapid reaction by plants to sound had never previously been reported. Just to compare, the researchers also tried a higher frequency noise-like that made by a mosquito or a bat-and the flowers did not respond.

The authors point out that the behavior is actually in line with the natural order of things, considering that a plant’s ability to sense its environment and respond to it is critical for its survival. So, it would seem that plants have some sort of consciousness.

This is not the first time that plants have reacted to the sound around them. In a 2009 study, the researchers found that women’s voices help make plants grow faster. In that experiment, tomato plants were found to grow up to two inches taller when they were tended to by a female gardener.

What if we told you that a potato chip bag left on the floor of a break room could listen in on office gossip? As people were talking around the potato chip bag, they were sending tiny sound vibrations (振动) into the air. Those vibrations then hit lifeless objects around the room. Now imagine if you had a camera that was zoomed in on one of those objects extremely closely. In theory, you could actually see the object move along with the vibrations. You could then feed that video into a computer program that could translate the vibrations and you can play back the audio of the conversation that just took place.

So the next time you're at the botanical garden or in a grocery aisle, careful what you say. Someone-or something-might be listening.

1Which of the following best explains "lure" in Paragraph 2?

    A.Shut B.Attract C.Trap D.Lead

2What is vital for plants to survive?

A.The soil depending on to grow in.

B.The audio recordings played to them.

C.The identification to the sound frequency.

D.The power to sense and react to the environment.

3What can speed up the growth of plants?

A.The women's voice. B.The strength of the vibration.

C.The species of the young plant. D.The number of the music played.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.Plants may have the ability to listen.

B.Sound vibrations can be processed into an audio.

C.Buzzing bees can increase the production of nectar.

D.The frequency of vibration determines plants’ growth.

  • 24、   It’s safe to say that OLED displays are the gold standard on smartphones these days. Some OLED panels are better than others, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra features what may well be the best one to date — the device’s display is definitely the most power efficient. In fact, Samsung developed a new ultra-low-power OLED display for the new phone, and it reduces energy consumption by up to 16%.

The way Samsung did this is a little technical. OLED displays in general don’t require a backlight like LCD displays. Instead, each individual pixel(像素) is made from an organic carbon-based material that lights up when electricity is applied. OLED displays are made up of a range of layers, which serve different purposes. The core of the new OLED display tech is that Samsung found a way for electrons to flow faster between these layers, while at the same time creating a brighter light.

The power-consumption savings will be put to good use, as 5G phones can take up a little more energy than non-5G phones.

It’s important to note that the new display tech is only available on the Galaxy S21 Ultra — not the standard Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+. All three of the devices offer up to a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 1,440p resolution(分辨率). And while the standard Galaxy S21 and S21+ have refresh rates that vary between 48Hz and 120Hz, the Galaxy S21 Ultra can go as low as 10Hz, which also helps save on energy consumption.

Samsung has been a leader in display tech for a long time, and it looks like that will continue well into the future. The company says that it holds 5,000 patents that involve the use of organic materials for displays. Hopefully, this new tech will be brought to lower-end phones over the next few years, or at least to the entire Galaxy S22 series next year.

【1】What is the advantage of Samsung’s new tech?

A.It makes electrons flow faster and light brighter.

B.It requires an organic carbon-based material.

C.It makes the OLED display more functional.

    D.It has a new ultra-low-power OLED display.

【2】What makes the new display tech unique on the Galaxy S21 Ultra?

A.Changes that differ from other devices.

B.High resolution and low refresh rate.

    C.Standard modern equipment.

    D.Low energy consumption.

【3】What can we infer about Samsung display tech from the last paragraph?

A.Its display of patents relates to organic materials.

B.It has just become the leader in display technology.

C.It will be used on low-end phones over the next few years.

D.It will definitely be used in the entire Galaxy S21 series next year.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.Samsung has developed the most popular new phone.

B.The Galaxy S21 Ultra may have the best features up to now.

C.The difference among the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+.

D.Samsung’s new display tech makes the Galaxy S21 Ultra even more power efficient.
