21、Do you love to play soccer? If you do, then you’ve probably daydreamed from time to time about scoring the winning goal in a big game. Perhaps you’ve even pictured exactly how it would happen. A bicycle kick (倒钩射门) can help you.
There are probably very few soccer players who haven’t dreamed of scoring a goal on a bicycle kick. It’s a feat even more impressive than a hat trick. You can try to describe a perfect bicycle kick, but somehow words struggle to convey the magic found in this unique combination of grace, beauty, and athletic prowess (超凡技术). In soccer, few moves can compare to the bicycle kick. It doesn’t happen often. So it’s not often that you’re able to witness one.
Given how special bicycle kicks are, it should come as no surprise that there’s some argument about exactly who invented the bicycle kick. Some soccer historians claim Ramon Unzaga invented the bicycle kick in 1914 in Talcahuano, Chile. Others believe the bicycle kick may have been invented as early as 1892 in Callao, Peru, in a game against British sailors. Even legendary Brazilian striker Leonidas claims to have invented the move in 1932.
Regardless of who invented the bicycle kick, it has been-a special part of soccer for a century now. Only goalkeepers with very exceptional reflexes (反应) might be able to react quickly enough to block a shot from a bicycle kick. Why?Scientists claim it’s because of the physics involved in a bicycle kick. Since the player’s body is high above the ground and angled upward, the kicking leg has a greater distance than normal to travel before hitting the ball. The result: a forceful kick that sends the ball toward the goal more quickly than normal.
If you’re a soccer player, you’ve probably tried a bicycle kick a time or two. It’s not easy. But you’ll be able to see the basics broken down into steps by jumping online to check out how to do a bicycle kick.

22、On a holiday back home, my wife and I turned right, then right again, following the GPS navigation (导航) system, and found ourselves in a small Cretan town. I spoke to the GPS: “We don’t want to be here; we want the highway.” It instructed me to turn right once more. With every turn, the street narrowed. It was like being in a magical shrinking room. We drew the side mirrors back. We took another turn. The new road was even narrower, the walls so close you feel hard to hold your breath.
Another car appeared, coming towards us from the opposite direction. The driver gestured, telling me I’ll have to make way. But how? I didn’t have the nerve to back up along the impossibly narrow road. Locals appeared. Soon there was a whole group, using sign language to suggest a solution. There was a narrow garage opening to one side. If I could squeeze the car forward into the garage, I could then, through a series of tiny adjustments, back into the side street, allowing the other car to pass.
More locals arrived, standing on various sides of the vehicle, helpfully indicating that I have a centimetre to spare here, a millimetre there. There were brick walls on all 17 sides of the car. There was zero chance that I won’t damage the vehicle. This was significant since, a day earlier, at the Europcar counter, I had refused the additional insurance.
One lady stood at the rear of the vehicle, waving me on. She was making strong “this way, this way” movements with her arms. In an act of blind trust, I followed her instructions, creeping backwards and forwards. Remarkably it worked. I completed my 27-point turn into the side street, with no damage to the vehicle. The other car passed. The driver gave me a grateful wave. The locals applauded happily “Hero! Hero!” I followed her lead, down the narrow lane and—finally—back onto the highway. Free of the town, I clearly knew that I encountered heroes.

B.Because he rented it.

A.He was questioned by the locals.

23、Don’t call Madison Stewart an environmentalist. She sees herself simply as an individual taking action in defense of something she loves that’s in need of protection.
Despite her youth, the 24-year-old is an undersea veteran (老手). She grew up sailing around the Great Barrier Reef on her parents’ boat and spent her early life free diving while patiently waiting for the day when she could get her scuba diving (水肺潜水) certification, aged 12. Already impressed by sharks, Madison was now pleased to be able to observe them in their own world. “I got to know the sharks...I could recognize them by sight,” Madison says. “Other people had dogs around them growing up. I had sharks.”
But within a couple of years, she saw a great reduction in shark numbers on the reef. “One day I went in the water and couldn’t find my sharks anywhere, sharks I’d spent my childhood with,” she says. “They’d been caught and killed.” It was a great moment for Madison.
She left school at 14 to be homeschooled so she could spend more time in the ocean. She taught herself to shoot underwater video to document sharks in their own world and share her sense of wonder with others. She launched a YouTube channel and built a huge following for her documentaries where she focuses on issues like inadequate protection for some shark species and the global shark fin (鳍) industry.
In 2014 Madison was the subject of the encouraging documentary Shark Girl, which introduced her to a global audience. In 2017 she appeared as an “Ocean Guardian” in the documentary Blue that explored a lot of threats to the world’s marine environments, including the damaging effect of the global shark fishery. The film encourages viewers to get involved and includes practical steps to guide them to do so. It shows Madison’s philosophy that the power of the individual to make a difference by their own direct action should never be underestimated.
