二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Around the world coronavirus outbreak has messed up children's education. They began to be shut out of classrooms all the way back in February in 2020. Even in countries where schools have stayed open, lessons and tests have been disrupted. Some countries pressed ahead with national exams this year. A few others, including Britain, France and Ireland, cancelled them all. They came up with new ways of awarding grades instead. The fact that big exams have proved so vulnerable to disruption has led to new questions about their usefulness. Are there better ways of measuring what children have learned?

Exams have plenty of problems. They are often unreliable; a study in Israel found that test-takers' performance can be affected by smog. Many children find them stressful. Plenty of places run them badly. School-leavers in some countries are often set nonsense questions that require students to answer. Countries, including Algeria and Ethiopia , make efforts to shut down the internet at exam time to prevent potential cheating. Grades in American high schools are inflating fast, in part because pushy middle-class parents insist their little darlings deserve better.

Cancelling exams does not always reduce pupils' anxiety. In many countries the prospect 一and pressure一of exams probably helped get pupils back into classrooms after lockdowns came to an end. Those facing important tests were generally invited back to school first. Their return helped give teachers and parents confidence that other. pupils could safely join them. Kenya ended up letting exam-takers return to school in October, even though it had previously announced that it was cancelling all classes until the end of 2020. Some countries that called off exams this year are still deciding whether and how to hold them in 2021.

Governments may need to adjust next year's tests, as many did this year. That could mean cutting the amount of material to be tested. Exam boards may also have to boost the grades of pupils who have spent the most time out of the classroom. But the most important exams should go ahead in some form.

Many pupils have studied ferociously throughout this difficult year. They should have the chance to earn the grades they deserve.

【1】In the Israeli study, what results in exam's unreliability?

A.Some countries shut down internet at exam time.

B.Exams' grades can be affected by children's temper.

C.Questions in exams measure what has been learned.

D.Teachers may give unreal grades to meet special needs.

【2】What can we know about the pressure of exams?

A.It always makes students anxious in exams.

B.It is relieved when exams are cancelled.

C.It gives teachers confidence to return school safely.

D.It helps students get back on track after quarantines.

【3】According to the last paragraph, what governments need to do next year?

    A.Change the testing materials.

    B.Cancel the most important exams.

C.Raise the grades of student who kept studying.

D.Reschedule the exams which are cancelled this year.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Education and Examinations

    B.Covid-19 and School Exams

    C.Ways Better than Examinations

    D.How to Pass Examinations

  • 22、Standing on the shore of a lake, I can’t help wondering about the tens or hundreds of thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time.

And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks?

Even the tallest mountains have worm down; none are as tall as they were 1000 years ago. And much like a rock, I’ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun.

Once I was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life flowing quickly over me, my edges are softer and more understanding I’m less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together.

But I’m not a rock. I’m a human being filled with all the drama built into my DNA.

Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask several people to leave for not wearing masks. Not forceful and not rude. On the door read a sign: “Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don’t like it either, but let’s all do what we can to get through this together.”

The group of young men wished to argue about the note.

I sat watching, understanding both sides. I’ve been those guys before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from experiences by looking through the eyes of others. In learning to be more open, I’ve also found more happiness and success.

You can put more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others.

Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another’s point of view.

I placed a rounded stone into my jacket pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again.

【1】What does the author compare the rocks to?

    A.People’s abilities.

    B.People’s character.

    C.What nature offers us.

    D.Challenges that we meet.

【2】The owner refused the young men into the restaurant because_________.

    A.they argued with him

    B.their behaviors were impolite

C.they were unwilling to obey his rule

    D.they were wearing informal clothes

【3】The underlined phrase “chip away at” probably means________.

    A.fight against

    B.do harm to

    C.get on well with

    D.adapt to

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

    A.Be brave when facing difficulties.

    B.Be understanding towards others.

C.We learn from waters of life.

    D.Our edges soften over time.

  • 23、Like many inventions, language translators were imagined by writers long before they became real. In Hugo Gernsback's 1911 novel A Romance of the Year 2660, characters use a video telephone that can translate form one language to another. A language translator also appears in Murray Leinster's 1945 First Contact. In that story. humans and creatures from another planet construct a translation device together after making first contact with one another. The idea of the language translator didn't become truly popular, however, until the “universal translator” appeared in the Star Trek series, which delighted television viewers in the 1970s. That device was universal in the sense that it could translate any language that it encountered.

The first real language translator was demonstrated by engineers from the IBM company and Georgetown University in 1954. Their machine could only translate Russian sentences into English.

Language translators have come a long way since then. Today, online translations can be accessed easily at no cost to users. With translation apps like Google Translate or iTranslate, users sometimes don't even have to look things up. All they need to do is point their cellphone's camera at some writing, and a translation instantly appears. If users want to translate something being said aloud, they just turn on their phone's microphone. All of these features save time and effort.

Translation apps make foreign travel much easier than before. They are invaluable when it comes to communicating with taxi drivers or hotel staff who don't speak a traveler's native language. But these apps are far from perfect. Sometimes a translation makes no sense, forcing the user to guess what the translation means. At other times, the user might not know that the translation has failed until he or she shows it to native speaker.

【1】What does the article imply about language translators?

A.Their parts were too difficult to manufacture.

B.Their legal status was in doubt for some time.

C.Their looks have changed little over the years.

D.Their origins can be found in science fiction.

【2】What does the article point out about online translations?

    A.They're longer than necessary.

    B.They're available free of charge.

    C.They're offensive to some people.

    D.They're published on social media.

【3】Which aspect of Google Translate or iTranslate does the article emphasize?

    A.Their understanding of classic idioms

B.Their leisurely approach to analyzing texts.

    C.Their intemal software and processes.

    D.Their convenience in different situations.

【4】How does the writer conclude this article?

A.By noting that language translators don't have any competition.

B.By discussing how language translators are expected to evolve

C.By explaining why language translators aren't totally reliable

D.By describing the important virtues of language translators

New Testing Method in Era of Online Learning

In research published today in Science of Learning, engineers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute demonstrate how a testing strategy they call “distanced online testing” can effectively reduce students’ ability to receive help from one another in order to score higher on a test taken at individual homes during social distancing.

“Often in remote online exams, students can talk over the phone or internet to discuss answers,” said Ge Wang, a chair professor of biomedical engineering at Rensselaer and the corresponding author on this paper. “The key idea of our method is to minimize this chance via discrete optimization(离散优化)aided by knowledge of a student’s competencies.”

When a distanced online test is performed, students receive the same questions, but at varying times depending on their skill level. For instance, students of highest mastery levels receive each question after other groups of students have already answered those questions. This approach, Wang said, reduces the motivator for students to receive help from those who have more mastery of the material. In order to determine the order of each student’s questions, their competence levels are estimated using their grade point averages, SAT scores, or midterm scores, depending on what is available at a specific point in the semester.

According to statistical tests and post-exam surveys, this method reduced the points gained through cheating by orders of magnitude (数量级) when compared to conventional exam methods. As an added benefit, Wang said, when students knew collusion would not be possible, they were more motivated to study class material. Wang and his colleagues hope to share this innovation of teaching methods and theory beyond the Rensselaer campus.

“We plan to develop a good platform so that others can easily use this method,” said Wang, a member of the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Rensselaer.
