二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、With fashion magazines, advertisements and teenage icons sporting the “latest and greatest” trend, there’s a lot of pressure on teenagers to fit the mold. For decades, teenage and adolescents have used fashion as a social weapon. Bullies will pick out peers that aren’t wearing the best brands of clothing and criticize them.

Dr. Jensen, a professor at Western Illinois University, says there are some tell-tale signs that your child might be a victim of fashion bullying. They’ll become picky about what clothes they wear and will be very demanding when you take them shopping.

Dr. Mary Bousted, the general secretary of The Association of Teachers and Lecturers said, “Bully of this kind can be insidious (阴险的), and it can just be a look that a child is given. Advertising and marketing have made our society increasingly image-conscious and our children are suffering the consequences. Schools should be places where all children feel equal, but it is virtually impossible for schools to protect their pupils from the tough aspects of these commercial influences.” Andy Cranham, a teacher at City of Bristol College said, “The need to belong in groups is paramount to young learners and exclusion is something they see as the end of the world.”

What Not to Wear, a popular television show, features fashion bullying as entertainment. Each week Stacy and Clinton make fun of a fashion victim, criticizing her appearance, and both verbally and literally laughing at her wardrobe.

I think beauty is probably at the base of fashion, and the problem comes when so called “stylish” people start defining beauty in a way that excludes other people. Why wait for a trend in order to wear something in its wake? If you’re able to wear something with confidence, YOU will be the one starting a trend.

【1】In which way is fashion used as a social weapon according to Para. 1?

A.The best brands of clothing gains popularity.

B.Teenagers suffer a lot to fit the fashion mold.

C.Peers not wearing the best brand will be attacked.

D.Teens protect themselves by wearing the best trend.

【2】Which of the following may Dr Mary Bousted agree?

A.All students are equally treated at schools.

B.It’s alright for the society to be image-conscious.

C.Children are well protected from commercial influences.

D.Advertising and marketing are to blame for fashion anxiety.

【3】What does “paramount” in para. 3 mean?

    A.Compulsory.

    B.Important.

    C.Luxurious.

    D.Fashionable.

【4】What’s the author’s idea about fashion and beauty?

    A.Confidence is beauty.

    B.Fashion is entertainment.

    C.Beauty is based on fashion.

    D.Beauty is excluding some people.

  • 22、Work Your Mind

Here’s something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: struggling with schoolwork on your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you struggle while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.

This theory might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning. “Don't be too quick to get help when learning something new,” education expert Manu Kapur told TFK. “Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.”

Kapur came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher’s help. In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher.

With the teacher’s help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas. The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process, not just the solution.

Kapur’s advice for kids is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than going to your teacher for help. “Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won’t work,” says Kapur. “The struggle needs to be a genuine attempt to figure out or solve a problem in as many ways as possible.”

1When you have doubt on schoolwork, you’d better ____________.

    A.ask your teacher for help

    B.make it clear by yourself

C.ask your classmates to help you

    D.ask your parents for help

2What’s Manu Kapur educational idea on learning new knowledge?

A.Give students much help as soon as possible.

B.Let students learn it on themselves in one way.

C.Let students learn it by themselves in the same way.

D.Let students learn it for themselves in different ways.

3How did Kapur check his idea on better learning?

    A.By asking questions.

    B.By solving art problems.

    C.By group comparations.

    D.By solving science problems.

4What is the most important in learning knowledge?

    A.Getting the teacher’s help.

    B.Getting the student’s help.

    C.Grasping the learning course.

    D.Receiving the final solution.

  • 24、   My doctor took me for a walk around the farm where she lives. I was physically and emotionally exhausted and discouraged by anxiety and depression. The place was full of life. There were insects, horses, rabbits and a cat. She told me to focus on my body in the environment. When I was ill I tended to retreat into my mind and disconnect from here and now. So, when I met a horse named Fira, I expected nothing.

As I got closer to Fira, she nuzzled(用鼻子安抚) her nose into my chest, putting a gentle pressure over my heart. Something happened inside me: I felt as if I had reached a wellspring of past hurts, fears and failings. I began to melt emotionally.I patted Fira’s nose and breathed in her smell. I found I didn’t have to concentrate on feeling better; Fira helped me feel loved and safe. I worked with Fira often, learning basic communication and leading methods to work together with her. Initially, I wasn’t sure exactly what one would do with a horse excepting riding it. But I knew that Fira had touched me in an uncommon way and had made me feel better. She connected with me by responding to my emotional state and reflecting it back to me in an open, affectionate way.

In my meetings with Fira, I found that I lost my usual self-consciousness, and I would focus entirely on communicating.I learned to live in the present, to focus on what was happening this day, in this moment, in this place. I learned to forget the past, with all its hurts. I learned to forget the future, which hasn’t happened yet. When you stand beside a horse, you exist completely in the moment.

With Fira by my side, I saw into a life in which trust comes first, and compassion follows. I found a deep peace in leading her along a path, by using my own power of intention to indicate whether to start, stop, turn left or turn right. I felt an inner quiet and even joy. My work with this horse was part of a journey out of a very dark night in my soul.
