21、 “Uncle Chuchu, look!” Uncle Chuchu turns to where Preet is pointing. She quickly eats up the chips on his plate. He always falls for this trick!
Chuchu is the pet name Preet has given him. Uncle Chuchu is the kindest person in Preet’s world. He is also her best friend. One day, Preet sees Uncle Chuchu scoop (抓起) handfuls of candies from a jar and drop them from his bedroom window. She watches in amazement as he ducks under the windowsill, trying hard not to laugh.
Cries of delight float up from the street!
At the end of the lane is a school. When the lunch bell rings, Uncle Chuchu secretly drops candies down to the school children as they pass under his window.
After lunch, Uncle Chuchu walks back to his office with his briefcase. When he passes the children playing, he doesn’t look at them. So, the children never guess that the hand that sends them candies every day belongs to this thin, solemn man!
But one day, Uncle Chuchu has a terrible pain in his stomach. As he’s taken to the hospital, he presses Preet’s hand one last time...
Now, Preet sits in Uncle Chuchu’s empty room. His yoga mat is on the floor. She remembers that long ago one day when she had walked in and found a pair of long legs poking into the air.
“Help!” Preet had yelled. “Uncle Chuchu is hurt!” Mom and Grandma had rushed into the room and burst out laughing! “He’s not hurt.” Mom said. “He’s doing yoga!” Grandma said. “Yoga,” repeated Preet. She had watched with wondering eyes as Uncle Chuchu lifted his body on the palms of his hands, like a bird about to fly away!
Preet’s eyes are wet. Nobody can fill the Uncle Chuchu-shaped hole in her heart.

22、Dogs need regular exercise to stay healthy and to stop them from getting bored. But the amount of time dogs need outdoors varies based on their age, size and breed.
Based on their age
While puppies are often bundles of energy, it is important not to over-exercise young dogs. A good rule of thumb for puppies is that they should enjoy five minutes of a movement twice a day per month of their age; so, for example, if your puppy is 12 weeks old, keep walks or play sessions to around 15 minutes each.
Elderly dogs may struggle to take long walks, but should still be given the opportunity to go outside and move around at their own pace at least twice daily.
Based on their size
All dogs should be let outside for exercise twice a day, but how intense that exercise should be depends, partly, on the size of the dog. Larger breeds need more space to wander around so, in addition to regular play in the house or garden.
Smaller dogs often require less space of a workout, so letting them out for a runaround, in addition to their daily walk, can be an appropriate form of exercise.
Based on their breed
Some breeds, such as border collies, springer spaniels, German shepherds and Siberian huskies, have been bred as “working dogs”, so are suited to covering long distances. Dogs such as labradors and poodles have bundles of energy, so they are also great companions for a long walk.
Brachycephalic breeds, such as pugs or bulldogs, are more likely to struggle with intense exercise. For these breeds, two shorter walks each day may be the best option; make sure to incorporate some rest breaks, and plenty of drinking opportunities, too.

23、 People often talk about cultural differences between western and eastern countries, but how about the western world itself? Surprisingly, a closer look at it can reveal a good many curious details.
The most obvious characteristic of the majority of Americans is that they smile a lot. It does not matter whether they have a strong reason to smile; they do it, sometimes simply because they have to. A smile is not just a powerful marketing tool but also a way to show that someone is friendly, and that life in general is fine. Europeans, on the contrary, prefer to keep a more neutral (不露声色的) facial expression. They smile mostly when they are in a good mood, or feel amused; if not, a European’s face will remain neutral, or even dull. In Russia, for example, there is a proverb saying that laughing for no reason is a sign of a fool. It does not mean that Europeans are serious, or that they do not have a sense of humor.
The same refers to communication in general. Americans are extremely communicative; small talk and chats are common. Europeans talk mostly when there is something to say, and rarely enter communication just for the purpose of talking to other people. American people prefer to express what they think carefully, considering how it might affect surrounding people. Europeans are more straightforward, even with unfamiliar people. A European friend will almost always voice their opinion on different occasions, and will not hesitate to remind you that you need to lose some weight or take a shower.
It can be said that Americans are people of contrasts. They are open-minded, flexible, and ready to accept everything new enthusiastically; but at the same time, American society manages to bring up unbelievable conservatives. Americans are extremely politically correct, which, in most cases, is indeed a secure and beneficial practice, but it can also mess up daily or even private communication, sometimes preventing having close relationships. Europeans, on the contrary, are more straightforward, preferring to tell the truth in direct ways. Each way of communication is different — neither is correct or incorrect.
【1】What does the author say about smiling?
A.It is culture-related within western countries.
B.It is a powerful marketing tool across cultures.
C.It is thought of as a sign of a fool in America.
D.It is regarded as being socially necessary in Europe.
【2】What is typical of Europeans’ communication?
A.Beating around the bush. B.Having small talk and chats.
C.Hiding their feelings carefully. D.Expressing themselves openly.
【3】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Being straightforward. B.Being politically correct.
C.Accepting everything new. D.Raising unbelievable conservatives.
【4】How is the text mainly developed?
A.By analyzing cause and effect. B.By making comparisons.
C.By classifying body language. D.By discussing research findings.
24、As the Internet is closely linked to almost every aspect of modern life, it’s difficult to avoid having some kind of presence online.
【1】 It is like the evidence you might leave behind after going camping, such as remains of a campfire, your dinner scraps(碎屑), and the path you carved in the woods while hiking.
【2】 This footprint tends to fall into two categories, depending on whether you’re leaving an active digital footprint or a passive one. An active digital footprint is data you leave on the Internet because you intended to do so, such as emails and text messages, comments you’ve left on articles or videos, and social media posts. 【3】 Unintentional data can be cookies and tracking data created by web browsing activity, geolocation data generated when using maps, your IP address and so on.
In some cases, there’s a legal use of your digital footprint. Some website owners and advertisers collect information about your online habits and purchasing preferences to better accommodate your need. But the data can also be used by hackers, criminals and other malicious actors. 【4】 Besides, criminals can gather enough information about a person to target them for fraud.
It’s inevitable to leave some sort of digital footprint in your wake online. To reduce the risk, avoid using your primary email address when creating online accounts. Don’t overshare your personal life. 【5】
A.In the case of your digital footprint, the evidence you leave behind is data.
B.You can create disposable(一次性的)email addresses to avoid the risk.
C.Perhaps the biggest risk people face online is having their identity stolen.
D.Likewise, your passive digital footprint is created by your unintentional data.
E.And not giving websites the right to sell your data may also minimize the risk.
F.Increasingly, websites are adding privacy tools to restrict the use of your personal information.
G.The degree to which you leave traces of your online activities is referred to as your digital footprint.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右.
Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
