二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Are you carrying too much on your back at school? I’m sure lots of children of your age will say “Yes”. Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags.

Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them.

“It’s hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it’s so heavy,” said Rick Hammond, an 11-year-old student in the US. Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps (带子) to carry them, but many other students choose rolling bags. But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags.

But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight.

Scott Bautch, a back doctor, said children under Grade 4 should stay with 10%. But it is also important that older children don’t stay with over 15%, because their bodies are still growing. “Children are losing their balance and falling down with their school bags,” he said.

Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin workbooks for students to take home.

One of the best answers is, as some children said, to have no homework at all!

1From the passage we can know that______ .

A.only children in China carry too heavy school bags

B.both children in China and the US carry too heavy school bags

C.children in other countries don’t carry too heavy bags

D.only children in the US carry too heavy school bags

2According to the doctor, Scott Bautch, if a child in Grade 5 weighs about 30 kilos, the school bag he carries should not be over ________.

    A.5 kilos B.3 kilos

    C.5.5 kilos D.4.5 kilos

3Some students think the best answer to his problems is that______ .

A.they should have a little homework to do after they get home

B.their teachers had better not ask them to do any homework

C.they should only take home library books they will read that night

D.they should use thin workbooks instead of thick ones

  • 27、There is a food-related expression involving something that most cultures have – bread. Some people like to eat their bread with eggs, while some people like to spread chocolate on top. But one of the best things to put on bread – especially if it is warm and fresh — is butter (黄油)!

Bread and butter is a popular combination, but "bread and butter" also means something almost as comforting – a way to make money. Some word experts believe that the phrase "bread and butter" began in Europe and England during the Middle Ages. At that time, many farmers could only afford bread and butter as their entire meal, or they would eat it with soup.

So, bread and butter was a basic food, which is what the expression "bread and butter" meant for many years — a basic thing for life. After you got your bread and butter, you could then buy more things for your home. Then around the 1600s, the meaning changed. People began using it to mean the way they made a living.

This is the origin. Below is how you can use it.

Let's say you really like to write and sing songs, but you do not make enough money doing those things to pay for your housing, food, and other costs. So you get a job as a website designer. If someone asks what you do, you could say, "Well, I'm a musician, but designing websites is my bread and butter."

In other words, designing websites pays your bills. Making music does not. So, you count on web design for your "bread and butter".

For some people, it is important to have a bread-and-butter job. They get nervous if their jobs are not stable, without a continuous pay check coming in. Being a doctor is a good bread-and-butter job. If you are a teacher, you could say teaching is your bread and butter.

【1】What did "bread and butter" mean in the Middle Ages?

A.The only food that people ate.

    B.Food that many farmers liked.

    C.A basic thing for life.

D.More things that people could buy.

【2】What is the meaning of the underlined sentence in the passage?

A.The musician prefers designing websites to writing and singing songs.

B.The musician makes a living by designing websites.

C.Designing websites is as comforting as eating bread and butter.

D.The musician designs websites for bread-and-butter shops.

【3】Which of the following is the closest in meaning to "stable" in the last paragraph?

    A.Regular.

    B.Exciting.

    C.Unique.

    D.Safe.

【4】What is the main idea of this passage?

A.How people in different places eat bread and butter.

B.The importance of bread and butter to people.

C.The reason why people created the saying "bread and butter".

D.The origin and usages of the phrase "bread and butter".

“My young friend,”answered the teacher,“we should never make fun of the poor. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes.

It was a long weekend in May 2018 and my partner, Gabe Rosescu, and I were taking a road trip from my home to visit friends in Nelson. We are both adventurous, and we couldn’t wait to go hiking and exploring. It was our first trip together after six months of dating.

At around 5.30 pm, we were driving on a steep (陡峭) mountain road. I was texting messages to my family and enjoying the view. We weren’t aware there had recently been flooding in the area. When I looked up from my phone, I saw a wave of mud (泥) and an huge tree quickly moving down the mountain, right in front of our car. Gabe tried to brake, but it was too late.

I looked at him and we both said, “Oh, shoot!” .The mudslide sent our car suddenly falling nearly 300 meters down a rocky cliff (悬崖) .It landed on its side among some trees.

I don’t know how long we were unconscious, but I woke up by the sound of Ga bemoaning (呻吟) .He was bending over the steering wheel and there was blood everywhere. Outside my passenger window there was a steep drop. I had broken my breast bones and my right ankle was broken. It was so painful that I couldn’t move my right foot at all. Gabe had broken his nose and cheek bones. Parts of his head were crushed (挤压) and his eyes were damaged. With the side doors and my window crushed shut, the only way out was through the driver’s side window.

We both managed to get out of the car. With no phone signal, all we could do was to scream for help. We were shocked when, after just a few minutes, we heard someone callback.
