21、Tommy, a 26-year-old chimp(猩猩),lives in a small cage in a used truck sales lot in New York. Retired from movie work and whatever else once occupied him, he has no chimp friends to keep him company — just a TV. He is worlds away from the rainforest of Western Africa, where chimps spend most of their lives in trees, hunting, and socializing together.
His owner hasn't broken any laws, but an animal rights group called the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) is trying to change the view. The group says chimps have such a humanlike intelligence that they should be recognized as “legal persons" and be placed in an animal shelter and wander free.
You've probably heard the term “animal rights”, but animals don't actually have rights in many countries. Animal-welfare laws punish people who mistreat animals, but that's not the same as chimps having a right to liberty or anything else.
NhRP's first step is to ask a judge to end people's unjust arrest on behalf of Tommy and other privately owned chimps. If the court decides to recognize chimps as legal persons, NhRP's next step will be arguing for what rights the chimps should be granted. "The right that we believe they should have most of all is the right to bodily liberty," says Wise, a NhRP group member. "They should be able to choose how to live their lives.”
Tommy's owner, Pat Lavery, says he rescued Tommy from a careless owner about a decade ago and denies the chimp is mistreated or unhappy. "He likes being by himself," he says.
“There's a danger in making a jump to say they're just like people," says Richard Cupp, a professor who writes about animals and the law. "If we' re really focused on chimps being very, very smart, then who knows if maybe someday we might …say, ‘Hey, here's a particular human being that's not very smart at all, maybe the chimps have higher status than this person.’”

B.Uncaring.
C.Worried.

23、 Most sea turtles, whales and fish may have plastic in their bodies. To determine the various forms and colors of this material in marine animals, Marga Rivas at the University of Almeria in Spain and her team analyzed data from 112 studies published in the past decade. These looked for microplastics and larger macro plastics in marine species globally.
Of the studies, 80 examined the gastrointestinal tracts (胃肠道)of animals to see what they had taken in. The others also looked at wider animal tissues to identify plastics that end up in other parts of the body. After examining all of the data, Rivas and her team concluded that 66 per cent of sea turtles have white-colored macro and microplastics in their systems, while 55 percent have a distinct class of plastic called microfibers, which are shed by some fabrics (织物). The high amount of white plastic in turtles was unsurprising, says Rivas, given that plastic of this color, particularly larger pieces, may resemble jellyfish, a large part of the animals' diets.
Microfibers were also present in 80 percent of whales and dolphins - and white macro and microplastics in 38 percent of them. The researchers also concluded that clear fiber microplastics are probably the most common form of this waste that is taken in by large marine animals globally. Rivas and her colleagues also discovered that the animals with the highest rates of plastic were those in the Mediterranean and the northeast Indian Ocean.
“The Mediterranean is the most contaminated sea in the world, so we expected to find these results,” says Rivas. Marine plastic pollution has increased roughly 10-fbld since 1980, and Rivas says the problem is worsened by inadequate water treatment systems. In parts of India and the southeast Mediterranean, waste water isn’t adequately treated or recycled, she says. This means that microfibers shed by fabrics in washing machines, and larger pieces of rubbish, enter the sea. “It’s possible to introduce management strategies to control these huge threats,” says Rivas.
【1】How did Rivas and her team conduct the study?
A.By doing comparative experiments.
B.By analyzing data from previous studies.
C.By determining the forms and colors of plastics.
D.By looking for plastics in global marine animals.
【2】Why was it unsurprising to find a large amount of white plastic in sea turtles?
A.White plastic looks like the food sea turtles consume.
B.More while plastic was in the sea than that of other colors.
C.White plastic is the most common form of the plastic waste.
D.White microfibers from fabrics were abundant in the oceans.
【3】What does the underlined word “contaminated” probably mean in the last paragraph?

24、 When my grandmother died at the age of 96, there were two things she left behind in abundance---nearly 100 photo albums documenting decades of travel and home life, and a dozen quilts, one of which my mother gave me.
Quilting is the process of sewing together fabric(作料)to make one large piece of fabric. In my family, quilting and sewing is a tradition that has been passed down through the generations. My mother says her great-grandmother would occasionally travel around New York State to sew clothing for other families.
In the United States, quilting was a craft(手艺)that started as a necessity and eventually became much more. In 1862, the U.S. government offered millions of acres of land to Americans who wanted to move west. This allowed families to settle on land that that could eventually own. They often built their own homes and lived off the vegetables in their gardens and the livestock they had. Sewing was very important for women because they were responsible for clothing their families and keeping them warm.
Quilting also became a chance for women to socialize with each other. They would gather for so-called “quilting bees”,where they would meet up and work on one quilting project together. This provided a much-needed relief from the lonely life of living on a large piece of land.
Throughout history, the different patterns on American quilts have conveyed all kinds of information. From then,we can tell where a person lived, what region of the world they originated from, or sometimes a story is told in pictures on a quilt.
Even today, women still gather to quit together in a show of friendship and a love for the craft, just like the old days.My sister has tried quilting a few times, and hopefully, her two daughters may one day continue this family tradition.
【1】What do we know about quilting?
A. It is a lost traditional craft.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a rainy night in March 2013, my husband Reece went out to get a box that he had forgotten in his car. On his way back inside, he noticed a small shadow moving on the driveway. He walked towards it quietly, and found it was a small hedgehog(刺猬), all wet in the grass, eating mud. Reece quickly removed his jacket and picked it up. The hedgehog was very weak and unable to move about quickly. But he did not seem to be frightened; nor did he resist being scooped up (抱起).
Once he was inside, Reece called out to me, saying that he had something that would make my heart melt, and he was right! We named the hedgehog Alf, because, just like the TV show character of the‘'80s, he came out of nowhere. And, like Alf the alien, this little hedgehog was amazingly intelligent. Not only did he learn to eat his dinner and drink water from his bowls, but he also learnt to wait for us inside his little indoor cubby house and hop into his pet carrier whenever we took him out with us.
Alf knows us very well and recognizes both our voices. He does not roll into a ball or put his spines up. Every day he allows us to pat him. He loves playing with paper and towels and will bite and tug on the bed sheets if given a chance. Like all pets, Alf loves his treats, in particular small pieces of sugar-coated biscuits.
Unfortunately, in April 2014, I was in a car accident and had to spend two months in the hospital. And boy, did I miss Alf! Reece told me that Alf would search around the house for me, checking in places where I'd normally be, such as my desk, my favorite seat in front of the TV and even my side of the bed.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One evening, Reece set up a video call for me from my hospital bed.
