26、 Tech giants Apple and Google are teaming up to create a system that would let smartphone users know when they’ve come into contact with someone who has COVID-19.
The technology would rely on the Bluetooth signals that smartphones can both send out and receive. If a person tests positive for COVID-19, they could inform public health authorities through an app. Those public health apps would then warn anyone whose smartphones had come near the infected person’s phone within 14 days.
The technology could be used on both Google Android phones and Apple iPhones. The companies insist that they will preserve smartphone users’ privacy. Smartphone users must choose to use it independently. The software will not collect data on users’ physical locations or their personally identifiable information. People who test positive would remain anonymous(匿名的), both to the people who came in contact with them and to Apple and Google.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has warned that using cellphone data to address the pandemic(流行病) may carry risks of “invasions of privacy, abuse of information, and stigmatization(污名化)”.
An adviser from ACLU, Jennifer Granick said that the joint Apple and Google project “appears to mitigate the worst privacy and concentration risks, but there is still room for improvement.” She added that contact tracking apps should be “voluntary and used only for public health purposes and only for the period of this pandemic.”
Google and Apple say their technology will be used only by public health authorities to track the spread of COVID-19.
A team at MIT also has been working on a contact-tracking system that similarly uses Bluetooth signals to identify when people have come near each other.
Apple and Google are carrying out their contact-tracking technology in two steps. In mid-May, they will release(发布) software that will let public health authorities build apps that exchange information via Bluetooth. In the coming months, they will update their operating systems so phones can share information without having to install an app.

27、A 17-year-old pilot (飞行员) has become the youngest person to fly alone around the world. Mack Rutherford, who holds British and Belgian citizenship, completed his trip on Wednesday. He landed his small plane in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia. That is also where he started his trip five months ago. Rutherford, who turned 17 during his trip, broke the Guinness World Record for youngest male to fly around the world. That record had been held by Travis Ludlow of Britain. Ludlow was 18 when he made his flight around the world last year.
Rutherford was born into a family of flyers. He earned his pilot’s License (许可证) in 2020, becoming the youngest pilot in the world at the age of 15.
His trip around the world started in Sofia on a plane owned by the internet company ICD Soft. The ultralight plane, called Shark, can travel at the speed of 300 kilometers per hour. Normally a two-seater, the plane was changed for his long trip by replacing the second seat with an extra fuel (燃料) container.
Rutherford first planned to make the trip in three months. But it lasted longer because of rainstorms, sandstorms and extreme heat. Most of the delays were caused by waits to get permits and other documents required for keeping with the flight plan. The flight took him through Africa and the Calf area to India, China, South Korea, and Japan. He crossed the northern Pacific and landed after 10 straight hours in the air on a volcanic island near the Bering Strait. From there, he headed to Alaska and down the West Coast of the United States to Mexico. Then he headed north again along the U. S. East Coast to Canada, and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe.
His sister, Zara, said she kept in close touch with her younger brother during his flight.
On Wednesday, a huge crowd of people welcomed Rutherford and celebrated his achievements. His father, Sam Rutherford, said he was extremely happy and proud of his children’s achievements. He told reporters that such an event helps show other children they should follow their dreams.

28、Driving in Canada is similar to driving in many parts of the United States. Distances and speeds, however, are posted in kilometers per hour and some signs, particularly in Quebec, may only be in French.
Unless otherwise posted, the maximum (最大限度的) speed limit in Canada is 50km/hr in cities and 80km/hr on highways. On rural highways, the posted speed limit may be 100km/hr. It is illegal to take automobile radar detectors (汽车雷达检测器) into Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and the Yukon. Seat belt use is required by law for all passengers, and child car seats must be used by children under 40 pounds. Some provinces require drivers to keep their vehicles’ headlights on during the day and some have banned (禁止) driving while using a hand-held cell phone. Motorcycles cannot share a lane (车道), and safety helmets for motorcycle riders and passengers are necessary. Running a red light is a serious crime throughout Canada and drivers are advised to stop before starting when a light turns green.
Winter travel can be dangerous due to heavy snowfalls and icy conditions. Some roads and bridges are often closed in winter. Snow tires are required in some provinces. Travelers should also be careful about animals while driving at night in rural areas.
Highway 401, from Detroit to Montreal, is one of the busiest highways in North America. It has been the scene of many deadly traffic accidents due to sudden and severe weather changes, high rates of speed, and heavy truck traffic. Thus drivers should be alert while travelling here.
Please refer to our Road Safety page for more information. Also, we suggest that you visit the website of Canada’s national authority responsible for road safety.

29、 Over the past few months, people in the United States have been watching some unusual television advertisements (广告). They are unusual because they advertise a product that no American uses now or is likely to use in the future.
The advertisements show that a product called golden rice will help prevent blindness in millions of children.
None of these children live in the United States. They live in countries where white rice forms the main part of the diet. Too much white rice without other food causes lack of vitamin A. This can lead to blindness.
Golden rice has been developed to solve this problem through genetic (基因的) engineering. As well as TV advertisements, most news media carried stories on this great scientific development that would help some of the poorest children in the world.
It could also save the science of genetic engineering. People in Europe and America have learned more about genetically modified (转基因的) food over the past few years. And the more they learn, the less they like what they hear. People like science. And people like to eat food. But they would like the two things kept separate.
The truth is that a child would have to eat 9 kilograms of golden rice every day to get enough vitamin A. And Gordon Conway of the Rockefeller Foundation, which helped the development of golden rice, says that the advertisements have gone too far.
Perhaps the main purpose of golden rice is to get people to accept genetically modified food. The TV advertisements sent a very clear message—if you don’t accept this technology then poor children will go blind. It cost US $ 50 million to get that message across. That would buy a lot of food for poor children.
What do the people who are said to benefit from golden rice think of being part of this great scientific and social argument? Nobody knows. Nobody has asked them.
【1】Why do you think children in the USA need no golden rice?
A.They don’t need vitamin A. B.They have all kinds of food.
C.It is genetically modified food. D.There isn’t enough vitamin A in it.
【2】What is the main reason why golden rice is advertised in the USA?
A.Golden rice will prevent blindness in children.
B.Golden rice is the first genetically modified food.
C.People know little about genetically modified food.
D.People have not accepted genetically modified food.
【3】According to the text, what kind of food do people in Europe and America like best?
A.Food that is rich in vitamin A.
B.Food produced in poor countries.
C.Food produced with no help from science.
D.Food produced through genetic engineering.
【4】What is the author’s opinion of the TV advertisements?
A.They are believable. B.They need improvement.
C.They are not telling the truth. D.They are put in a wrong place.

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After spending far too much time on apps and social media over the last few years, I decided it was time for a change. I'd started to get really frustrated with how I was spending my spare time. One day, when I realized I'd checked my phone over 100 times, I knew something had to give.
So, I deleted my social media apps from my phone and made a promise to myself to do something more positive with my time.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I'd stopped reading as much over the last couple of years. At first, it wasn't easy for me to find things to do. But then a friend sent a magazine Readly to me. I'd always loved reading magazines and thought it was time to give them a go again.
The selection of Readly is amazing: food, fitness, lifestyle, sports, culture and hobbies are all covered. I've been reading it in the evenings to relax instead of watching TV. I've also found it great for inspiration and ideas for new recipes(食谱)in the food section. I have been on a diet to lose some weight, so the fitness section has been really helpful, too. Having so many meaningful things to read is just fantastic. I can't think how much I would have had to spend to get all that content.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I've also shared Readly with my husband who loves sports section.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My daughter has many hobbies and she is very interested in reading Readly too.
