26、The Bermuda Triangle is an area in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, near Florida in the USA, where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared mysteriously.
① The earliest suggestion of unusual disappearances in the Bermuda area appeared in a September 17, 1950 article. Two years later, Fatemagazine published “Sea Mystery at Our Back Door”, covering the loss of several planes and ships, including the loss of Fight 19. Flight 19 alone would be covered again in the April 1962 issue of American Legion magazine. In it, author Allan W. Eckert wrote that the flight leader had been heard saying, “We are entering white water. Nothing seems right. We don’t know where we are.” In the February 1964, the article “The Deadly Bermuda Triangle” argued that Flight 19 and other disappearances were just part of strange events in the area.
② Triangle writers have used a number of supernatural ideas to explain the events. One explanation refers to leftover technology from the mysterious lost continent of Atlantis. Some of the Triangle writers related the events to UFOs. This idea was used by Steven Spielberg for his science fiction filmClose Encounters of the Third Kind, in which the lost Flight 19 aircrews were taken by aliens.
③ But there are also some explanation relating to nature. One of them for some of the disappearances has focused on large fields of a type of natural gas on the continental shelves. Laboratory experiments carried out in Australia have proven that bubbles can sink a large ship by decreasing the density(密度)of the water; any remains rising to the surface would quickly disappear due to the Gulf Stream. It has been assumed that the eruption of volcanoes(火山)may produce large areas of bubbles so that water is no longer able to provide enough supporting power for ships. If this were the case, such an area forming around a ship could cause it to sink very rapidly and without any warning.
④ Violent weather is likely to be another reason. Powerful storms forming in tropical(热带的)waters have caused thousands of deaths and caused billions of dollars in damage. These storms have in the past caused a number of incidents related to the Triangle.

27、Have you ever always wanted to lie in bed and do totally nothing else, and just stay lazy and not worry about any of your responsibilities? We all feel lazy and uninspired from time to time. 【1】 Actually, it’s normal (正常的) to feel like that! But take care that you are probably suffering from depression (抑郁症) more than just laziness. Here are some warning signs of depression.
【2】 You may usually get in a sense of laziness when you’re overly stressed or if you’ve been working too hard for too long. And there are a lot of tips you can use to deal with it, like making a to-do list, listening to inspiring talks, or setting achievable goals. But when it’s depression, it’s of course not something you can just shake off or get out of easily, no matter what other people tell you.
You can’t cheer yourself up. Do you often struggle with feelings of unexplained loneliness, sadness, and hopelessness? Do you feel tired all the time and hardly have any energy? 【3】 You’d better have a self-check and decide if it is a serious medical illness.
You’ve lost interest in everything once you enjoyed. 【4】 So if you’ve found that your laziness has made you lose interest or pleasure in everything, including school and work, then it is certain that something is seriously wrong with your mental (心理的) health.

28、It was a comfortable sunny Sunday. I was going to meet an old university friend I hadn’t seen for years, and was really excited.
My train was running a little late, but that was no big problem—I could text him to say I would be delayed. He would understand. But … where was my mobile phone? I had that familiar sinking feeling. Yes, I’d left it at home.
No mobile phone. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling anxious, on edge and worried when I don’t have my phone with me. In fact, I know I’m not alone: two-thirds of us experience “nomophobia (无手机恐惧症)”, the fear of being out of mobile phone contact.
That’s according to a study from 2012 which surveyed 1,000 people in the UK about their relationship with mobile phones.
It says we check our mobile phones 34 times a day, and that 18—24-year-olds, especially girls, are the most likely to suffer fear of being without their mobiles: 77% of them say they are unable to be apart from their phones for more than a few minutes.
Do you have nomophobia?
● You never turn your phone off.
● You frequently check for texts, missed calls and emails.
● You always take your phone to the bathroom with you.
● You never let the battery run out.
It’s funny to think that around 20 years ago the only people with mobile phones would be businessmen carrying their large, plastic “bricks”. Of course, these days, mobile phones are everywhere. A UN study from this year said there would be more mobile phones than people across the world by the end of 2020.
And when there are more phones than people in the world, maybe it’s time to ask who really is in charge? Are you in control of your phone, or does your phone control you?
So, what happened with my university friend? When I arrived a few minutes late he just laughed and said: “You haven’t changed at all—still always late!” And we had a great afternoon catching up, full of jokes and stories, with no desire to check my phone.
Not having it with me felt strangely free. Maybe I’ll leave it at home on purpose next time.

“Hey! Are you a girl or a duck?” I ignored (忽视) the comments because I knew they were from the mean girl, Betsy. I ran to my class, causing my slight limp (跛行) to become even more apparent. Already, I could see that things would be different here. At my old school, I had a group of friends to protect me. However, in this new school, I was on my own. I was grateful for alphabetic (字母的) seating. My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy’s last name came at the end. As the weeks went on, though, I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class. Whenever Betsy made one of her remarks, they would wave it aside and tell me to ignore her.
One day, our teacher asked us to change seats to make some new friends. As she assigned the new seating, Fran, Lisa, and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called. We didn’t want to be separated. And we especially didn’t want to sit anywhere near Betsy. Finally, Betsy sat directly behind me.
I knew this wasn’t going to be good. Betsy often leaned forward and said: “Quack, quack!” When I ignored her, she kicked my seat. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mum what had happened at school.
My mother sat me down and began to talk.
