  • 21、   Bird expert Stephen Kress remembers the first time he encountered puffins (角嘴海雀). “I was totally amazed from the moment I saw them,” he says. Two years after his first encounter, while teaching at a nature camp in Maine, Kress learned that the state's puffin colonies were all but destroyed by hunters in the late 1800s. The puffins were killed for their eggs, meat and feathers.

Kress decided to learn more about these “special birds.” His fascination grew into Project Puffin, a decades-long effort to bring the puffins back to Maine. Kress ran the project while working for the National Audubon Society, a major bird conservation nonprofit in the US.

Project Puffin’s origins lie on an uninhabited seven-acre island, six miles off the coast of Maine, called Easter Egg Rock. The tiny island, accessible only by rowboat, is free from predators (捕食者) and edged with rocks under which the puffins nest.

Starting in 1973, Kress’s team collected chicks from Greet Island, off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, which had a healthy puffin population. The team hand -raised puffins in artificial holes, feeding them vitamin-enriched fish twice a day. “They would come out when they were six weeks old and they would work their way to the edge of the island and swim off,” says Kress.

For four years, however, none of the birds returned to the island to breed (繁殖). The project’s supporters began to question whether they would ever succeed. “That's when I began trying to think like a puffin,” Kress says.“Puffins nest in colonies because they like being with others of their kind and large groups provide protection from predators.” He thought that the young puffins did remember the island but were not brave to come ashore. Kress’s new idea was to place wooden puffins around the island, to help the birds feel safe. It worked.

Thanks to his pioneering method, Project Puffin says there are now around 1,300 pairs of puffins nesting on islands in the Gulf of Maine. What's more, the techniques Kress developed to save puffins are now used by seabird conservationists around the world.

【1】What happened to Maine’s puffins in the late 19th century?

    A.Finding proper food for puffins.

  • 23、A new study of older adults finds too much daytime napping (小睡) may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Investigators from Brigham report a relationship between daytime napping and cognitive (认知的) aging: too much daytime napping predicts an increased future risk of Alzheimer’s, and Alzheimer’s speeds up the increase in daytime napping during aging.

“Daytime sleep behaviors of older adults are often ignored, and an agreement for daytime napping in clinical practice and health care is still lacking,” said Peng Li of the Medical Program in Brigham, “Our team calls for a closer attention to 24-hour sleep patterns — not only nighttime sleep but also daytime sleep—for tracking the health of older adults.”

Researchers at the Brigham recognized that all previous studies on Alzheimer’s disease assessed napping within a participant only once, and most of the studies were subjective and questionnaire-based. In the new study, more individuals, with an average age of 81, were involved. They were provided with Actical, a watch-like device, to wear on their wrist for up to 14 days. After napping periods were identified, the nap duration and frequency were calculated.

The results suggested that too much daytime napping may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s, and that faster yearly increase in daytime napping may be a worsening sign of the disease.

Researchers acknowledge that although the method of the new study has been widely used in sleep field studies, they recognize that Polysomnography (多导睡眠记录仪) is the gold standard for sleep scoring. Moreover, the participants studied are older, and therefore, the findings may not be easily translated to younger people. In addition, future studies should test whether a direct intervention in daytime napping can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s or cognitive decline.

“We hope to draw more attention to daytime sleep patterns,” said co-senior author Kun Hu of the Medical Program. “Sleep changes are critical in shaping the internal changes in the brain.”

【1】What is the possible relationship between daytime napping and Alzheimer’s disease?

A.More daytime napping causes Alzheimer’s disease.

B.Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented by more daytime napping.

C.Alzheimer’s disease decreases the time spent on daytime napping.

D.More daytime napping indicates a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

【2】What can we learn about the new study according to the passage?

    A.The sample size was larger.

B.It only recorded the daytime napping.

C.The study was based on questionnaires.

D.Its findings can be applied to younger generations.

【3】What will interest the researchers in future studies?

    A.The patterns of nighttime sleep.

    B.The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

C.The application of the new study method.

D.The effect of an intervention in daytime napping.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Alzheimer’s: a Sign of Aging

B.Actical: a Device of Recording Napping

C.Closely Linked: Daytime Napping and Alzheimer’s

D.Slightly Different: Daytime Sleep and Nighttime Sleep

  • 24、Bristol University will offer students lessons in happiness. The university is offering the 12-week course to students from all university disciplines next year, which will count towards 20 of their 120 credit points for their first year on campus. The course, to be taught by Professor Bruce Hood, an expert who studies how the brain works and how humans think, will explore what happiness is and how to achieve it.

Last year, 400 students signed up for a pilot happiness course at the university, which did not result in academic credits, as part of the university’s efforts to improve well-being. Professor Hood said, “We’re really excited that the university has got behind the course. This course will be built and established on what we’ve already learnt in the first year but of course we’re going to monitor the students much more closely because it’s for academic credits. They can’t take an easy option—they’ve really got to put in a lot of effort.”

The voluntary course was originally introduced amid(在……当中)growing concerns about student mental health. Last year, students called for more support and services for young people with mental health issues at the university. Under the new course, students will attend a one-hour lecture each week as well as attending a “happiness hub”. Lectures will address a series of issues, including whether happiness is in the genes and if it can really be changed, how our minds influence happiness and the role of culture in happiness.

Students will be asked to select one of seven happiness exercises to practise for a week, and then evaluate(评估) the effect it has on them. This will be discussed at the weekly happiness hub meetings. The exercises include sleeping more, meditating(冥想), expressing gratitude for people and things, and practising random acts of kindness.

【1】Who will get credit points on the lessons in happiness?

【3】What can students do by taking the happiness course?

A.They can give speeches on different issues.
