21、 When I was a child, I dreamed of becoming many things. Sometimes, I wished I was an astronaut going up into space, finding new planets and jumping around in a cool space suit. Other times, I imagined being a cowboy in the Wild West, wearing stylish cowboy boots. On other occasions, I pretended to be a famous footballer, using my skills to score lots of goals for my team.
Looking back, I realize that imagination is a wonderful thing. I was able to create entire environments and scenarios in my head, using nothing more than my brain, and to be able to adapt things in my everyday surroundings to fit the specific story of the day. Growing up with siblings (兄弟姐妹) also helped, as it meant that even bigger stories could be created, combining our ideas and putting our thoughts into action. It also allowed for more varieties in the stories, as sometimes I could be the hero while on other occasions, I would be the bad guy.
One of my all-time favorite memories as a kid was playing in my back garden. I played the role of Indiana Jones, which cleaned up at the cinema at that time, with my younger sister as my assistant and my brother as a bad person. We used everything in our garden, from the path to the fence, as part of the storyline to create obstacles that needed to be overcome, and we would keep the story going for hours!
My personal favorite game was Indiana Jones and the Stolen Easter Eggs, where my brother hid small chocolate eggs around the garden and my sister and I had to find them by answering questions or solving a puzzle. It was difficult, but eventually we found all the eggs and shared them together.
Since then, I have seen many great things and met many amazing people. The elements of fun and varieties of my creative imaginations are what I try to bring into every part of my positive life. So I can enjoy sharing with and hearing about other people’s stories, too.

22、The people who happen to be in a city center at any given moment may seem like a random collection of individuals. But new research featuring a simple mathematical law shows that urban travel patterns worldwide are, in fact, predictable despite location.
Researchers discovered what is known as an inverse square relation (平方反比关系) between the number of people in a given urban location and the distance they traveled to get there, as well as how frequently they made the trip. It may seem intuitive (直觉的) that people visit nearby locations frequently and distant ones less so, but the newly discovered relation accurately predicts, for instance, that the number of people coming from two kilometers away five times per week will be the same as the number coming from five kilometers twice a week.
The researchers analyzed data from about eight million people between 2006 and 2013 in six urban locations. This study focused on locations and examined how many people were visiting, from how far and how frequently. The researchers found that all the unique choices people make—from dropping kids at school to shopping-obey this inverse square law.
One explanation for this strong statistical patter is that traveling requires time and energy, and people have limited resources for it. At the core is the effort that people are willing to invest collectively to travel to certain locations, trying to optimize their days.
Understanding these patterns is important not only for planning the placement of new shopping centers or public transportation but also for modeling disease transmission within cities, says Kathleen Stewart, a geographer and mobility researcher.
Many researchers estimate travel with “gravity models”, which assume that movement between cities is proportional (成比例的) to their population sizes. But these models do not account for travel patters within cites—information that is particularly critical in dealing with disease transmission Epidemiologist (流行病学家) Sam Scarpino says models based on this new finding might better track that flow.
“Those organizational patterns have really profound (深远的) implications on how COVID will spread,” Scarpino says. In a smaller rural location, where many people regularly go to the same grocery store, the entire town will experience sharp peaks of infections as the virus sweeps through the community. But in a bigger city, the spread takes longer he explains, because mini epidemics can occur in each neighborhood somewhat separately.
【1】What does the underlined word “optimize” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Slow down.
B.Keep a record of.
C.Think back on.
D.Make the most of.
【2】Why does the author mention “gravity models” in Paragraph 6?
A.To introduce the travel patterns within cities.
B.To stress the importance of tracking diseases.
C.To compare the urban and rural infection rates.
D.To show the advantage of the inverse square law.
【3】Which of the following can be supported by the newly discovered law?
A.Diseases spread faster in rural areas than big cities.
B.Trip distance seldom influences people’s travel choices.
C.Epidemics are harder to discover in big cities than in rural areas,
D.City residents are likely to make frequent trips to a distant place.
23、According to EMTP and Stat Gear CEO Avi Goldstein, every driver should be taught how to get out of a car when it becomes submerged in water.
“Accidents and natural disasters often occur so quickly that it’s essential for drivers to be prepared,” says Goldstein. “In this case, preparation is simply knowing what should be done before it happens.”
Goldstein offers the following lifesaving tips:
1.Try to stay calm. The worst thing you can do is become overly agitated and panicked.
2. Don’t try to open the door. This will cause the car fill with water very quickly.
3. Unfasten your seat belt or cut it if it’s jammed.
4. Help free anyone else in the car.
5. Use a window punch — preferably spring-loaded. It’s nearly impossible to break a car window with your hands or feet.
6. Exit through the broken window and swim up to safety.
“Every car should be equipped with a window punch and seat belt cutter, but they are usually completely forgotten by car owners,” says Goldstein. For example, the T3 Tactical Auto Rescue Tool from Stat Gear features a 440c stainless steel serrated knife, seat belt cutter, spring-loaded window punch and LED light.
Goldstein asserts that the T3 or another similar tool should always be within arms length of a driver. “If for any reason a driver becomes pinned into his or her seat, emergency tools need to be within reach--otherwise they are useless. They will do you no good in your trunk or backseat.” The following is a quick demonstration on how to escape a sinking car with a baby on board.
【1】What is the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 1?
A. washed B. cleaned C. stuck D. discovered
【2】According to the passage, where should you put a window punch and a seat belt cutter in your car?
A. Near the driver’s seat. B. In the trunk.
C. In the back seat. D. Under the engine.
【What will be following the passage?
A. How to save a baby in a car.
B. How to help a baby escape from a car.
C. How to escape from a sinking car with a baby.
D. How to avoid sinking a car with a baby.
24、Wildlife crossings, which are human-made structures like underpasses, overpasses, or culverts (涵洞) that help animals move safely around their habitat, don’t just protect animals and biodiversity. They can also reduce the number of car collisions and save significant money, a new study finds.
“I thought it would be useful to provide some information on the financial benefits of wildlife crossing structures for policymakers, transportation planners, and conservationists”, says Wisnu Sugiarto, the author of the study.
For this study, Sugiarto studied collision information from the Washington State Department of Transportation. He examined data for 13 of the 22 wildlife crossings in Washington State from 2011 to 2020. Then he made adjustments based on how close the crossings were to other structures and the time it took to build them. He compared the numbers of wildlife-vehicle collisions each year before and after the construction of a wildlife crossing. Then he compared his analysis to that of a separate area in the state with no crossings at all.
“The findings reported that wildlife crossing structures reduced the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions (碰撞)by one to three accidents on average per mile per year, but not all structures had statistically significant effects”, Sugiarto says.
Using financial estimates from other research, he determined that a wildlife crossing offers an annual benefit of between $235,000 and $443,000 every year. Earlier studies focused on wildlife crossings in North Carolina, Utah, and Wyoming. They found wildlife underpasses and fencing could improve road safety, he says. “My findings complement the earlier studies and are also in favor of improving road safety.”
Besides, the findings are timely. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in 2021 includes $350 million over five years for the construction of wildlife crossings.
‘‘Before working on this research, I wasn’t aware of any strategies to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. I also thought we couldn’t do much about it, partly because we can’t communicate with wildlife or control their movement”, Sugiarto says. “However, it turns out that there are multiple strategies to handle issues related to wildlife-vehicle collisions and that we can do something about them.”
【1】What did Sugiarto think about conducting the study in paragraph 2?
A.It is necessary.
B.It is cost effective.
C.It is difficult to conduct.
D.It would educate the pedestrians.
【2】How did Sugiarto conduct his study?
A.By turning to previous findings.
B.By referring to professional data.
C.By analyzing the cause of collisions.
D.By interviewing different passers-by.
【3】Why are Sugiarto's findings considered to be timely?
A.They offer a way to ensure road safety.
B.They draw public attention to collisions.
C.They help improve the safety of wildlife crossings.
D.They provide evidence for new policies on wildlife crossings.
【4】What is the effect of the study on Sugiarto?
A.It makes him famous.
B.It gives him new topics to explore.
C.It changes his view on wildlife-vehicle collisions.
D.It provides inspiration for him to communicate with wildlife.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Larry had butterflies in his stomach. Today was the day for him to meet his girlfriend Kate’s parents. He was planning to leave them a good impression, so he was in his finest suit. On the way, he secretly recited a few jokes he picked up online the previous night. His weird behavior caught Kate’s attention.
“What are you doing, honey?” she asked. Blushing, Larry told her what he was doing. She, on the other hand, actually found his eagerness to please her family quite cute. “Well, let’s hear your jokes.” she said teasingly.
They were so immersed in their chatter and laughter that before they knew it, they had arrived at the house of Kate’s parents, who gave them a warm welcome. As an orphan, that night, Larry felt the love and warmth he had always longed for since childhood.
The next day, they drove downtown to pick their engagement ring. Everything was working out just perfectly. However, on their way home, a truck driven by a drunk driver smashed into their car, sending it flying off the roadside down a steep hill before it got stuck between several trees.
Larry struggled out of his seat to save the then unconscious Kate. As he made every effort to wake her up, the car began to slip down again. With only seconds to act, he hastily removed her seat belt and pushed her out of the car before it fell downhill again with him trapped inside.
A rescue team finally arrived and drove them to a nearby hospital. Under the doctors’ treatment, Kate woke up the next day. She was only slightly injured, but Larry remained unconscious due to severe damage done to his brain caused by the heavy impact.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右了;
