  • 22、In August, Jason M. Allen’s piece “Theatre D’opéra Spatial” — which he created with Al image generator Midjourney — won first place in the emerging artist division’s “digital arts photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. The definition for the category states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of the creative process”.

Allen’s award-winning image has led to debates about what, exactly, it means to be an artist and whether AI can truly make art. “It felt bad for the exact same reason we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics,” one Twitter user wrote. “This is the literal definition of ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” another tweeted.

Yet while Allen didn’t use a paintbrush, there was plenty of work involved, he said. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in elegant dresses and space helmets, in an attempt to mix Victorian-style costuming with space themes. Over time, with many slight changes to his written prompt (提示符), he created 900 different versions of what led to his final image. Then he improved its resolution through Gigapixel AI and finally had the images printed.

Allen is glad the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is attracting so much attention. “Rather than hating on the technology, we need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.

Cal Duran, one of the judges for the competition, said that while Allen’s piece included a mention of AI, he didn’t realize that when judging it. Still, he sticks by his decision to award it first place. “I think the AI technology may give more opportunities to people who may not find themselves artists in the conventional way,” he said.

【1】Why has Jason’s work led to debates?

    A.It was a copy of a photograph.

    B.He challenged the older artists.

C.It was created with the help of AI.

D.He broke the rule of the competition.

【2】What can best describe Allen’s creating process?

    A.Cooperative.

    B.Energy-consuming.

    C.Straightforward.

    D.Imagination-lacking.

【3】What can we learn about AI from the last paragraph?

    A.It is a double-edged sword.

    B.It attracts conventional artists.

C.It strikes art judges as no surprise.

D.It may open a new world to artists.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.A trend to be AI artists.

    B.An AI-generated art contest.

C.Responses to a winning AI artwork.

    D.Curiosity about an image generator.

  • 23、   A Japanese company has created a “smart” mask that aims to improve communication for people wearing face coverings to prevent the spread of COVTD-19.

The use of face masks has become normal in parts of the world still struggling to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. However, it can affect the quality of communication between wearers.

The wearable electronic device is designed to help improve speech communication in such conditions. The Japanese company Donut Robotics calls its invention the “e-mask”. The device is meant to fit over other kinds of face masks commonly worn by the public.

Made of soft plastic material, it contains a built-in microphone and has holes in the front to let air in. When turned on, the mask uses Bluetooth technology to connect to a mobile device. An app then helps users perform several actions, including turning speech into text, completing telephone calls and making the user's voice louder. The device can also translate a person's voice from Japanese into eight other languages.

Taisuke, the head of Donut Robotics, told the Reuters, “We worked hard for years to develop a robot and we have used that technology to create a product that responds to how the coronavirus has reshaped society.” He noted that the company raised $265,000 in just the first 37 minutes to develop the smart mask through a campaign on the Japanese crowdfunding service Fundinno. “It would usually take three or four months to get that kind of money,” Taisuke said.

The company produced a working model of the mask within a month by using software developed for its other robot products. The mask design was similar to one created years ago by one of the company's engineers that mapped facial muscles to interpret speech

Taisuke said the company plans to sell its first 5,000 e-masks starting in September, at about $40 per mask, in an effort to enter a global market that newly appeared.

【1】What's the purpose of the new “smart” mask?

A.To help protect people from being struck by COVID-19.

B.To help COVID-19 patients communicate with the doctors.

C.To make it convenient to communicate with face masks on.

D.To translate human thoughts or facial expressions into words.

【2】How does the e-mask perform its function?

A.By connecting to an app on a mobile device.

B.By using Bluetooth to make the user's voice clear.

C.By turning the wearer's dialect into standard language.

D.By being fitted into plastic face masks that people wear.

【3】How did Taisuke probably feel about the company's fundraising result?

    A.Somewhat relieved.

    B.Greatly encouraged.

    C.Slightly confused.

    D.Terribly disappointed.

  • 24、   On Wednesday, two things happened. In Syria, 80 people were killed by government airstrikes. Meanwhile, in Florida, Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched and fired a sports car into space. Guess which story has dominated mainstream news sites?

The launch of Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket, the most powerful ever launched by a private company, went off successfully. Musk sent his cherry-red Tesla roadster running toward Mars, launching “a new space age”. The event attracted phenomenal publicity and made the rocket launch a masterstroke of advertising for Tesla.

Meanwhile, in Syria, where hundreds of thousands of refugees may be forced to return to unsafe homes, a UN human rights coordinator for Syria said despondently(沮丧地) that he was no longer sure why he bothers to videotape the effects of bombing, since nobody ever pays attention. He wondered what level of violence it would take to make the world care.

There is, perhaps, no better way to appreciate the tragedy of 21st-century global inequality than by watching a billionaire spend $90m launching a $100,000 car into space.

Musk said he wanted to participate in a space race because “races are exciting” and that while strapping his car to a rocket may be “silly and fun … silly and fun things are important”. Thus, anyone who mentions the huge waste the project involves, or the various social uses to which these resources could be put, can be dismissed as a killjoy.

But one doesn’t have to hate fun to question the justification for pursuing a costly new space race at exactly this moment. If we examine the situation honestly, it becomes hard to defend a project like this.

A mission to Mars does indeed sound exciting, but it’s important to have our priorities straight. First, perhaps we could make it so that a child no longer dies of malaria every two minutes. Or we could try to address the level of poverty in Alabama which has become so extreme that the UN investigator did not believe it could occur in a first-world country. Perhaps when violence, poverty and disease are solved, then we can head for the stars.

Many might think that what Elon Musk chooses to do with his billions is Elon  Musk’s business alone. If he wanted to spend all his money on medicine for children, that would be nice, but if he’d like to spend it making big explosions and sending his convertible on a million-mile space voyage, that’s his right.

But Musk is only rich enough to afford these money-consuming projects because we have allowed social inequalities to arise in the first place. If wealth were actually distributed fairly in this country, nobody would be in a position to fund his own private space program.

Elon Musk is right: silly and fun things are important. But some of them are an indefensible waste of resources. While there are still humanitarian crises such as that in Syria, nobody can justify vast spending on rocketry experiments.

1Why does the writer mention the two pieces of news at the beginning of the passage?

A.To highlight the significance of SpaceX’s successful launch of a rocket and a car into space.

B.To illustrate the inequality of wealth distribution and the consequent inequality of attention distribution.

C.To appeal to the government for more attention to the air strikes and refugee crisis in Syria.

D.To find out which news dominated the mainstream news sites.

2Why did the UN human rights coordinator for Syria feel disappointed?

A.Because nobody appreciated his work and all the efforts he made.

B.Because the violence in Syria is not serious enough to make the world care.

C.Because however hard he tried, nobody seemed to care about the situation in Syria.

D.Because he had great difficulty videotaping the effects of bombing.

3What is implied in paragraph in 6 and 7?

A.The space project of SpaceX cost the government too much money.

B.Addressing problems of violence, poverty and diseases should be our top priority.

C.Space programs are a waste of money that cannot be justified.

D.It kills the fun to question the justification of the pursuit of space programs.

4What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

A.We should pay equal attention to space projects and solving social problems.

B.No private companies should be allowed to spend money in rocketry experiments.

C.The successful launch of SpaceX has distracted the world from more important things.

D.The money and resources used in space projects could have been used to deal with various social problems.
