21、The SAT, a college admissions exam long associated with paper and pencil, will soon go all digital.

Starting in 2024 in the US, the new digital SAT will shrink (缩减) from three hours to two, include shorter reading passages and allow students to use a calculator on the math section. Testing will sill take place at a test center or at a school, but students will be able in choose between using, their own devices—including a tablet or a laptop—or the school’s devices.

“The digital SAT will be more relevant,” said Priscilla Rodriguez of the: College Board, the organization behind the test. “With input from educators and students, we are adapting to ensure we continue to meet their evolving needs.”

The College Board previously cancelled plans to offer an at-home digital test because of concern about students’ being able to access three hours of uninterrupted Internet and power. Student broadband (宽带) access has been a constant struggle throughout the pandemic, especially in rural and low-income areas. The new SAT will be designed to autosave, so students won’t lose work or time while they reconnect.

All this comes as the relevance of the SAT and ACT, another college: entrance exam, is being called into question in the college admissions process. More than 1,800 US colleges are not requiring a test score for students applying to enroll in fall 2022. At least 1,400 of those schools have extended their test policies through at least the fall of 2023.

Still, the SAT and ACT are deeply rooted in the American high school experience. More than a dozen states require one of the exams to graduate. And despite many colleges making the test optional, some students see value in it.

“The test definitely doesn’t offer the full profile (描述) of who a student is,” explains Kirsten Amematsro, a junior at Potomac High School in Dumfries, Va. “But having good SAT will be ‘a cherry on top’ of your application. It just kind of speaks to what you can accomplish in your testing ability.”

Smartphones are equipped with accelerometers(加速器). MyShake uses phone accelerometers to measure seismic (地震的) activity. It has been programmed to know the difference between normal activity and earthquake movement. The software developers say their app is right 93 percent of the time. A smartphone sends seismic information to the app developers. If the developers receive several warnings from one area, it recognizes that an earthquake may be taking place or will take place soon. Using information sent from the app, the network then judges the location and strength of the quake in real time. MyShake can record 5.0 earthquake at distances of 10 kilometers or less.

MyShake uses very little power, according to its developers. Only when seismic activity is sensed by the app does it become active and sends data to the network. The app works best when your phone is resting on a flat surface, like a table.

The developers hope that MyShake can add to information collected by the U.S Geological Survey. That U.S agency has created the Earthquake Early Warning System, also known as the EEW. The EEW has used sensors for measuring quakes in many areas. In places where no such equipment exists, MyShake may be the only method of early quake detection (发现). The app also shows ways to stay safer during an earthquake. The developers say it will become more effective as more people use it.

The innovation was developed using wood from the balsa tree, which is native to South and Central America, and claims to be five times more thermally efficient than glass.

The team treated balsa wood in an oxidizing bath that bleaches it of nearly all visibility and then penetrated it with polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), creating a product that is virtually transparent.

Unlike traditional glass, the transparent wood can withstand much stronger impacts and will bend when damaged, instead of breaking into a lot of small pieces.

The transparent wood was created by teams at the University of Maryland and University of Colorado, which set out to find a greener alternative to conventional glass-a product that creates 25,000 tons in carbon emissions each year. Along with contributing to greenhouse gases, glass contributes to a loss of energy.

“Residential building windows in particular account for 10%～25%of the heat loss due to their poor thermal management capability,” the team wrote in the study. “Exploring energy efficient window materials is thus highly desirable to address heating costs, energy shortages, and the global impact of climate change associated with increased carbon emissions.”

The team notes that the bonding between PVA and cellulose in the wood, creates a tightly packed structure that allows for more thermal protection and makes it more durable and lighter than glass.

“Switching to transparent wood could prove to be efficient as well, ” researchers shared in a statement. “It is approximately five times more thermally efficient than glass, cutting energy costs. It is made from a sustainable, renewable resource with low carbon emissions. It also agrees with existing industrial processing equipment, making future mass production easier.”
