26、Many people dream of going into space, but until recently only professional astronauts had that privilege. That all changed in 2022, with successful first missions for several space tourism companies.
First off the runway, in early July, was Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic company. Its spaceship, called VSS Unity, took four passengers and two pilots on a trip to the edge of space, where they experienced weightlessness and saw the Earth from above.
Unity has a fully reusable design--it is carried to a height of 9. 5 miles under a larger “mothership” plane called Eve. It is then released before firing its own rockets to reach its maximum height of 53 miles. As it begins to fall, its wings turn around so that it floats down slowly like a shuttlecock (羽毛球), before levelling out and flying back to land like a normal aeroplane. Virgin Galactic hopes to begin regular flights in 2023.
Less than two weeks later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s New Shepard rocket made its first flight, launching a space capsule with four passengers to an altitude of 66 miles. Among those on board were Bezos himself and 82-year-old Wally Funk, a pioneering female pilot who trained for NASA’s Mercury programme in the early 1960s but had waited 60 years for her chance to go into space. Funk became the oldest person to fly in space but only held that record until October, when 90-year-old actor William Shatner flew on the second New Shepard launch. Shatner played Captain Kirk in the Star Trek TV series and films.
In September, the Inspiration 4 mission carried four ordinary people into orbit around Earth. The launch was the first private passenger flight for Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, using a Dragon spacecraft that is also used for NASA missions. Designed to raise awareness and funds for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, US, the mission was paid for by billionaire Jared Isaacman. He was joined on the three-day flight by medical researcher Hayley Arceneaux, competition winner Dr Sian Proctor and hospital supporter ChrisSembroski.

27、 Doing crosswords(纵横字谜) is a fun way to kill the time and can also be educational. Difficult crosswords may leave you confused as you have no ideas on how to solve them sometimes. To perform well in this game, you need to have enough knowledge of different fields. If you are unable to do them and you have access to the answers, it is not generally considered cheating to look up an answer or two. However, in some cases, it does not follow the rule.
A crossword should not include someone else's answers, so even a quick look at a fellow student to complete a crossword would not be fair. Generally, you wouldn't have access to the answers.
Additionally, some crossword competitions should not be connected with cheating. Again, in such a situation, you usually won't have access to the answers. Turning to the Internet or referring to(查阅) any books of crosswords for answers is also unfair, since some people will complete the crosswords strictly with their own knowledge.
If you are not in a competitive environment, the check of a word can actually be an opportunity to learn how to become better at crosswords. Through looking up the answers (Although sometimes considered as cheat.), you can memorize whatever facts or word definitions(定义)you must look up. This will help you avoid the need to cheat in the future.
Some argue that cheating on crosswords is always wrong, and you're only cheating yourself if you are looking up the answers. It could be argued instead that cheating on crosswords that are done for fun or enjoyment can actually be an opportunity to benefit yourself because you're learning something new. Just don't forget to mention that you actually did cheat a little. Being honest is of great importance both to you and the other competitors.
It can be helpful to buy books of crosswords that have several different difficulty levels. If you are new to doing crosswords, you might want to put off working on crosswords until you are more confident in your skills.

28、When I was young, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never shouted at us for playing in his yard. I remembered him as a neighbor who was nicer than anyone else in the neighborhood. When Dr. Gibbs was happy, he was planting trees. And his life’s goal was to make it a forest.
Dr. Gibbs had some interesting theories about planting. He talked about trees that weren’t watered would grow deep roots in search of water. So he never watered his trees. He planted an oak (橡树) and, instead of watering it every morning, he beat it with the rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Dr. Gibbs died a couple of years. Every now and then, I walk by his house and look at the trees that he planted twenty-five years ago. They’re very strong now.
I planted a couple of trees a few years later. I watered them regularly and took good care of them. Whenever a cold wind blows, they shake their leaves and branches.
The funny thing about those trees of Dr. Gibbs was that difficulty seemed to help them in ways comfort and ease never could.
