二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、My dad doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would bake great bread, but he is and he does. Every Saturday he produces homemade bread. When he’s done, the whole house smells delicious.

The shop where Dad works doesn’t have enough work, so he’s under pressure. I think Dad bakes bread to help him relax.

Now I’ve been feeling kind of stressed out myself since I found out I didn’t make the school swim team. I think Dad knew I was feeling bad. Last Saturday he asked me how things were going. I said OK, even though I didn’t feel OK at all. He looked at me for a moment, and then he said it was time for me to help. Then he headed to the kitchen.

I followed right behind him. Once we were there, Dad took out his big mixing bowl, handed me a large wooden spoon, and told me to mix while he added the ingredients (烹饪原料). Dad isn’t big on measuring, but he knows how much of each ingredient to use, and the bread always turns out great.

Dad showed me how to knead the dough (揉面团). Next came the most difficult part — doing nothing. We put the dough back into the bowl and then we waited for more than an hour for the dough to slowly rise and double in size. Next, we divided it into two and waited for it to rise again.

Dad said the waiting is always the hardest part. “It’s hard to resist (抵制) putting the dough directly into the oven (烤箱), but if you do, the bread will be hard. The most important lesson of all is learning to be patient.” Dad taught me more than how to bake bread.

【1】What can we learn about the author’s father?

A.He is living a relaxing life.

D.He is more like a baker than a worker.

【2】Why is the author feeling stressed?

    A.School isn’t going well.

    B.She dislikes making bread.

C.She feels sorry for her father.

    D.Some classes aren’t worth it.

【3】What do the underlined part “Dad isn’t big on measuring” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Dad is skilled at measuring.

    B.Dad dislikes measuring.

    C.Dad is crazy for measuring.

    D.Dad is careless about measuring.

【4】What lesson has the author learned from her dad?

    A.Never give up.

    B.Enjoy time with family.

    C.Believe in yourself.

    D.Take life easily.

  • 27、Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most famous and enduring children’s classics.

The book begins with young Alice catches sight of a small white figure, a rabbit dressed in a waistcoat and holding a pocket watch, murmuring (喃喃细语) to himself that he is late. She runs after the rabbit and follows it into a hole. After falling into the depths of the earth, she finds herself in a corridor full of doors. At the end of the corridor, there is a tiny door with tiny key through which Alice can see a beautiful garden that she is desperate to enter. She then sees a bottle labeled “Drink me”, which she does, and begins to shrink until she is small enough to fit through the door.

Unfortunately, she has left the key that fits the lock on a table, now well out of her reach. She then finds a cake labeled “Eat me”, which again she does, and is restored to her normal size. Disconcerted by this frustrating series of events, Alice begins to cry, and as she does, she shrinks and is washed away in her own tears.

This strange beginning leads to a series of progressively “curiouser and curiouser” events, which see Alice babysit a pig, take part in a tea party, and take part in a game of croquet (槌球). She meets some incredible characters. She also, famously, meets the Queen of Hearts who has a special liking for execution (处决).

The book reaches its climax (高潮) in the trial of the Knave of Hearts, who is charged with stealing the Queen’s pies. A good deal of nonsense evidence is given against the unfortunate man, and a letter is produced which only refers to events by pronouns. Alice, who by now has grown to a great size, support the Knave but the Queen demands her execution. As she is fighting off the Queen’s soldiers, Alice awakes, realizing she has been dreaming all along.

The book is brilliant for children, but with enough joy for life in it to please adults too.

【1】Which of the following statements about the beginning is TRUE?

A.The rabbit follows Alice quietly into a hole.

B.Alice’s sister is reading a book in the garden.

C.The beautiful corridor is full of windows and doors.

D.Alice drinks a bottle of liquid and starts to become smaller.

【2】The underlined word “disconcerted” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

    A.annoyed and distracted

    B.puzzled and frightened

    C.amazed and excited

    D.persuaded and encouraged

【3】What can be inferred from the climax of the book?

A.Alice is courageous enough to be in favor of the Knave.

B.The Queen is so kind as to free the Knave.

C.The Knave is charged in a letter which details his crimes.

D.The soldiers are still fighting with Alice after she awakes.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The unbelievable characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

B.The mysterious settings of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

C.The attractive plot of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

D.The readers of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

  • 28、   New York girl Anastasia Pagonis was 14 when she lost her sight within 2 months. After fighting anxiety and depression from losing her eyesight, Anastasia Pagonis found joy in competitive swimming again with a little help from man’s best friend.

“Being a teenage girl is hard, so having that on top of it was just such a struggle for me,” Pagonis said. “It took me about eight months to return to the normal state, and then I got it in my head, ‘Okay, I’m blind. Now what am I going to do with my life?’”

Swimming was the answer. Pagonis had taken lip swimming just 6 months before losing her eyesight but knew it was her “happy place”.

  • 29、I am a part of the Windward Robotics team known as the Omnicats, one of the many clubs offered at my school, My eight teammates and I started out by watching the robotics qualifiers (资格赛) and finals of Chinese teams. We used these robotics videos for inspiration and drew up mind maps of what our team wanted to do.

We meet every day for two hours after school in order to build our robots. Typically, adults oversee what students are building, but my school lets teens take control. It leaves room for more errors, but we’re prouder of our final product.

Before our first real match, a practice one was offered at the actual site. My sub-team had been further along than other teams but quickly fell behind,’ When that big day arrived, I immediately felt my teammates’ nervousness. Our first match was in three minutes. All of us glanced around at each other, anxious and nervous. Our robot was still sitting in a box. Two of our teammates rushed to take the robot for an official examination as the rest of us discussed our strategy.

Our team captain explained that we all should try driving the robot now, while it was early in the season. She gave me the remote. I had only driven for a limited amount of time in practice so I was extremely nervous. Our autonomous code (自动代码) began to run almost immediately after our short discussion. Despite all the drama, we ended up winning the match. Not too bad for the first match! I was so proud. I did not enjoy the pressure of driving but liked building the, robot behind the scenes instead.

We have transferred to a different type of robotics at the end of the season, which involves the whole team designing one giant robot with large tools. I am a part of the electrical team now, so I make sure the motherboard (母板) can supply the robot’s energy needs. We have all enjoyed the rest of the season and learned that robotics is never dull!

  • 31、Recitation

In western cultures, 1 eye contact in conversation is necessary. As a matter of fact, a westerner might consider a lack of eye contact as a lack of interest. In Spain, Italy and Greece, where people stand close together talking to each other, eye contact is more frequent and lasts longer.

In many Asian cultures, people avoid eye contact to show respect. It is done when talking with anyone in 2 or with anyone older.

Habits like this can cause problems when people do not understand them. For example, an Asian person might close his or her eyes in 3 or look down while listening to a speaker. A Western speaker might thing the person is not interested.

Eye contact is a 4 thing. A lack of eye contact may be considered impolite. But if you stare at others, it is also considered rude and should be avoided.

Our friendship can be traced back to our college days when I first met Rishi. We had our own share of first impression about each other. Mine was—she’s a lovely and charming personality. Hers was—I look like an arrogant (傲慢的) personality. I don’t blame her for this. Many of my close friends had the same view when they first met me. Blame it on me being a shy person to some extent.

We became really close within a short period of time. Ours was a group of four people divided into 2 each during our final year when we both chose advertising as our specialisation and the other two journalism. Back then, I was a regular user of BBM Messenger and hardly used WhatsApp.

On one specific occasion, we had really bad argument about a failed project. The usual blame game was on. We decided to put it past us and focus on our studies. During this time, she once handed me her phone to show me a picture. While I was going through that, I came across a message from a particular WhatsApp group that comprises of her and my other two friends. I asked her permission to view the group. She had a blank expression on her face. But she allowed me to go ahead.

I was in shock while going through their messages. Not really positive things were said about me in particular. It shook me. Because these were the people I considered my friends. I broke down in front of her. She apologised. But I felt cheated on. I told her about my decision of not wanting to continue this friendship further. We both missed each other. But neither of us wanted to give the last try.
