二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The microplastics(微型塑料) problem in the oceans has made its way to sea turtles in a big way. A new study has found microplastics in the stomach of every single turtle they tested—a total of 102 sea turtles.

The researchers tested more than 100 sea turtles from all seven kinds and three different oceans, and they were looking for man-made things less than 5 mm long. The most things the team found were fibers, which most likely came from clothing and fishing equipment.

“The influence of these particles on turtles is unknown,” said Emily Duncan. “Their small size means they can pass through the stomach without causing a problem, as is frequently reported with larger plastic pieces.”

The researchers found more than 800 man-made particles in the turtles, but since they only tested part of the stomach, they believe the total number of particles could be 20 times higher. They don’t know how the turtles take in the particles, but they think they are from polluted seawater and polluted plants.

Professor Brendan Godley said that eating microplastics isn’t the biggest problem to sea turtles at the moment, but it is a clear sign that we need to do a better job watching global waste.

This turtle study shows that we need to reduce the amount of plastic waste, so we can keep clean and healthy oceans for future people.

1The underlined part in paragraph 1 probably means “________”.

A.has gone into B.has made great effect on

C.has been walking to D.has tried to escape from

2How did the researchers find out the microplastics problem

A.By giving examples. B.By comparing sea life.

C.By studying different sea animals. D.By testing turtles from different seas.

3What can be inferred from Emily?

A.Larger plastic pieces cause trouble to sea turtles

B.Eating microplastics is the biggest danger to sea turtles

C.Scientists know clearly how sea turtles eat plastic pieces

D.The number of particles inside sea turtles is much higher

4The purpose of the text is to call on people to ________.

A.stop killing sea animals B.find out more plastic waste

C.control pollution to oceans D.carry out further researches

  • 27、Since the sex of a sea turtle(海龟)is determined by the heat of sand hatching the eggs, scientists had suspected they might see slightly more females. Climate change, after all, has driven sea temperatures higher, which, in these creatures, favors female children. They found female sea turtles from Raine Island, the Pacific Ocean's largest and most important green sea turtle living area, now outnumber males by at least 116 to 1. "This is extreme," says turtle scientist Camryn Allen.

Biologist Michael Jensen wanted to know if climate change had already changed turtles' sexes. By using genetic(基因的) tests, he'd figured out that he could follow turtles of all ages. Still, his research data would lack an important detail: sex. Only after a turtle matures is it possible to tell its sex from the outside -- mature males have slightly longer tails. By then turtles can be decades old, so scientists often use Iaparoscopy(腹腔镜检查),sending a thin tube into each animal, but that's not so practical if you're hoping to examine hundreds of creatures. Fortunately, at a turtle conference, he met Allen, and all she needed was a little blood.

They compared their results with temperature data for nesting beaches. What worries them is that Raine Island has been producing almost female turtles for at least 20 years. This is no small thing. More than 200,000 turtles come to nest there. During high season, 18,000 turtles may settle in at once. "But what happens in 20 years when there are no more males coming up as adults? Are there enough to maintain the population?" says Allen. They also found cooler beaches in the south are still producing males, but that in the north, it's almost entirely females hatching. These findings clearly point to the fact that climate change is changing many aspects of wildlife biology.

But how widespread is this phenomenon -- and what is the consequence?

【1】How might the scientists feel if there were slightly more female turtles?

    A.It's normal.

    B.It's unique.

    C.It's extreme.

    D.It's doubtful.

    【2】What is a scientist's conventional way to identify a turtle's sex?

    A.Testing its blood.

    B.Doing genetic tests.

    C.Using laparoscopy.

    D.Watching its tail.

【3】Why do the findings worry Jensen and Allen?

A.Too many females gather near Raine Island.

B.Sea turtles may end up dying out.

    C.Turtle populations are in decline.

D.Female turtles cause temperatures to rise.

【4】What does the last paragraph imply?

    A.People should stop the phenomenon.

B.People have to test the consequence.

C.Climate change has changed sea turtles' sexes.

D.More work needs doing about the phenomenon.

  • 28、As the parent of two teenagers who have played multiple sports over the years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolutely cruel.

However, when I think about the value of sports and why my kids continue to play sports, I find that playing sports can help kids become successful adults. Through sports, kids learn how to work in teams, how to challenge themselves to be better, and how to behave when they lose and when they win. Whether kids play soccer, baseball, or football, they learn they are part of a team where one person depends on another.

When my son plays baseball, he’s not the only one who needs to play well; he depends on his defense to make the plays on the field. When my daughter plays tennis, she depends on her partner to cut off the ball at the net and win the point, and the tennis team depends on each person in order to win the overall match and become the champion. Sports also teach children to trust and respect the decisions of someone who understands how the entire team needs to work in order to succeed.

Sadly, though, youth sports have suffered from the “winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” attitude. They have become too much of a reflection of professional sports. Winning is a happy result, but the lessons from losing are even more important. When my daughter loses the tennis match, her coach reminds her that she shouldn’t lose heart and that she should learn more from losing than from winning. Losing makes you focus on improving your skills and your strategy. We’re going to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.

I believe that participating in youth sports is much more than building a sound body. Sports are the best way to shape and build more self-motivated and happier children and help them become more self-motivated and happier adults.

【1】What is the author’s attitude to youth sports?

    A.Critical.

    B.Positive.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Unclear.

【2】What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A.What sports the author’s kids play.

B.What the value of sports is.

    C.How sports benefit the kids.

D.Why the author’s kids continue to play sports.

【3】What does the underlined part in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Teenagers don’t have to win every time.

B.Winning is the only goal for teen players.

C.Teenagers should work together to succeed.

D.Winning is not the most important in sports.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Youth Sports Build Better Adults

    B.Teenagers Suffer from Youth Sports

C.Losing Brings More than Winning Does

D.Teenagers Perform Better than Adults in Sports

  • 31、Directions:Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

A drop in the sun’s radiation can cause cold winters in parts of North America and Europe, scientists say, a finding that could improve long-range forecasts and help countries 1 for storms.

Scientists have known for a long time that the sun has an 11-year cycle during which radiation from the sun reaches a(n) 2 then falls. But detecting a clear link of the cycle to the weather has proved much 3.

“Our research notices a link between solar activities and regional winter climate,” lead author Sarah Ineson of the UK Met Office told the reporters in an email.

Her team focused on the data from the recent minimum solar radiation period during 2008-10, which was a(n) 4 calm period for the sun but at the same time, 5 winters in the U.S and Europe were recorded which brought troubles to many businesses and made people’s lives difficult.

The researchers found that a reduction in radiation from the sun can affect wind patterns, 6 cold winters.

“While radiation levels won’t tell us what the day-to-day weather will be, they provide the exciting 7 of improved prediction for winter conditions for months and even years ahead. These predictions play an important role in long-term weather planning,” Ineson said.

Ineson’s team used the data in a complex computer to 8 long-term weather patterns. It successfully reproduced what scientists had observed happening in the upper atmosphere during changes in solar radiation. More study was needed, though. The key 9 in the experiment lay in the satellite data used, because it spans (跨度) only a few years.” So there are still questions concerning whether the current research results are accurate and whether they can be 10 to other solar cycles,” she said.
