二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Why do animals migrate or move? They do so to find a place that will offer better living conditions. Not all animals migrate, but those that migrate are attempting to help the survival of their species. There are a variety of reasons why animals leave. Some migrate to avoid weather changes. Some leave because of the food supply. Unlike humans who migrate because of relationships, job changes, or other social reasons, animals migrate to survive.

There are different types of migration, but one of the most interesting is the seasonal migration. In seasonal migrations, animals move twice a year. These movements usually occur due to changes in the seasons or in the weather. For example, some birds migrate away from colder regions to warmer weather and then come back to a place once the colder weather has passed.

How do animals know when it is time to migrate? Some animals do not leave an are until the environment changes and becomes a place that is not favorable for them to live. Other animals seem to have inborn systems that tell them when it is time to leave.

Animals that migrate use many different ways to successfully reach their destinations. Scientists believe animals’ senses play a huge role in helping them find their way. For example, salmon(三文鱼)are thought to recognize specific smells that help them. Others are thought to use even the sun, moon, and stars to help guide them on their journeys. Although the animals use different methods to migrate, one thing is the same: migration remains an important journey for the survival of many of Earth’s most amazing species.

A.Animals use the same method to migrate.

B.Animals may migrate for different reasons.

C.Animals are born to know where to migrate.

D.All migrating animals use the sun as a guide.

【4】Where is the text probably taken from?

    A.A history book.

    B.A travel brochure.

    C.A science magazine.

  • 27、A severe drought (干旱) has caused water levels in Southeast Asia's Mekong River to drop to their lowest in more than 100 years. It may have harmful effects on fish, as well as the tens of millions of people living and working along the river, experts warn.

This year, the dry conditions in the Mekong region happened due to warm Pacific Ocean-currents (洋流) known as the El Nino effect. But climate change is also a driving factor, experts say, causing the monsoon (季风) season to shorten sharply. The situation was made worse by water dam operators upstream, withholding water for their own purposes.

Many rice farmers in the area have been unable to plant their main crop, raising fears of a heavily decreased harvest this fall. Less water flow could also have a bad influence on fish reproduction in the Mekong River basin. This is normally the time when fish use rising water levels to reproduce their young, but there is little sign of this happening so far this year.

Perhaps even more alarming, experts expect that droughts and damage to the water flow of the Mekong will become more common, and they warn that it could eventually destroy the entire ecosystem.

Starting from the Tibetan highlands, the Mekong River flows through six Asian countries, including China, Myanmar, Thaland, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, before emptying into the South China Sea. The river basin is home to the largest inland fishery in the world and more than 60 million people depend on it to make a living.

Few rivers in the world rise and fall with the seasons as much as the Mekong, which can drop up to 40 feet in some places at the end of the dry season. When the monsoon rains arrive, they normally produce a flood that brings with it sediments (沉积物) to agriculture as well as enormous amounts of larvae (幼虫) and tiny fish, including many endangered species, such as the Mekong giant catfish, that are swept into the Tonle Sap Lake where they can grow.

【1】How many reasons are there for the drought of Mekong River this year?

    A.One

    B.Two

    C.Three

    D.Four

【2】What can we know from the passage?

A.Droughts are likely to happen more frequently in the future.

C.The Mekong River starts from the Tibetan highlands and ends in the Tonle Sap Lake.

D.The harvest of fish in the river hasn't been greatly affected because of the droughts.

【3】What's the attitude of experts to water flow of Mekong River in future?

    A.Positive

    B.Unconcerned

    C.Worried.

    D.Negative

  • 28、Vietnam aims to solve the relations between economic development and cultural preservation. Vietnamese cultural departments and activists have tried to preserve the historical and cultural relics in the country.

Vietnam now has more than 40,000 historical relics. These relics of various forms and history are treasures for future generations.

However, hundreds of relics are severely damaged due to the negative influence of time, war and human activities. Head of Hanoi Relics Management Board, Nguyen Doan Tuan, says rescue work must preserve the relics’ soul: “We cannot replace ruined construction with new materials. We must preserve its shape, size and style. We need to pay attention to every brick replaced so that it looks exactly like the original.”

Most relics have to rely on tourist fees for repair and rescue work. Director of Van Mieu Cultural and Science Center, Dang Kim Ngoc, says that the relics must be promoted widely to attract more visitors and bring in more income for repair and preservation: “We provide constant guide services for visitors so that they understand more about our relics. At the same time, a natural surrounding of the relic has been ensured, including the grass field and garden to improve its scenic value.”

The local government agreed that the relics must be turned to the community for shared efforts in the preservation work. Director of Vietnam Revolution Museum Dang QuocQuan, said that the community must be guided in the preservation and protection, “The UNESCO aims to let local community take part in the preservation of relics. We have seen limitations in the preservation of relics, especially festival-related groups of buildings. This requires management and guidance by the government.”

Nguyen Thi Minh Ly from the Department of Heritage says the community should be guided in proper behaviors towards relics: “This will ensure the protection of cultural relics in later generations. Creative restoration (修复) must be based on previous (先前的) values.”

Experts have called for a systematic (系统的) guidance by the state in local level preservation while promoting creative thinking in restoration for each relic.

  • 29、The new high-speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.

The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for Spring Festival.

"For the first time, I feel home is not that far away after all," said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high-speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family.

The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago, and he has now settled in Urumqi.

The 1,776-km line, which passes through Qinghai province and is the country's first high-speed railway to be built in a high-altitude region, came into service on Dec 26.

"We normally drive home for Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season," Liang said. "Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes, so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.

More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high-speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.

The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang's development. All passenger trains will gradually shift to the new link, leaving the old one to be used for goods. As a result, Xinjiang's annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons from the current 70 million.

The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the deserted Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the bone-dry sands of the Gobi Desert.

The project could help China to promote its high-speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xizhang, director of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway project's management department in Xinjiang.

1How long did it take to go from Urumqi to Lanzhou by the usual train before?

    A. about 12 hours.   B. About 6 hours.

    C. About 18 hours.   D. About 24 hours.

2What’s the main advantage of the new high-speed railway?

    A. It takes more time to go to Urumqi to Lanzhou.

    B. It will be more convenient for people all over the country to Xinjiang.

    C. All the people in Lanzhou can return home on festivals.

    D. It helps to improve Xinjiang’s development.

3From the passage we can learn _______.

    A. Xinjiang’s annual goods ability can increase nearly four times

    B. the new railway technology may help more railway lines to be built abroad

    C. the high-speed railway lines can’t be built across the bone-dry sands

    D. the old railway lines can only carry goods now

4Which of the following is true according to the passage?

    A. The new high-speed railway line is good for all people to go home.

    B. The new high-speed railway line benefits businessmen to carry goods.

    C. Taking the new train is safer than driving home from Urumqi to Lanzhou.

    D. Businessmen seldom went home for Spring Festival before.
