  • 27、The earthy, caffeine-infused coffee drink may hold more power than waking you up in the morning. Drinking either sweetened or unsweetened coffee is associated with a lower death risk compared with not drinking the beverage, according to a new study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Researchers surveyed 171,616 participants in the United Kingdom up to five times over the course of a year about their lifestyle, including their coffee-drinking habits. The scientists then looked up death certificates to see who had passed away an average of seven years later. The participants ranged in age from 37 to 73 years old and reported they had no cancer at the time of the survey.

Results showed that for people who drank a moderate amount of coffee, defined as 1.5 to 3.5 cups a day, those who sweetened their coffee had about a 30% lower death risk compared with non-coffee drinkers, according to Dr. Christina Wee, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Unsweetened coffee drinkers had between 16% and 29% lower death risk compared with non-coffee drinkers.

The findings were adjusted for lifestyle and clinical factors to get rid of their effects on the results. For example, the research team asked questions about smoking level, amount of physical activity, education level and dietary habits. There is a limit to the researchers’ adjustments because they didn’t ask about other factors that could affect the results like income level and jobs.

“Based on this study, clinicians can tell their patients that there is no need for most coffee drinkers to get rid of the beverage from their diet,” lead study author Dr. Dan Liu said in an email.

Research in the past has shown that coffee intake could protect the heart and aid in treating other diseases, Liu said. It may also reduce the risk of liver problems, a 2021 study said. Coffee also has different health profiles, depending on how it’s produced, said Gunter Kuhnle, professor of nutrition and food science at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom in 2020.

【1】Why does the author mention “they had no cancer” in Paragraph 2?

A.To explain why there is a lower death risk.

B.To analyze the reasons for their health.

C.To stress that the study is believable.

D.To speak volumes about the disease.

【2】Which of the following factors is ignored during the study?

    A.Career.

    B.Education.

    C.Smoking.

    D.Exercise.

【3】What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?

A.The further explanation of the results.

B.Links between coffee and heart disease.

    C.Findings of previous researches.

D.The importance of the recent research.

【4】What does the passage mainly suggest?

    A.Unsweetened coffee counts much.

B.Coffee intake is to be advocated.

    C.Heart diseases can be cured.

    D.Coffee enjoys great popularity.

  • 28、Social distancing, as smart as it maybe to stop COVID-19 spreading, has cost us a lot during the past year. Luckily, we’re resilient (能复原的). It’s time, finally, for a great, big hug.

“Hugs area really powerful way of reminding people that they’re cared about,” says professor Michael Murphy at Texas Tech University. “When we’re born, we’re placed in our mother’s arms almost immediately. In that first year of our life, we spend a lot of time being held by other people. And as we grow up, we seek out hugs and touches as a way of connection. I think what has been lost in this past year are these really easy opportunities to be reminded of connection.”

Murphy was the lead author of a hug-centered 2018 article. In a series of interviews with adults, the researchers found that receiving a hug is connected with the reduction of negative mood that occurs on days with interpersonal conflict (冲突).

Other papers have found similarly that hugs aren’t just reserved for simple social greetings. Hugs and other forms of physical touch can change a person’s moods and offer emotional support. A 2006 study showed that simply holding hands with each other helped calm the brain’s reactions to the possible threat.

Researchers still have plenty of questions about how hugs work: Are all hugs alike? How do different cultures around the worldview the worth of hugging? The answers may not be clear yet. But for now, it’s time to get back to a good hug. “There are many people who have been fully vaccinated (接种疫苗的). They are enjoying their hugs with their friends and family members who are also vaccinated,” Murphy says. “I think there’s a lot of thirst there.”

【1】What could physical touch serve as in the 2006 study?

    A.Negative reactions.

    B.Social greetings.

    C.Emotional support.

    D.Potential threat.

【2】What do the papers and research mentioned in the text try to show?

    A.Our strong wish for hugging.

B.The power of hugging and touch.

    C.Our physical reactions to hugging.

D.The different forms of physical touch.

【3】What can we know from the passage?

    A.All hugs are alike.

    B.Hugs can hardly change a person’s moods.

C.All the citizens have been fully vaccinated.

D.Researchers are still uncertain about how hugs work.

【4】Which of the following would Murphy agree with?

A.Hugs are the most common form of touch.

B.Hugs cannot be stopped by social distancing.

C.Hugs can reduce negative influences of personal conflicts.

D.Hugs are of greater importance to children than to adults.

  • 29、The landscape of parents staying at home is changing, challenging old ideas about who takes care of the children. While moms usually did this in the past, a recent study by Pew Research Center shows more dads are staying at home. Over the last 30 years, the number of dads staying at home has gone up from 11% in 1989 to 18% in 2021.

Economics is the most significant part of this change. As women do better in school — with 53.1% of adults with a bachelor’s degree being women and get better jobs, families are thinking about different ways to share responsibilities. Women are getting better paying jobs, like in medicine and law, making some families decide that having the dad at home and the mom as the main earner is the best choice. Chris Braaten from California knew his wife, with a higher degree, could earn more, so he happily stayed at home.

The wish for one parent to stay at home often matches what both partners want. Many dads, not happy with their jobs, find more joy in taking care of their children. Spending meaningful time with family and feeling satisfied often matter more than staying in the workforce.

The high cost of childcare is also making parents think differently. Childcare can be very expensive, ranging from $4,810 to over $15,000 per child each year. This leads some families to consider new ways, like having the dad stay home, to handle these costs.

Cannon Ingalls and Jeff Carlson show this too. Ingalls, moving from Missouri to Minneapolis, chose his wife’s better-paying job over his own. Carlson in Colorado found that most of his salary was going to childcare, so he decided to stay at home to avoid money stress.

As the idea of parents staying at home continues to change, economic factors, along with new thoughts about gender (性别) roles and a wish for more meaningful family time, are making more dads choose to stay at home.

【1】How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed?

A.By sharing stories of dads staying at home.

B.By presenting data over the past three decades.

C.By comparing the income of different families.

D.By stressing the benefits of women’s education.

【2】What mainly contributes to more stay-at-home dads?

    A.Social expectations in today’s society.

B.Fathers being dissatisfied with their jobs.

    C.Changing preferences in family structures.

D.Changes in women’s education and economic roles.

【3】Why are Chris Braaten and Cannon Ingalls mentioned in the text?

    A.To serve as typical examples.

    B.To show their close relationship.

    C.To show their different personalities.

    D.To provide some background information.

【4】What is a suitable title for the text?

A.The Decline of Traditional Gender Roles

B.The Growing Trend of Stay-at-Home Dads

C.The Challenges Faced by Working Mothers

D.The Effects of Traditional Parenting Methods

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Animated movies use drawings instead of real people. Artists must draw thousands of pictures and each picture must be a little different. For example, if the movie-maker wants to show a girl running, the artist must draw her feet in different places in each picture. When the pictures are shown very quickly, one after the other, it looks like the girl is running. Walt Disney was not the first or only person to use animation in movies, but he is the most renowned. His first Mickey Mouse cartoon, produced in 1927, was called Plane Crazy. This was a short, silent movie about the adventures of a little mouse.

Many people in the movie business thought that animation was only appropriate for short cartoons. Disney did not agree with them. He believed that he could tell any kind of story using animation. His first long movie was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney spent all his money making this movie. Fortunately, it was a great success. He made Pinocchio next and then Dumbo (about a baby elephant), and he didn’t look back after this.

When we think of Disney, however, we don’t only think of movies, we also think of Disneyland. There are Disneylands in Japan, the United States of America and France. They are large parks where people can meet Disney’s characters and visit scenes from his movies.

Although Walt Disney made many of the famous movies many years ago, they are as popular now as they were when he made them. Today we can buy them on video and see them in movie theatres from time to time. When Walt Disney began making his animated cartoons all those years ago, people drew all the pictures by hand. Nowadays computers do much of his work.
