二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Give people a chance before you judge them because you really never know what’s going on beneath the surface. I am always reminded that judging a person by what others say or my first impression is usually wrong.

It’s so easy to make assumptions (臆想)and expectations about someone, just to find out they were completely false. The shy girl turns out to be one of the funniest girls I’ve ever met; the mean girl is actually very sensitive and loving; the cocky guy is unsure of himself, etc.

I hope there is a world where we stop judging a person by what they wear, their hairstyle, their job, their car; we simply love and accept them for who they are. Someone may have untidy hair because they over slept, or their clothes don’t match because their house burned down and lost everything. All I’m saying is, “can we focus more on what’s going on inside a person rather than the outside?”

There are so many people who seem like everything is just fine on the outside, but the inside is angry or hurting. They don’t know how to just be themselves or they’re afraid to because they may be seen as the “crazy” or “strange” persons.

I truly believe everything begins with ourselves. Before we can really stop judging others by the outside, we must stop judging ourselves. We must know how to treat ourselves first. Let’s stop getting in our own way and accept ourselves and others as we are.

【1】The underlined word “cocky” in Paragraph 2 probably means______.

    A. lovely   B. clever C. proud   D. stupid

2When we judge a person, we should pay more attention to _______.

    A. what he wears   B. what he does or has

    C. our first feelings and thoughts D. what’s going on inside him

3What’s the best title of the passage?

    A. Don’t judge a book by its cover   B. Judge a person by his outside.

    C. Learn to just be yourselves. D. Accept what you are.

  • 27、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps (处于沮丧中), as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.

How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your comer store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (礼貌) to speak to others that are around you.

I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?

Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

  • 28、The Fennec fox, the smallest of the species of foxes, is also famous as the desert fox since it survives in the Sahara Desert. Quite a few people wish to raise it as a pet because of its appearance. However, this is very rare, as it needs special care and attention. Let’s take a look at the basic information on the Fennec fox, including its physical appearance, natural habitat, and diet.

    Physical Appearance

The Fennec fox is the smallest type of fox, with a body length of about 9.5-16 inches, and 6-inch-long ears. It weighs only around one kilogram. It has a cream-colored, furry body, with a black-tipped tail.

Their ears are the largest among all foxes relative to the body size, which not only provide them with great hearing, but also radiate the extreme desert heat and thus help to keep the body cool. Moreover, in order to walk on the hot sand, a Fennec fox’s feet are covered with thick fur. Not only that, the feet also help in digging, as this animal lives under the ground.

    Habitat and Lifestyle

The habitat of this animal is mainly in the Sahara Desert, and also in other parts of North Africa. The Fennec fox is usually active during the night. This character helps it deal successfully with the extreme heat in the desert.

As an extremely social animal, it often lives in groups of ten and each group has its own land. This animal is, however, aggressive too, ready to attack, especially in the mating (交配) season, when they all compete with each other for a mate.

    Diet

The Fennec fox is an omnivore (杂食动物). While it can survive on plants, it also needs other items such as insects, rabbits, birds and eggs. Getting used to living in the desert allows it to survive for long periods without any water. They are known to take in water when eating food, but will drink water if available.

【1】What helps the Fennec fox survive in the desert?

    A.The small body size.

    B.Getting active at night.

    C.The great hearing.

    D.Living in groups.

【2】The underlined word “radiate” (Paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to ________ .

    A.send out

    B.take in

    C.suffer from

    D.turn down

【3】What can we learn about the Fennec fox in the passage?

    A.It seldom attacks others.

    B.It’s the smallest.

C.It can survive without any water.

D.It’s difficult to raise it as a pet animal in the desert.

  • 29、Over the centuries, through genetic and cultural adaptation, humans and a wild bird species have learned to work together .When human honey-hunters make a certain noise, a bird called the honey guide does its job with unbelievable accuracy, leading people to hidden bees' nests.

Scientists put this ancient practice to the test. When biologists compared the honey guide call to other sounds, the traditional sound sent the honey guides to hidden bees nest three times more often than other sounds, according to a study in the journal Science. When you make the right noise, you end up with more honey compared to the wrong noise.

"It's an exchange of information for skills," said study lead author Claire Spottiswoode, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Cambridge. She failed to find bees nests until her friends made the right noise, and then was rewarded with honey that's very rich and delicious.

The honey guide has a special ability to find bees' nests. “Scientists aren't quite sure how it works, but it likely has to do with a sophisticated sense of smell,” Spottiswoode said. Still, there's a problem: These nests are stuck in trees that are difficult for the birds to reach. Even worse, the bees sting the birds, sometime to death. The people of the region, who make a living on the honey, have tools that can get at those nests and they use smoke to chase the bees away, reducing the stinging problem.

It's clear that the birds have adapted in an evolutionary way through natural selection, but for people the arrangement is probably more cultural.

1According to the study, when making the wrong noise, people probably will .

    A. get more honey

    B. find bees’ nests easily

    C. have difficulty finding bees’ nests

    D. earn more time

2What does the underlined word “sophisticated”in the fourth paragraph probably mean?

    A. elementary   B. Advanced.

    C. Plain.   D. Poor

3What can be learned from the text?   ?

    A. Scientists have found out how the honey guide works.

    B. Honey guides can easily get bees' nests in trees.

    C. Honey-hunters are not afraid of stinging problem.

    D. The bees are afraid of smoke.

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A. The terrible relationship between humans and wild birds.

    B. People in the mountains make a living on the honey.

    C. The honey guide can help humans find bees’ nests

    D. Human honey-hunters’ wonderful life.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The first time we set eyes on “Big Red,” father, mother and I were trudging through the freshly fallen snow and passing the Eaton’s department store’s window. We stopped as usual to gaze and do a bit of dreaming. The gaily decorated window display the breathtaking skirt of Big Red. Mother’s eyes were glued to the massive flame of red. “My goodness,” she managed to say in wonder, “would you just look at that dress?” Then, totally out of character, mother twirled one spin of a waltz (华尔兹) on the slippery sidewalk. Beneath the heavy grey wool coat she had worn every winter for as long as I could remember, mother lost her balance and tumbled. Father quickly caught her.

Her cheeks redder than usual, “Oh, stop that!” She ordered as he swept the snow from her coat. “What a silly dress to be placed up there in the window of Eaton’s!” She shook her head in disgust. “Who on earth would want such a fancy but useless dress?” As we continued down the street, mother turned back for one more look.

Christmas was nearing , and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mother, of all people, was not one to wish for, or spend money on items that were not practical. “There are things we need more than this or that,” she’d always say. Father, on the other hand, liked to satisfy whenever the budget allowed. Of course, he’d get scolded for his occasional splurging (挥霍), but it was all done with the best intention.

On our last trip to town before Christmas, we were driving up Main Street when Mother suddenly shouted in surprise: “Would you just look at that!” She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton’s.

“That big real dress is gone,” she said in disbelief. “It’s actually gone.”

“Well…!” Dad chucked. “Oh God, it is!”

“Who’ d be fool enough to buy such a dress?” Mother questioned, shaking her head.

I quickly stole a glance at Dad. His blue eyes were twinkling as he nudged me with his elbow. Mother craned her neck for another glimpse out the window as we rode on up the street. “It’s gone…” She whispered, a trace of story in her voice.

    Paragraph 1:

I’ll never forget that Christmas morning

    Paragraph 2:

Mother opened the box only to find a red shining dress.
