Compared to people who simply relaxed before eating the chocolate, those who had performed the ritual reported that the chocolate was more flavorful. Rituals appear to heighten how involved we are in our experiences.

Rituals can also help reduce anxiety and improve performance. In a 2020 study, researchers asked participants to engage in a task of singing a popular song in front of an experimenter, aiming to cause anxiety. Before singing, some participants just sat quietly while they waited, but others were asked to perform a ritual. The results showed that compared to participants who had sat quietly before singing, those who performed the ritual reported being less anxious and sang the song more accurately using the correct volume, key, and note duration. If you think Beyoncé performs well at her concerts, maybe her ritual has something to do with it.

We can include rituals into countless aspects of our lives. We can light a candle at the end of the workday to improve how much we enjoy our leisure time. We can regularly visit locations that are special to us to de-stress and feel more in control. We can meditate before important tasks to reduce our anxiety and improve our performance. 22、   Litterati is an app that people can use to upload information about litter they collect outside, such as its appearance, material, location, and brand. Shared online, this information contributes to building a global database of "litter maps", which can influence policy and packaging design.

"Society's failure to solve the litter problem has not been from a lack of trying. There have been public service announcements, and coastal cleanups. But I believe two components are missing from the discussion—community and data," said Jeff Kirschner, the developer of Litterati app.

Uploading pictures to an app shows users that they’re not the only ones picking up litter from public places and that others are invested in cleaning the planet, too. And the data accumulates rapidly, telling a story that helps people understand who picked up what, where, and when. In this way, people are encouraged to do more.

In San Francisco, the Litterati app was able to identify and map more than 5,000 pieces of litter in order to determine how much was caused by cigarettes specifically. Using this information the city successfully challenged a lawsuit by tobacco companies and doubled an existing cigarette sales tax, bringing in US $4 million annual revenue（税收）.

By joining forces with others using the same platform, individuals are able to take their anti-litter activism to another level. 23、   American Mark Levine wears many hats in China-educator, author, volunteer, musician, sociologist, cross-cultural communicator, winner of the Chinese government's Friendship Award, and most noticeably, wide-brimmed.

The bushy-bearded 73-year-old is perhaps best known among the Chinese public for writing American country music-style songs about China that he performs in full cowboy regalia. He often sings and plays his guitar to the accompaniment of the erhu played by his friend, Fu Han, in their musical duo, In Side Out. Levine has staged hundreds of performances in 15 provinces, and one had an audience over 50,000, he says.

Fu Han recalls he once performed in a well-known bar in Beijing's Houhai area, and she joined him on stage with her erhu. “A group of tourists from northern Europe came up and watched and filmed us, and started singing with us. I realized a Chinese instrument and face can help better tell China's stories to foreigners. So, they officially became band mates. I'm the 'in' and he's the 'out' in In Side Out,”she explains.

Levine plans to release a song book when he reaches 100 songs. He has so far written over 70 tunes that he calls "musical stories from my Chinese journey,, since he settled in Beijing in 2007 to take an occupation at Minzu University of China, where he still works, largely on account of its ethnic diversity.

“This is the farming of the future," said Paul Myers, co-founder of vertical farming enterprise Farm Urban. "Chemical-free and moving from the traditional horse and tractor agriculture that is steadily destroying the planet to a more sustainable approach."

The global vertical farming market is expected to be six times bigger in 2026 than it is today. This is fueled in part by rising demand for organic, chemical-free foods, but also by countries looking to increase their food security and cut down on imports — the UK for example uses more than 70 per cent of its land mass for agriculture but imports more than half of its food.
