21、If you ever find yourself yawning during a long Zoom video call, you may soon see yawns (打哈欠) spread to the other faces on your screen. Your pet under the desk may even join in.
Yawns can spread even between dogs and humans, as reported in 2008 and 2012. At the time, empathy — the ability to put yourself in another’s shoes — was one of most probable explanations. But new evidence suggests this reasoning is wrong.
To get a better understanding, researchers examined whether dogs’ yawning follows the same behavioral patterns with humans. For instance, people are both more likely to yawn with friends and families than with strangers. Besides, women, on average, report greater feelings of empathy (共情) than men, and catch yawns more frequently. But earlier this year, when researchers analyzed previous studies of yawning in dogs, they found no sign of these biases (偏向).
How often do dogs catch yawns from humans who are nice or not so nice to them? In another study, an experimenter would either play with or pet the dog, or plainly ignore the dog and avoid all eye contact. The anti-social experimenter would also show the dog a treat and command it to perform a trick, and then eat the treat themselves. But this did not affect the dogs’ yawning.
It’s still unclear why we yawn in the first place. One hypothesis is that yawning is a stress response that increases alertness by increasing blood flow to the brain and cooling it. “ Having yawns spread could help coordinate (协调) a group’s alertness. However, this is one nice evolutionary story that we don’t have that much evidence for. This isn’t to say your dog doesn’t have empathy at all. Instead, the study shows that animal minds are still a mystery. ” says Alex Taylor, an evolutionary psychologist.

22、American Jake Pinnick comes from a small town called Kewanee.
Pinnick said when he told friends and family he wanted to go to the Wudang Kungfu Academy in China, the response was typical. "It's not a usual thing to say, but it is pretty normal for kids to want to get out of a place like Kewanee. Most kids say something like they want to move to Hollywood and become an actor, " said the 30-year-old. “When I first thought about it, it was daydreaming for myself, too.”
Once he found himself at the academy, Pinnick said fitting in was softened by other foreigners who were in the area and a part of the school. Getting used to the way of life was surprisingly easy given the peaceful nature to it. Pinnick said after a while, he found himself more at home in Wudang than he ever felt back home in Kewanee. Locals were more than welcoming and willing to engage.
“The culture shock wasn't that bad. Surprisingly, I find I have more of that going back to America now... learning the language did take some time, but everyone around the school was familiar with foreigners, so we had a lot of fun speaking broken English and Chinese back and forth at the start.”
After he settled into a routine, Pinnick set about engaging himself in Chinese culture, including Kungfu training. He was also attracted by the philosophical tradition most well-known for the idea of living in harmony with the universe.
Pinnick said he had to go home after the first six months and immediately wanted to return to China, feeling as if it had now become his home more than America, and he had begun a process of rewriting himself as a person overseas.
His life now goes around training, teaching and studying. He graduated from the academy in 2014 and still helps teach there.
Pinnick said the goal is to one day return to America and teach what he has learned. Looking back on his amazing journey, Pinnick said he has grown by leaps and bounds from a small-town American kid who had a daydream he could not shake.
【1】What did Pinnick's family think of his idea of learning Kungfu?
A.Unrealistic.
B.Creative.
C.Challenging.

D.A good reputation.
23、 Patagonia, a leading brand in outdoor clothing, is climbing a mountain in the clothing industry and reaching a new summit. Through several measures, the company inspires people to share, resell, repair, and recycle their clothes, producing less waste. Every second, about one garbage truck of used clothes is sent to the landfill (填埋区) or is burned. Patagonia is taking this alarming statistic seriously.
A few years ago, the fashion giant launched an independent online store called Worn Wear, which is a collection of refurbished (翻新的) clothing where customers resell their old clothes for cash or store credit and shop for second-hand goods. Now Patagonia is approaching a step further ― they are including a “buy used” option on their website, offering second-hand clothes alongside their newest designs.
The second-hand trend is here to stay. Other chains such as The North Face, Macy’s, Adidas, Burberry, and Made well have also accepted the new circular economy business model. Famous traditional retailers (零售商) are also becoming used clothing providers, and are transforming the way second-hand clothes are sold and sensed.
Even the most skeptical shoppers are now open to the idea of buying used quality items. As a result, it is no surprise that the total secondhand market is projected to grow to almost twice the size of fast fashion by 2029. Naturally, the most sustainable piece of clothing is the one that already exists. This “green” article of clothing doesn’t require using virgin (原始的) resources, it prevents used clothes from ending up in landfills, and it requires no plastic packaging.
According to a 2018 report by thredUP, buying a piece of used clothing extends its life on average by 2.2 years, which reduces its carbon, waste, and water footprint by 73 percent. So even though the development of innovative materials and processes in fashion seems promising, wearing second-hand clothes is the easiest and most immediate way to face the environmental challenges the fashion industry brings.
【1】What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A.The second-hand trend is more commonly accepted.
B.Lots of second-hand clothes are of high quality.
C.Traditional retailers have a role to play in reducing waste.
D.Consumer attitudes towards second-hand clothes are changing.
【2】What’s the author’s attitude to the future of secondhand market?
A.Skeptical.
B.Optimistic.
C.Urgent.
D.Unclear.
【3】What is the biggest advantage of buying used clothing?
A.Keeping pace with fashion.
B.Satisfying consumers’ needs.
C.Lowering economic stress.
D.Protecting the environment.
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.Patagonia Is a Leading Clothing Brand
B.Clothing Waste Influences the Environment
C.Second-hand Clothes Draw Wide Attention
D.Patagonia Is Now Selling Used Clothes
24、 An Edinburgh inventor has created a fully biodegradable bottle that is made from paper and a secret combination of plant materials, and it could help save the planet's oceans from plastic pollution and can also be eaten by sea creatures.
The Edinburgh-based Durham University chemistry graduate James Longcroft started a non-profit bottled water company two years ago. He wanted to put all his profits into a charity that provided clean drinking water to countries in Africa.
However, after concerns about the environmental impact of plastic bottles, Mr. Longcroft decided the Edinburgh and London-based company, Choose Water, should go plastic-free. So he came up with a new type of water bottle—a waterproof paper bottle.
“The outside is made from recycled paper, but the inside has to be waterproof, and provides strength so the bottle would keep its structure, and keep the water fresh,” Mr. Longcroft said.
When the bottle is thrown in the ocean the degrading process begins within hours leaving the bottle totally degraded (分解)within weeks. The steel cap breaks down within a year.
Mr. Longcroft now believes these novel bottles could revolutionise the industry and says the cost of producing the bottle is around 5 pence more than one made from single-use plastic.
“The main difficulty we face is breaking into a saturated (饱和的)market and competing with an old industry,” he said. “Changing an industry will be a big uphill battle, but with the support from the public, we will change the way we look at bottled water.”
Researchers warn that eight million tonnes of plastics currently find their way into the ocean every year which will stay in the environment for centuries.
“We really want to get our bottles on shelves and into people's hands as soon as possible—if we can stop even one plastic bottle ending up in the environment it will be worth it,” said Mr Longcroft.
【1】What is special about the bottle?
A.It can be recycled.
B.It is plastic-free.
C.It purifies sea water.
D.It can be used for food.
【2】What does James Longcroft expect from the new bottles?
A.To raise money for charity.
B.To keep the water fresh
C.To reduce ocean pollution.
D.To prompt the sale of bottled water.
【3】What's the main challenge about the new bottles?
A.They face stiff competition to enter market.
B.They are more costly than plastic ones.
C.They still lack in the public support.
D.They take a long time to break down.
【4】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Cutting down on plastic pollution.
B.Providing clean water to the public.
C.Stopping the use of the plastic bottles.
D.Getting people to accept the new bottles.
25、 Many things happen when people are ageing. Apart from the greying hair and wrinkled skin, there is a(n) _______ change which comes with older age. When humans reach their later years, they favour more long-term _______ and their social cirele is reduced.
Now, for what appears to be the first time, scientists have seen the same _______ in another species. Twenty years of observations of chimpanzees (猩猩) reveal that older males choose to keep contact with their _______ friends at the expense of other relationships.
The researchers studied 78,000 hours of observations made between 1996 and 2016 that followed the social _______ of 21 male chimpanzees between the ages of 15 and 58 years old. They classified the chimps' _______ depending on the amount of time they sat with others and groomed (梳毛) them. They then rated (分类) the various pairings as mutual (相互的) friendships, where both chimps seemed to enjoy the relationship; _______ friendships, where one chimp was more keen to be friends than the other; and non-friendships, where neither chimp showed _______ the other.
When the scientists looked at the _______ of friendships, they found that the older chimps had more mutual friendships and fewer one-sided friendships than younger chimps. Another __________ seen in older humans was also spotted in the chimps. As the males got older, their levels of __________ gradually become less, meaning they started fewer fights and tended to threaten others in their group less often.
The observations have left the researchers __________. According to an idea in psychology known as socio-emotional selectivity theory, older humans prefer more __________ relationships because they are aware that time is running out. However many animal experts argue that chimpanzees __________ the human sense of mortality (死亡) , suggesting something else is driving the behaviour.
Robin Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Oxford, said in humans, the __________ social circles with age is due to declining social motivation to get out and meet people combined by lack of opportunity. In chimpanzees, as older males compete less for mates, they may focus on close, reciprocal (互惠的) relationships with trusted partners, he said.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sigrid finished milking the cow and stepped out of the barn into the cold air. It was almost summer, but icebergs still filled the narrow sea. She set the bucket down, only to find that the milk reached merely halfway to the top. If we don't get more food soon, she thought anxiously, we will have to eat the cow. And then what will we do?
Grandfather used to tell her that when their Norse ancestors first came to Greenland, the fields were rich with grass. But in recent years, the climate has been getting colder and the summers shorter. When her grandfather was a little boy, there were as many as fifteen cows in the family's barn. Now there is just one. And the family has barely enough hay to feed it.
A gust of wind sending a chill down her spine, Sigrid stuffed her hands into the pockets to warm them. Her fingers felt her most prized possession, a piece of red cloth she'd had since she was a small girl. She took the cloth out of her pocket and let it unfold. It was barely longer than her arm. But its brilliant colour was bright against the stark(荒凉的) landscape. The cloth had once been part of a dress—in happier, more prosperous times. Nobody dresses like that anymore.
With ice-filled seas, ships no longer arrive with foods and goods to trade. All of a sudden, movement on the water caught Sigrid's eye. A light boat moved silently between the icebergs. An Inuk boy, about Sigrid's age, was looking her way, staring at the red cloth fluttering(飘动) in the breeze. A hunting weapon was tied to the front of his boat. And dragging behind it was a large fish. Sigrid knew there had been fights between the Inuit and the Norse. But the boy had a kind face and did not reach for his weapon.
