二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It is a hot summer day,and you feel thirsty. A friend gives you a glass of cold lemonade. How do you feel when you see the glass? Will you describe your feeling as happiness or as pleasure? I believe you will say it is a feeling of pleasure. There is a connection between these two kinds of feelings, and sometimes one causes the other, but they are not the same.Pleasure is more dependent on the five senses while happiness is independent of them.

When you are happy, little unpleasant events usually do not disturb you. When you are unhappy, you feel as if everything is against you.You may compensate for it by eating chocolate and sweets because this gives you pleasure;yet you stay unhappy.A person may smoke cigarettes because it gives him pleasure, yet, this does not make him happier, especially if he knows the fact that it is not good for his health

The physical world is always in a changing state. At each moment a new thing is being created, changed, transformed and then destroyed. This is the normal state of things and no one can change it.If we stay still in a certain state,we are sure to experience unhappiness sooner or later. On the other hand,if we adjust to the environment, nothing can influence our moods. Then outer events have nothing to do with our inner joy of mind.

The room of the mind was filled with worry or fear.If you are free of thinking about them, the room has been emptied, and then you will see what is happening and experience it When your mind stays quiet, you will see that happiness comes from the inside.

【1】What does the underlined phrase“compensate for”in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

A.to make a suitable payment for

B.to let out your anger for

C.to provide with a balancing effect for

2According to the passage, in which of the following situations can you feel happy?

A.A friend gives you a glass of cold lemonade when you feel thirsty.

B.You eat chocolate and sweets when you feel as if everything is against you.

C.Smoke cigarettes even though you know the fact that it is not good for your health.

D.You are free from worry or fear when your mind stays quiet.

3We can learn from the passage

A.happiness is more dependent on the five senses

    B.pleasure sometimes arouses happiness

C.you feel happy when nothing around you changes in a certain state

D.you feel unhappy because you have to adjust to the environment

4Which can be the best title for the passage?

A.Pleasure Leads To Happiness   B.Happiness Changes Us

C.Happiness Is Within Us D.Stay A Quiet Mind

  • 27、Yesterday Matt was sick. I picked up Archie from the sitter and Eloise from school and decided to run to the supermarket for a few things. I had hoped to be in and leave in a hurry.

I found just one person ahead of me and began organizing my items on the cart in advance. After placing my items, I looked up to see that the person ahead of me was an elderly woman. She was paying for her items with change and wanted to purchase each separately. I watched the young employee help her count her change, ever so carefully taking it from her shaking hands. I listened to him repeatedly saying “yes, mam” to her. When he asked if she had enough to buy a reusable bag, she told him she did. He went two lines over to get one for her and then repackaged her items. Never once did this employee roll his eyes. He was nothing but patient and kind.

As I was watching them, I saw that Eloise was too. She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the change. I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all. My daughter was being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger.

When the woman was finished, the employee began ringing up my items and thanked me for my patience. I then thanked him for teaching us patience and kindness by his treatment of that elderly woman. When he finished, I pushed my cart through the store trying to find the manager. I wanted her to know of the employee’s great quality. After sharing the story with her, we left. But what is more, a heart full of gratefulness for such an invaluable lesson.

【1】Why did the writer organize her items in advance?

A.Because she had to pick up Archie.

B.Because her baby was seriously sick.

C.Because she wanted to be very quick.

D.Because she saw a woman before her.

【2】What made the young employee work slowly?

A.The elderly woman paid each item with change.

B.The young employee’s hands shook all the time.

C.The elderly woman could not afford a large bag.

D.The young employee rolled eyes now and then.

【3】What does “this valuable lesson” in the third paragraph mean?

A.Going two lines to buy the old woman a bag.

B.Learning to count the change very quickly.

C.Showing patience and kindness to the others.

D.Standing next to the others without speaking.

【4】What is the writer’s purpose of finding the manager?

    A.Complaining the long time waiting.

B.Praising the patient and kind employee.

    C.Thanking for their high-quality goods.

D.Discussing the proper attitude to others.

  • 28、People in Japan tend to live longer and stay healthier in their later years, with an increasing number of old people living alone. Japan is on a fast track to “ultra-age” with people aged 65 or above accounting for 28 percent of its total population in 2019;it was 26.7 percent in 2017. On the other hand, the number of births in 2019 fell to its lowest (about 941,000) since records began in 1899.

Demand for care services for elderly people has increased. A shrinking (缩小) working population means fewer able-bodied adults are available to look after the elderly. State-provided facilities for the elderly are not enough, which causes elderly people to turn to private ones but they are expensive.

The country will be short of 380,000 of health nurses by 2025. The government has to turn to advanced robots to meet the shortage. A study found that using robots encouraged one third of the people to become more active and independent. Yet there is no robot that can provide the emotional support to the elderly.

Japan provides a case study for China, which is also faced with a fast aging population. 17.23 million babies were born in China in 2019, about 630,000 fewer than in 2018. People aged 60 accounted for 17.3 of China’s population in 2019. With a shortage of elderly care facilities and unbalanced supply, China may find it hard to deal with the rapidly increasing number of senior citizens.

To meet the challenge, the Chinese government should make policy changes, which Japan is unwilling or unable to do or even consider. China should pay attention to the signals its aging population is sending and take proper and timely action.

【1】What do we learn about the old Japanese?

A.More and more old Japanese prefer to live on their own.

B.A lot of old Japanese have to continue working at old age.

C.Some old Japanese remain active with the help of robots.

D.Japanese aged 65 or above make up one third of its population.

【2】What can we know about state-provided care facilities for the elderly in Japan?

    A.They are expensive.

    B.They are inconvenient.

    C.They are affordable.

    D.They are fashionable.

【3】What do the Japanese do to deal with the shortage of health nurses?

    A.They hire foreign health nurses.

    B.They employ advanced robots.

C.They set up more nursing schools.

D.They train the elderly to tend themselves.

【4】What is the main idea of the last two paragraph?

A.Japan has to take action to deal with the aging population.

B.Robots can’t provide emotional support to the elderly.

C.China is now faced with a fast aging population.

D.Japan’s aging population issue is a timely lesson for China.

  • 29、   Many cities in the world are benefiting from the night activities of a group of people who call themselves guerrilla (游击队) gardeners. Armed with trowels, spades and a van full of flowers and plants, guerrilla gardeners turn abandoned urban land into a blaze of color. In city centre locations where there was mud, weeds and empty plastic bottles, residents often wake up to find that the wasted area has been transformed overnight with brightly-colored bedding plants.

In most British cities, local governments and police turn a blind eye to the effort of the gardeners, whose activities are always carried out under cover of nightfall. And so far, there has been nothing but praise from the astonished and delighted local residents when they find their neighborhood transformed in such a striking fashion.

Not only do the guerrilla gardeners beautify ignored places, they also return regularly to water the plants and weed the flower beds. They also make sure that at least some of the plants they bring are evergreens, which means that the area doesn't look depressing in the winter months.

The first guerrilla gardener in London was Richard Reynolds, whose day job is at an advertising agency. Mr. Reynolds, a graduate of Oxford University, began his efforts two years ago when he moved to a flat in tower block in South London. From his balcony, he could see several empty concrete pots, placed by the local governments to contain plants but never used. He went out after midnight and filled the pots with plants, and then planted more flowers in the path leading to the entrance to the block.

He then set up a website to explain his plan and called upon more gardeners to join him. Cash donations flooded in and, more importantly, volunteers rushed to be part of the movement. Within six months, there were five hundred people in London prepared to come out at very short notice to restore neglected parts of the urban landscape. There are now unofficial but carefully-organized groups in many cities in Britain and North America and there is also a website where would-be urban gardeners can find out the location of the next expedition.

【1】These guerrilla gardeners do their work _______.

A.at the request of the government

    B.nearby their houses

C.often in return for others' help

D.out of their own free will

【2】Richard Reynolds decided to fill the pots with plants in order to ________.

A.plant more flowers in the path

    B.beautify the neighborhood

C.attract attention for his ad agency

    D.make himself well-known

【3】Why did the guerrilla gardeners often return to their night working places?

    A.To look after these plants.

    B.To enjoy these beautiful flowers.

C.To change the varieties of the plants.

D.To help plants live through winter months.

【4】What can be inferred about these guerrilla gardeners?

A.They will later get well paid.

B.They become more and more organized.

C.They are mainly from the United Kingdom.

D.They are still not accepted by the local government.
