二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The jaguars(美洲豹) didn't bother me much during the day. Adonis, our local guide who was leading us deep into the Guatemalan jungle, guaranteed that we wouldn't come under attack from the jaguars. The most recent time he had seen one was more than a year ago. Last week, he had spotted some jaguar tracks, which was probably about as close to the animals as we would get, he said.

But his guarantee meant little that night as I cowered in my hammock(吊床) under the Central American stars. Now my mind turned every soft sound of waving leaves into a moving big cat full of murderous intent(probably to get back at the rude human who had interrupted its life.)And, if it wasn't a jaguar ready to attack, it was a poisonous snake, picking which of my bottoms to sink its long sharp tooth into.

Tiredness calmed my overactive imagination and I slept slightly. Next day, big surprise: no death by either snake bite or jaguar attack and injury. We packed up our stuff and continued toward our destination Mirador, the site of the tallest temple in the Mayan world.

Although we may have questioned why we had left a perfectly nice beach to come here, that night no doubts remained. Just before sunset we took our places at the top of the temple hill. A Mayan astrologer(占星家)had probably sat in the  same place 2,000 years before and improved his knowledge of the Milky Way.

Tonight, as with every night, spectacular pink shades marked the western skyline. The sky darkened and, one by one, the stars shone with a soft light into life.

1What did the guide think of the jaguars?

A.They were difficult to find. B.They were aggressive killers.

C.They were tough to deal with. D.They had close relations with man.

2What does the underlined word “cowered” in Paragraph 2 most nearly mean?

    A.Shrank. B.Skipped.

    C.Relaxed. D.Danced.

3What message is the author trying to convey in the last paragraph?

A.We should show respect to nature.

B.Traveling in the jungle can be dangerous.

C.The ecology problem requires urgent attention.

D.The universe is lasting while human life is short.

  • 22、If you’ve ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “man’s best friend”. But a dog has a much shorter life span — about 12 to 15 years long — than humans, which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away.

Why not make a clone of that dog then? This is the solution offered by a South Korean company, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation. The company has successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for US customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. Now, Sooam Biotech is planning to introduce their business to UK dog owners, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones.

Meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg. Researchers then replace the DNA in the egg with that from the skin cell and implant the egg into the womb (子宫) of a female dog. The egg grows into a puppy over the following two months. To clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died.

The whole process takes less than a day, but it comes at a shockingly high price — around £63,000 (614,000 yuan). But if you can’t afford it now, you can also save the cells in a laboratory and access them at a later date. Just like identical twins of humans, they share the exact same DNA but there will still be small differences between them. “The spots on a Dalmatian clone will be different, for example,” Insung Hwang, head of Sooam Biotech, told The Guardian. However, as magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect replica of the original one.

Dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not “clone-able”. Apart from genes, personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which are both “random elements [that] cloning technologies simply cannot overcome”, Professor Tom Kirkwood at Newcastle University, UK, told The Telegraph.

Perhaps bringing our dogs back with cloning is not the best way to remember them after all.

Kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed out: “An important aspect of our relationship with them is coming to terms with the pain of letting go.”

【1】According to the article, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation is ______.

A.working on plans to help dog owners enjoy their pets longer

B.Dog cloning is very expensive and usually takes several months to complete.

C.Dog cloning is very popular among US and UK pet owners.

D.Cloned dogs might develop different habits and characteristics even though they look very similar.

【3】Which of the following shows the correct order of the dog cloning process?

    a. an egg is taken from another dog

    b. a skin cell is taken from the pet dog and saved in a laboratory

    c. the egg is placed in the womb of a female dog

    d. the DNA of the egg is replaced by the DNA from the skin cell

  • 23、   Most of us struggle through the time it takes to get a cup of coffee to our lips once our alarms go off. Luckily, this coffee-brewing alarm clock could make those few struggling minutes practically disappear.

An alarm clock that brews a fresh pot of coffee as soon as you wake up actually exists, and you can buy it right now. Thanks to the Barisieur, your morning time will never be the same.

Here’s how it works: Before you go to bed, fill the glass container with water and pour ground coffee into the filter (过滤器). Not a black coffee drinker?

Not to worry --- special drawers keep your cream cold and store your sugar, too.

Then, just set your alarm and go to sleep. This machine will take care of the rest.

A few minutes before your alarm goes off next morning, the Barisieur will begin to brew your coffee. And voila! A hot cup of coffee is waiting for you when your alarm rings and you open your eyes. You won’t even have to leave your bed.

London designer Joshua Renouf designed this invention himself, raising over $500,000 through donations on IndieGoGo. Coffee lovers should act fast and put in a pre-order on the website now, paying just $300. Otherwise, you have to wait until it hits stores and pay $420.

Owning one of these clocks will be totally worth it. Nothing says “seize the day” quite like waking up to a pot of freshly brewed coffee, after all. Also, the machine isn’t limited to making coffee only in the morning. You can go out and return home with a hot cup of coffee waiting for you.

1Why does the author mention the struggle?

    A. To show making coffee is challenging.

    B. To show coffee can make us feel better.

    C. To show the coffee-brewing alarm clock is great.

    D. To show it is difficult to get up early in the morning.

2What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A. The Barisieur. B. The morning time.

    C. A hot cup of coffee. D. The glass container.

3What’s the benefit of pre-ordering the clock on the website now?

    A. You can get one much earlier.

    B. You can get one at a great discount.

    C. You can get donations from its designer.

    D. You may have a chance to meet Joshua Renouf.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A. To tell us how to make coffee easily.

    B. To advertise a new product in a store.

    C. To recommend a special kind of alarm clock.

    D. To compare traditional alarm clocks and new ones.

  • 24、   Children at a hospital in Vienna recently enjoyed a wonderful surprise right outside their windows. Famous superheroes scaled (攀登) the building, arriving at the children’s windows to deliver warm hellos and smiles along with some impressive superhero muscle flexing.

It was a gift of love delivered from caped heroes on the outside to those young and isolated “heroes” who are inside hospital rooms. This special event happened at the St. Anna hospital on Monday, February 15 to coincide with International Childhood Cancer Day, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Members of WEGA, Austria’s special police force, dressed up as five much loved superheroes for the occasion, putting their strength, athleticism, and kindness into this most giving act. Superman, Batman, Thor, Iron Man, and Spider-Man joined forces outside the hospital for a most special team mission. They rappelled (绕绳下降) down from the roof in true superhero style, and stopped at each child’s window, surprising each patient, bringing laughter, and a thrill.

Many of the children behind those windows are seriously ill and have little interaction with the outside world, especially during times of lockdown. Receiving a special visit from a superhero can encourage a child’s imagination and offer incredible excitement and delight. It adds a depth of fun and playfulness to their world and can help them to dream big.

Below the hospital windows, a brass band played the classic superhero tunes, while other patients and nurses gathered outside to witness the scene. After the superheroes touched ground, there was time for some photos outside with the dynamic superheroes.

On this very important mission to fight loneliness, these caped superheroes offered incredible emotional support. Along with tears of joy, the event received much attention around the world, building more awareness of cancer care for children and teens.

As Spider-Man author Stan Lee wrote, “With great power comes great responsibility.” This famous Peter Parker principle was made on a cold winter day in Vienna, warming hearts around the world.

【1】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.The reaction of the children.

    B.Some details of the mission.

    C.Some types of superheroes.

D.The police forces attending the mission.

【2】Which of the following can best describe the mission?

    A.Puzzling.

    B.Frightening.

    C.Complex.

    D.Meaningful.

【3】What did the mission result in?

A.Positive social influence on cancer care.

    B.More awareness of heroes’ responsibility.

C.Better medical treatment for the children.

    D.More demand for superheroes’ visits.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Superheroes Offer Joy and Hope to Kids in Hospital

B.Members of Police Force Dressed Up as Superheroes

C.Policemen Dressed Up as Superheroes to Deliver Gifts

D.Sick Children Need More Interaction with the World
