二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances, which is why when Sophie Murphy boarded a recent flight from Sydney to Melbourne and noticed an awful “tension” in the cabin, she first thought it was caused by typical bad-tempered passengers. But as the flight neared its end, it became obvious that something was very wrong.

A teenage boy with Down syndrome(唐氏综合症)who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew's warnings over the loudspeaker when it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the airport, delaying the landing and angering people on the already tense flight.

“If it was a cartoon, ” remembered Murphy, “there would have been smoke coming out of people's ears.”

As the boy's elderly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, but in vain, Murphy, 42, who had been a teacher for more than 20 years, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.

She found the boy in the passage, lying on his belly, and lay down on her stomach to face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite book, and his favorite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him. Minutes later, he allowed her to hold his hand and then together they got properly back into airplane seats. Murphy asked for sick bags, and held them as the boy threw up several times, including on her. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay and that they'd get through it together.

After the plane was finally able to land, no one was impatient to step off the flight as one might expect. Instead, calmed passengers--obviously following Murphy's amazing example--allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents tearfully thanked Murphy for what she had done, and a doctor sitting nearby also let her knew he had even taken notes on her expert way of handling the situation.

【1】The landing was delayed because ________.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Murphy?

  • 27、If you are a fruit grower — or would like to become one —join in Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in fact it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has become popular, events now last through most of October around Britain.

Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety(品种) of apples. To people who are used to the limited kinds of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite eye-opening to see some classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try.

There are also varieties developed to suit certain local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall in love with it.

At the apple events, you can also meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well entertained with apple-themed fun and games.

Apple days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, visit the National Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

【1】What can people do at the apple events?

    A. Attend experts’ lectures.

    B. Visit fruit-loving families.

    C. Taste many kinds of apples.

    D. Plant fruit trees in an orchard.

【2】What can we learn about Decio?

    A. It is a new variety.

    B. It is rarely seen now.

    C. It has a strange look.

    D. It has a special taste.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. A clever idea. B. A selfish thought.

    C. A great plan.   D. A useless hope.

    Saving the Galaxy

I pressed my face to the school-bus window as we passed the big movie screen. Galaxy Drive-In (银河汽车影院) one sign said. CLOSED said another.

I got off the bus at my stop and waved to Mom. I asked her about that drive-in down the street as we walked into the house. Mom told me that it had closed a couple years before.

But that night, I heard music coming through my window. When I looked out, I could see lights flashing on the drive-in’s screen. The thought of fear crossed my mind.

The next day, after breakfast Mom and I walked over to check things out. The place was like a big parking lot with weeds coming out through cracks. We were looking at an old movie poster when an old man got out of a car.

He introduced himself as Nick. “When my dad opened this place in 1957, we’d get 300 cars on a good night, but now I have to close it because I can’t afford a digital projector (放映机), which is very expensive.” Nick explained that all movie companies just provide digital movies instead of film (胶片) movies. Then Nick allowed us to look around and invited us to come by before dusk.

That night, Nick made an old movie come to life. As I sat next to Mom, I kept thinking about the excitement of seeing that big screen light up. Nick had looked so happy talking about the old days. If only he could get that projector.
