二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   What are charter (特许) schools? How are they different from traditional public schools in the United States?

Charter schools are a kind of public schools that receive a special charter or written rules, from a state government. The American state of Minnesota passed the country’s first charter school law in the early 1990s. Since then, charter schools have spread from coast to coast. There are more than 6,700 charter schools now, educating nearly 3 million students nationwide. Charter schools cannot require students to pay tuition for their education. The schools also cannot set admission requirements. If too many young people asked to be admitted, the school must choose its students through a lottery (抽签) system.

Charter schools are different from public schools in many ways. They often have flexibility in the kinds of classes and programs that they can offer. They often do not have to follow the rules public schools do. The charter school movement grew out of unhappiness with public schools.

Over time, different groups began backing the charter cause. Civil rights groups wanted schools that broke down barriers based on race or wealth. Parents wanted greater ability to choose where their children went to school. Some Americans said that competition between schools could improve the quality of education. The main idea was that increased flexibility in an education program would let charter schools better serve their students.

But not all Americans like charter schools. For over 20 years, critics (评论家) have argued that charter schools take money away from public schools, and may not serve students with special needs. Some civil rights groups have opposed charter schools. Some labor and union organizers disagree about whether charter schools are actually public schools.

  • 28、Over 30 years ago, a book titled “The Alchemist” was published. The author of this book was a man named Paulo Coelho, and he was told by the first bookseller to carry his book, that only one person bought a copy after it was published. Though it was bad to hear about the shocking results, Coelho remained confident in his work.

He waited for better results to appear, but they were slow to come. Six months had passed before the next copy was sold. Strangely, the person who bought his first book was the same person who bought the second.

After that first year, the publisher decided that the book was a flop and ended Coelho’s contract. Fortunately, though, Coelho shrugged off that defeat. He made up his mind not to give in, and so he doubled down to pursue his dream with even more efforts by finding another publisher. Now finding this new publisher was no easy task for Coelho, as he was met with rejection after rejection. But, after many repeated rejections, he finally landed that new publisher, and with it, another opportunity to achieve his dream.

From that point forward, Coelho’s dreams started to come true. At first, he only sold three thousand books. But the sales kept trickling in, and as time went by, he would sell ten thousand. and then 100 thousand, Coelho’s luck has yet to run out, as his book sales continue to grow year over year, with now over 150 million and counting copies of “The Alchemist” having been sold. Even more astonishing is the fact that he sold over 320 million books including all of his other works. But it all started with that first book!

【1】What can we infer about “The Alchemist” in the first paragraph?

A.It is a book containing an unexpected ending.

B.It inspired Paulo Coelho’s passion for writing.

C.Almost no one noticed it after it was published.

D.It is based on Paulo Coelho’s own life experience.

【2】What does the underlined word “flop” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Lesson.

    B.Reward.

    C.Chance.

    D.Failure.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Paulo Coelho?

    A.Self-centred.

    B.Determined.

    C.Creative.

    D.Tricky.

【4】What does the author want to tell us through the text?

A.Be supportive to others who are in need.

B.Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.

C.Books and friends should be few but good.

D.Don’t judge a book on the basis of its cover.

  • 29、Over the years, Brian Wansink, director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, has studied such things as how far Americans typically drive to buy food, how many times we refill our plates at all-you-can-eat buffets and how we organize our kitchens. In the mid-2000s he famously coined the phrase “mindless eating”(and wrote a book by that name) to focus attention on all the bad dietary decisions we make without really thinking about them.

His new book, Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life, aims to change the design of restaurants, school lunchrooms, office cafeterias and homes so that the mindless choices we make will be more healthful ones. Some examples:

Keep kitchen counters clear. No visible snack food, no bread, no nuts — not even breakfast cereal. In Wansink’s research, “women who had even one box of breakfast cereal that was visible — anywhere in their kitchen — weighed 21 pounds more than their neighbor who didn’t.”

Trick yourself into drinking less wine. “We tend to focus on the height of what we pour and not the width, so we pour 12 percent less wine into taller wineglasses than we pour into wider wineglasses.” And the shape of the glass is not the only variable that affects how much we drink. Wansink writes: “Because red wine is easier to see than white wine, we pour 9 percent less red wine whenever we pour a glass.”

Wansink said his researchers also found that people ate less at restaurants when sat in well-lighted areas near windows and doors, than in darker areas or in the back. They ate less if they were offered a doggie bag, or to-go box, before they got their meals: apparently the idea of getting a “free” second meal outweighed the impulse (冲动) to clean their plates. Workers who frequently ate at their desks weighed 15.4 pounds less, on average, than those who didn’t. Fruits and vegetables kept on the top shelf of the refrigerator were eaten at higher rates than those on lower shelves.

The point, Wansink says, is to consider findings like those and change your environment or habits. Then you won’t have to think about it: You’ll just eat less.

1Why did Brian Wansink write Slim by Design: Mindless eating Solutions for Everyday Life?

    A. Because he wanted people to become thin.

    B. Because he wished to change the design of dining places.

    C. Because he hoped to coin a new phrase “mindless eating”.

    D. Because he intended to help people make more healthful dietary decision.

2According to Wansink, which of the following affects the amount of wine we drink ____.

    A. the shape of wineglasses   B. the color of wineglasses

    C. the taste of wine   D. the quality of wine

3The underlined phrase a “doggie bag” in paragraph 5 probably means ____.

    A. a bag for carrying dogs   B. a box for takeaway food

    C. a container for leftovers   D. a bag for carrying dog food

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. Changing environment or habits of eating will help you eat less.

    B. Eating fruits and vegetables is better for your health.

    C. Keeping your kitchen counter clear of any food will help make you thin.

    D. Many people eat or drink too much without paying attention to it.
