21、Some people say that the planet is getting smaller, that there are few places left to explore, and that the age of exploration will be over soon.
I would argue instead that there has never been a greater need to explore. That’s because the stage for all exploration is the natural world, and nature is experiencing a rapid decline. It is by exploring that we understand and when we understand we develop an appreciation for what is found. Ultimately, only the things we appreciate are worth protecting.
As the golden age of exploration weakens, so does the richness of life on Earth. It isn’t just that there are fewer blank areas on the map; it is that wild places and spaces have been progressively carved up (瓜分). Visiting the Okavango Delta or Kalahari Desert, for example, no longer implies a self-supported expedition ( 考 察 ). Field stations pop up in important national parks and remote sensing by satellite becomes commonplace.
In the next century, I believe we will need larger and wilder areas. We will need the wilderness, not just for the protection of it, but because it is an important part of the ecosystems from which we gain our necessities like clean water, food and materials. If we succeed, then expeditions — brief travels into the wild that seek to answer questions, monitor populations, and inspire action — will have a renewed sense of purpose. More importantly, they greatly help the public experience, understand and appreciate nature.
Based on my own research expedition which aims to understand “edge effects”— how the changes in temperature at forest edges impact animals, I find it important that today’s scientists continue to spend time in the field. It is here that they begin to understand how seemingly unrelated environmental interactions influence their study system. Sometimes, it’s difficult to know which is important to measure until you stand out there on the forest edge.
It is the young generation that is the main force to lead the next wave of expeditions. The measure of their success will be whether there are still well-preserved wild places for expeditions in the future. Their leadership is needed now, more than ever.
【1】What’s the purpose of this text?
A.To suggest understanding nature by keeping exploring.
B.To advise people not to travel to unknown places.
C.To inform us about the reduced biodiversity.
D.To call on the public to support the study.

B.Close temporarily.
C.Develop quickly.
D.Differ greatly.
【4】What does the author realize after his research expedition?

22、Research has shown that disrupting one's natural “morning lark” (早起鸟) or “night owl” (夜猫子) tendency can result in immoral behavior at work.
Who doesn't love a flexible work schedule? Being able to make your own hours, come in when you're ready and leave when you're done, step out to attend a child's presentation at school, have a midday appointment, or even squeeze in a quick workout or nap as a guaranteed pick-me-up — flexibility greatly improves one's quality of life.
The benefits don't stop there, however. Research has shown that having flexible work hours actually makes one a better person. How so? It's been found that disrupted sleep patterns —in the form of having to act outside of your normal inclination to be a morning “lark” or a night “owl” — can result in strange, unethical, and out-of-line behavior.
Science journalist Linda Geddes said, “If you don't get enough sleep, research suggests you are more likely to have unethical behavior, such as being mean, bullying your fellow employees or falsifying receipts. But it's not just owls: the larks tend to behave more unethically in the evening, and owls in the morning. So ideally, you want to introduce flexible working."
Employers would be wise to allow their employees to start whenever they feel ready — whether it's at the crack of dawn or at 11 a.m., and to allow breaks or pauses in the day as needed — because that would mean better productivity, performance, and behavior.
This shift is already happening, with the New York Times recently reporting that 27 percent of US employers now offer the flexibility to work outside normal business hours, up from 22 percent in 2014; and 68 percent allow telecommuting as needed (up from 54 percent in 2014). With the national unemployment rate at its lowest in 50 years, employers are having to become more competitive in what they offer workers, and flex-hours seem like a no-brainer, highly beneficial to all.
【1】What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?
A.Ways to improve life quality.
B.People's activities in their free time.
C.Methods to get a flexible work schedule.
D.The advantages of flexibility in work time.
【2】What does the underlined word “inclination” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Judgment.
B.Tendency.
C.Reaction.
D.Choice.
【3】What is the effect to change people's sleep pattern according to Geddes?
A.They will show their nature more easily.
B.They tend to suffer from sleep problems.
C.They tend to behave immorally in their work.
D.They will get more flexibility in working time.
【4】What do the figures in the last paragraph indicate?
A.The unemployment rate is increasing.
B.Employers are getting more free time.
C.Flexible working has been creating more jobs.
D.More employers adopt a flexible work schedule.
23、Lawrence Huff hummed (发出连续低沉的声音) as he led his class of yoga students on a recent Friday afternoon.
Dressed in orange, the practitioners sat with their legs crossed.
In the back of the classroom, an officer sat with his arms folded, watching every move.
Every Friday, Huff volunteers to teach yoga to prisoners at the Metro West prison in Florida, US. The 71-year-old has been doing this for the past five years, and simply wants to share his love for yoga. “I come here as a volunteer and they are my students,” Huff said. “I really don’t get nervous. I know where I am, but I don’t view them individually as criminals, but just as people participating in a class.”
With the prison housing about 1,800 prisoners at any given time, there’s a waiting list to get into the class.
“I know this is a jail … but one day or another, these people are going to get released, so we want to make sure that they are productive members of society,” said Juan Diasgranados, public affairs manager for the prison.
Huff teaches yoga at two other jails and several libraries in Florida. When he’s not teaching yoga, he works as a substitute teacher at local schools. He said he got the idea for the yoga classes because he knew someone who had gone to prison, so he contacted local prisons and began offering his yoga services.
But what keeps him coming back each week? “Because the people are so appreciative. They are very enthusiastic about every aspect about it,” he said, “Because they spend most of their time in a dorm and are undergoing all kinds of stress, the classes are a peaceful space for them.”
Some prisoners have said the weekly yoga classes have given them something to look forward to, as they offer a break in their routines.
“It makes me feel focused; it recharges me,” one 42-year-old prisoner from Miami said.
“I always was familiar with yoga but didn’t actually understand it fully.
“Now that I am in here, there are all these books and literature around. I started studying it and now understand it. I have taken it to another level.”
【1】How might Huff describe teaching yoga in prisons?
A. Worthwhile. B. Disappointing. C. Profitable. D. Terrifying.
【2】How is Huff’s Yoga class with the prisoners?
A. It helps the prisoners to get to know each other better.
B. It is only given to those who will be released soon.
C. It is very popular with the prisoners.
D. It has made many prisoners more productive.
【3】What’s the most valuable part of doing yoga in some prisoners’ eyes?
A. It improves their physical health. B. It gives them a break from stress.
C. It helps them feel like a normal person. D. It helps them fit better into society.
【4】What is the best title of the passage?
A. Yoga Is For Everyone B. How to Practice Yoga
C. The Benefit of Yoga D. A Chance to Volunteer
24、What’s really green?
Most of us are aware that we must take care of the environment, and the majority of us take steps to save energy and reduce waste and pollution. But recently, some “green truths” have been shown to be only half true, or even completely false. 【1】
Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones.
Plastic bags cause litter and are a danger to wild animals, which mistake them for food. It takes hundreds of years for plastic to break down, but much less time for paper. Because of this, people think paper bags are the better environmental choice.
However, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy as making a plastic bag and up to three times the amount of water. 【2】 In fact, both kinds of bags are bad for the environment. So, take a reusable bag with you when you go shopping.
【3】
It seems like common sense: eating local food should be better for the environment, because it does not need to be transported long distances and kept cold during transport. 【4】 It is the production of food, not its transport, that uses most of the energy and produces most of the greenhouse gases. In some cases, local produce might have used more energy and produced more greenhouse gases than produce grown a long way away-even taking into account its transport.
It’s better to take a shower than a bath.
【5】 If you spend more than eight minutes in a shower, you’ll use as much water as in a bath-about 50 litres of water. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible.
Environmental awareness is now part of daily life. But it’s worth checking common ideas and opinions to see what’s really green.
A.So say no to plastic bags.
B.Here are some common ones.
C.Unfortunately, it is not that simple.
D.Eating local food is good for the environment.
E.The process also produces more greenhouse gases.
F.It’s time that we took measures to protect our environment.
G.It depends on how long you spend in the shower and how large your bath is.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The first time I saw Awol was on my doorstep in December 2016. He was super-cute, with black ears, a little white stripe and a soft white belly. I would give him a tickle (挠痒) behind the ear and he would rub around my legs to say hello. I had no idea where he came from.
I work shifts for a railway line and even if I got back late he would be waiting. As soon as I pulled into my street, he would follow my car, walk up the drive and roll over, wanting his belly tickled. I never fed him and had no intention of taking him in. I had never been a cat person. I always had dogs.
It was my friend who named him Awol. He wasn’t microchipped, so we gave him paper collars and put up posters, but no one got in touch.
He visited my house every day for three months. Every time I shut the door I could see him through the glass, staring up at me; he would meow for ages, trying to come in. It was heartbreaking. So, in March 2017, I decided to take him in.
I was slightly worried at first, because I had a parrot called Shitehawk that I had had for 15 years. To my surprise, they got on fine, Awol was nervous initially, wandering around sniffing everything. The next minute, he was zooming around the house.
I have a three-bedroom house and live alone, so I gave him free space to move around. He picked the spare room, but after a few weeks he began to sleep in my bed. He often purred (呼噜呼噜叫) like a motor running, pressing his feet, one after another, into my belly.
I adopted Awol around the time my grandmother, 80, who was my best friend, went into hospital.
