21、Around the world, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals are enlisting (入伍) to fight the new coronavirus. Where there is a need, these courageous individuals are stepping up to the plate and offering their expertise even though they have been retired.
In fact, on a single day in March, hundreds of retired doctors and nurses joined New York City’s Medical Reserve Corps, a program of the City’s Department of Health, after the city’s Mayor (市长) Bill De Blasio asked for help. According to ABC News, at least 82, 000 people have thus enlisted in New York State’s medical reserve force, bringing together a wide range of health care workers to fight COVID-19.
“Whatever it is that they need. I’m willing to do,” said Jerry Kops, a retired New York nurse and musician in the world-famous Blue Man Group, whose tour got cancelled due to the outbreak. She explained, “I knew that all of my old co-workers were on the front line, so I felt I should sign up too.”
Jane Bedell, a retired primary care doctor from the Bronx, also signed up after De Blasio’s request for help. Although she celebrated retirement a little over a month ago, she felt it was her duty and privilege to get involved. “I’ve always wanted to make sure that I’m part of the solution and not part of the problem.” She told the New York Times.
Chuck Wright, a physician refused to let anything stop him from volunteering. After he retired a year and a half ago, he immediately started volunteering with medical organizations, and was among the responders who took care of California’s firefighters during the 2019 wildfires. He’s been deployed (调遣) twice to assist COVID-19 efforts, and was in charge of turning a Holiday Inn into a medical center.
But New York is not alone, other states, such as California, Massachusetts, Washington, and New Jersey have also put out similar calls for help.

22、 If students followed a typical academic plan over the course of the year, it is precisely the opposite of what science recommends for lasting learning—one topic was probably limited to one week and another to the next. It is what it sounds like—leaving time between practice sessions for the same material. You might call it deliberate not-practicing between periods of deliberate practice. Space between practice sessions creates the hardness that improves learning.
Iowa State researchers read people lists of words, and then asked for each list to be recited back either right away, after fifteen seconds of practicing, or after fifteen seconds of doing very simple math problems that prevented practicing. The subjects who were allowed to reproduce the lists right after hearing them did the best. Those who had fifteen seconds to practice before reciting came in second. The group distracted with math problems finished last. Later, when everyone thought they were finished, they were all surprised with a sudden quiz: write down every word you can recall from the lists. Suddenly the worst group became the best.
Short-term practicing gave purely short-term benefits. Struggling to hold on to information and then recall it had helped the group distracted by math problems transfer the information from short-term to long-term memory. The group with more and immediate practicing opportunity recalled nearly nothing on the sudden quiz. Repetition, it turned out, was less important than struggle.
It isn’t bad to get an answer right while studying. Progress just should not happen too quickly. For a given amount of material, learning is most efficient in the long run when it is really inefficient in the short run. If you are doing too well when you test yourself, the simple solution is to wait longer before practicing the same material again, so that the test will be more difficult when you do. Frustration is not a sign that you are not learning, but ease is.
【1】According to the science recommendation, to acquire lasting learning, we should ________.
A.follow a typical academic plan

23、 As cars have gotten fancier, tiny computers, called microprocessors — commonly known as chips(芯片) — have been added to control many different parts of a car. Modern cars may have as many as 150 microprocessors.
Last year, many car makers had to close their factories because of COVID-19. Since they weren’t making cars, they cancelled many of their orders with chip makers, which forced the companies that made microprocessors to stop making so many chips for cars. They began selling lots of chips to other kinds of companies. For example, during the lockdown, many people bought computers and video game systems to help pass the time while they were stuck at home. This meant that companies which made computers and video game systems needed a lot of chips for their products. So now the demand for new vehicles has returned, but there aren’t nearly enough microprocessors.
One company that studies the car business says that the chip shortage has already caused car makers to produce 500,000 fewer cars. The company expects that number to drop by 300,000 more cars this year. Ford stopped making cars at its Kentucky factory in December, and has slowed up work at a factory in Germany. General Motors has decided to make fewer cars at its factories in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. Honda and Nissan have stopped making cars at some of their factories. However, the problem has not affected the entire auto industry equally. Toyota says it diversified its supply chain and stored a huge number of components after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. And Hyundai didn’t cancel any of its chip orders in 2020 due to COVID-19, so it is almost not affected. But the hit to the industry has been reported at $61 billion.
Another reason for the shortage is that there just aren’t many companies that make chips. Most of the large chip-making companies are in China.
Most experts think the bottleneck is expected to last for months.
【1】Why does the author mention computers and video game systems in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain why car makers lack chips.
B.To show they can help people kill time.
C.To warn they’ll do harm to car making.
D.To prove how important chips are to cars.
【2】What can be inferred about Toyota?
A.It produced new types of cars.
B.It cancelled many chip orders.
C.It prepared for supply chain failures.
D.It united Hyundai for chip shortage.
【3】What is the author’s attitude to the present chip supply?
A.Anxious.
B.Objective.
C.Tolerant.
D.Conservative.
【4】What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Automakers Promote Chip Production
B.Chip Shortage Becomes Common
C.Chip Development Is on the Way
D.Chip Shortage Hurts Car Makers

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
British scientist Isaac Newton(1643-1727) once said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” And this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry may have best explained these words.
This year’s prize was divided among three scientists-Frenchman Jean Pierre Sauvage, British-born Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Dutch scientist Bernard L. Feringa. They were awarded the prize for creating the world’s smallest machines.
How small? Instead of being made of nails and bolts like regular machines, they are made of molecules. Instead of measuring in meters or centimeters, they measure in nanometers—one billionth of a meter-much thinner than a human hair.
But this was achieved neither overnight, nor alone.
Back in 1983, Sauvage, who is now a retired professor at the University of Strasbourg, France, started doing the research. He managed to join two ring-shaped molecules together to form a chain. The work is so hard and delicate that the Guardian describes it as like “building a Lego castle in the dark with boxing gloves”.
If what Sauvage had done was building the body of a car, what Stoddart managed to do 10 years later in 1991 was adding wheels to the car. Stoddart, who now works at Northwestern University, U.S., developed a structure known as “rotaxanes”, which meant that a ring of atoms could move around an axle.
And just like a car, the molecular machine needs a motor to run. So in 1999, Feringa, of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, became the first person to create an actual molecular motor. The molecular machine was powered by electricity.
But what is the use of a machine so small that we can’t even see it? According to scientists, the machines can benefit various fields like the creation of new materials and medical treatment methods.
“There are endless opportunities,” Feringa told Reuters. “Think of a tiny micro-robot that a doctor in the future will inject into your blood and it will go to search for a cancer cell or deliver a drug, for instance.
