21、Once upon a time, we were all question-asking experts. We started asking our parents numerous questions as kids. By preschool, our inquiries even reached the depths of science, philosophy, and the social order. Where does the sun go at night? Why doesn’t that man have a home like we do? Why do rocks sink but ice floats? 【1】
Why does the child’s urge to ask questions grow inactive in so many adults? An important factor is how the social environments surrounding us change as we age. Schools transform from a place for asking questions to one funded by our ability to answer them. 【2】 And we recognize that society rewards the people who propose to have the answers.
【3】 We can be braver about asking questions in public and encouraging others to pursue their curiosity, too. In that encouragement, we help create an environment where those around us feel safe to ask questions.
When it comes to how we phrase questions, we are advised to open with less sensitive questions, favor follow-up questions, and keep questions open-ended. We can also practice asking questions of and for ourselves by keeping a running list of questions in a journal. 【4】 Finally, we could set aside time to ask absurd questions like “How would you accomplish a week’s work in two hours?” This type of questions forces us to break the boundaries of our comfort zone.
In the world that does not look much as it did years ago, we must ask questions. 【5】 Great questions can open up our capacity to change because they allow us to draw people in, opening them up to sharing knowledge, ideas, and opinions. And they are also our primary means of learning about the world. In short, asking questions is the best way to deepen our understanding of the things that matter to our life. As any child could probably tell us if we asked.
A.Then, at some point, our inquiring desires disappear.
B.It is a high-payoff behavior especially in times of change.
C.The questions we ask depend on our attitudes as well as the situations.
D.But as we grow up, asking questions fills us with worry and self-doubt.
E.As such, one way to renew our inquiring spirit is to change the atmosphere.
F.We learn to sell ourselves on the job market by what we know, not what we don’t.
G.It not only removes the publicity from question asking, but offers us a place to experiment.
22、I started the latest round of the NutriFit programme weeks ago. We take about 45 minutes to go through participants’ health records, previous diets, expectations, and levels of willingness to change to customize the programme to meet each individual’s needs.
I was shocked by one thing. When it comes to weight-loss goals, I usually ask, When was the last time you were happy with your body? The reply usually relates to pre-wedding, pre-kids, pre-college—the usual suspects. However this time, almost everyone said, “Of course, I wasn’t happy with it then, but I’d be happy with it now!”
It made me stop to think. For most of us, no matter how much we don’t really like the body shape, there will likely be a point in the future when we would kill for the body we currently have. I don’t mean to upset anyone from improving their health right now. But maybe we need to stop and smell the roses. We should be happy and grateful for our bodies exactly as they are.
That’s why NutriFit has changed into something much more holistic. Now we have every shape and size taking part, but the goals are so much bigger: disease prevention, more energy and clarity, better immunity, well-balanced hormones... the list goes on. Yes, we get great body part results, but you are about so much more than what your body looks like.
In my opinion, the key rule of a successful nutrition programme is to be based on real food. If you focus more on balanced diets and less on weight, it becomes a mentally healthier process. If you’re going to maintain your new, healthy lifestyle, it needs to be something you actively enjoy—a lifestyle that you want to maintain. If you eat healthily because you want to rather than you have to, life gets 1,000 percent easier.
【1】What did the author do to customize the programme for individuals?
A.Analyze and adjust participants’ dietary structure.
B.Examine participants’ physical health condition.
C.Make clear of people’s health history and plans
D.Introduce the programme in detail.
【2】What made the author shocked?
A.People’s discontent with their previous life.
B.People’s optimism about their current body.
C.People’s satisfaction with their former body.
D.Peoples ambitious goals of losing weight.
【3】What does NutriFit pay attention to now?
A.People’s image.
B.People’s health
C.People’s weight
D.People’s appearance
【4】What should a successful nutrition programme focus on in the author’s view?
A.A healthy lifestyle.
B.A sound exercise plan
C.Enough nutritious food
D.Weight loss.
23、 Constructed in the third century BC, the Terracotta Army is a collection of clay sculptures presenting the forces of the First Emperor of China- Qin Shi Huang. The figures include more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses. Their varying clothes, facial features and body types have long impressed people. But historian Dan Snow says, “The amazing realism increases the great mystery surrounding these terracotta figures, where do they come from? They are nothing like any figure made in China before them, something changed. Something remarkable happened here 2,200 years ago."
Mr Snow explains historians have long believed Ancient China remained separated from the rest of the world. But the Terracotta Army could disprove that theory.
The time of the First Emperor was around 220BC. When, on the eastern edge of the Eurasian(欧亚的)landmass, was the Chinese worlds with competing mini-states over there. Over on the west of Eurasia, the Roman Empire started to expand over here and Greece was a great power,
"What's going on artistically in the East and West is very different in the third century BC. The classic Greek art is easy to recognize, with the absolute high watermark of artistic expression, beautiful—metre-and-a-half tall, human in its look. But in the Chinese world, you've got just 10cm tall, far more basic." says Mr Snow. He continues, "Then something changes, in fact, everything changes—there's a revolution. Suddenly, in 220BC you get the Terracotta Army lightyears ahead of what's gone before. It starts to look far less like before and far more like what's going on in the western world, both life-size, both lifelike, both attempts at realism."
This couldn't be more important, because it's always been assumed that China developed in isolation(隔离). But if that's not the case, if the First Emperor of China imported western ideas and techniques to create his extraordinary arts, that forces us to completely rewrite the history books.
【1】What confused Dan Snow about the Terracotta Army?
A.Why Qin Shi Huang ordered to create them.
B.Who instructed ancient people to create them.
C.Why their design was different from previous time.
D.What kind of clothes ancient people preferred to wear.
【2】What do most historians think of Ancient China?
A.It was closed to the outside world.
B.Many mini-states coexisted peacefully.
C.Building army of sculptures was very common then.
D.It built a good relationship with the rest of the world.
【3】What can we infer about the clay sculptures in Ancient China before 220BC?
A.They were in small size.
B.Their styles changed greatly.
C.Their facial expressions seemed real.
D.They looked similar to the Greek ones.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.The Development of Chinese Art
B.Westerners Found in Ancient China
C.The Discovery of China's Terracotta Army
D.Historians Reconsidering the Remote Past of China
24、 If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what's around. It's called Apple Day but in practice it's more like Apple Month. 【1】 But since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.
【2】 To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn't taste of anything special, it's still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat's Head, which is more of a curiosity than anything else.
There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. 【3】 But you'll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it's a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.
【4】 Therefore you can discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple themed fun and games.
Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园). 【5】 The National Fruit Collection at Brogdale is near Faversham in Kent.
A.The day itself is on October 21.
B.At the events, you can meet expert growers.
C.If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting one.
D.One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette.
E.You can plant fruit trees in an orchard after you have experience.
F.After visiting an expert, you can be introduced to an apple festival.
G.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples.
