二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The US teenager Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at-Hebron High School in Texas. However, when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Mandarin(普通话) class, he quickly changed his mind.

“I thought Mandarin would be more beneficial than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language. He speaks Mandarin to order food at Chinese restaurants and can read social media posts from his Chinese-speaking friends.

While it is a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. “Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming a growing power,” he said.

Many experts agree that proficiency in a language spoken by more than a billion people worldwide will give American students an edge in the global economy. “People are looking at China as our next economic competitor, and interest in Mandarin is growing fast,” said Marty Abbott, executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. “We’re seeing it in all parts of the country.”

Abbott estimates that as many as 100,000 students are now studying Mandarin throughout the US, in public and private schools. She said the US government has designated(指定) Mandarin as a “critical need” language and provided professional development programs for teachers. “Our government wants to increase our language competency for national security(安全) and economic competitiveness,” Abbott said.

At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes established in many US states. For example, the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas has been the home of a Confucius Institute for 10 years. It sponsors(赞助) Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools, where tens of thousands of students are learning Mandarin.

B.Mandarin might help him learn more about Chinese food.

C.Mandarin could enable him to make more friends online

  • 27、Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. She says, “ While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician (儿科医生), believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses. They need to establish a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.

Older people can beef up (加强) their brain as well. Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors ranging in age from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should involve some complexity (复杂). Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or tai chi, helps open up memory paths in the brain that may not have used for a long time.

For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.

【1】The passage is mainly about ________.

    A.how to exercise

    B.how exercise helps the brain

C.how to get good scores in a test

    D.how the brain can change

    A.Exercise makes us active

B.The brain needs special mental exercise

C.The more exercise, the bigger the brain

D.Physical exercise keeps the brain in a better condition.

【3】The least amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is ________.

    A.Three hours per week

    B.Forty hours per week

    C.Three hours per day

    D.Forty hours per month

【4】Why does the author think that yoga is fit for seniors?

    A.It is easy to learn.

B.It can be done in groups.

C.It does not increase the heart rate.

    D.It involves learning new motions

  • 28、   A new study in the journal of Tourism Analysis shows frequent travelers are happier with their lives than people who don't travel at all.

Chun-Chu Chen, an assistant professor at Washington State University, conducted a survey to find out why some individuals travel more frequently than others and whether or not travel and tourism experiences have a lasting effect on happiness and wellness.

Additionally, participants in the survey who reported regularly traveling at least 75 miles away from home also reported being about 7% happier when asked about their overall well-being than those who reported traveling very rarely or not at all. The results of his analysis show individuals who pay more attention to tourism-related information and frequently discuss their travel plans with friends are more likely to go on regular vacations than those who aren’t constantly thinking about their next trip.

“While things like work, family life and friends play a bigger role in overall reports of well-being. The accumulation (积累) of travel experiences’ does appear to have a small yet noticeable effect on self-reported life satisfaction,” Chen said.

Participants in the study were asked about the importance of travel in their lives, how much time they spent looking into 'and planning future vacations, and how many trips they went on over a year. They were also asked about their life satisfaction. Out of the 500 survey participants, a little over half reported going on more than four pleasure trips a year. Only 7% of respondents did not take any vacations.

As travel restrictions (限制) due to COVID-19 pandemic begin to relax in the future, the research could. have important effects on both tourists and the tourism industry. Based on the results of the study, Chen said travel companies, resorts and even airlines, could launch social media campaigns, such as creating signs about the scientific benefits of vacation, to spark people’s interest in discussing their opinions about travel.

【1】What is the benefit of frequent travelling according to the study?

    A.Getting more tourism information.

    B.Making more friends.

    C.Bettering tourism industry.

    D.Improving one's well-being.

【2】What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Tourism industry should improve their service.

B.The results of the study will benefit tourism industry.

C.COVID-19 pandemic will be more serious in the future.

  • 29、Who could have imagined that a treadmill(跑步机)on wheels would one day become a thing?!? Lopifit is an unusual means of transportation that allows you to power an electric bicycle by walking on a treadmill.

Lopifit founder Bruin Bergmeester says it all started when he asked himself the question “How can I use a treadmill outdoors?” He finally came up with a new design, adding an electric motor, and the Lopifit was born. It’s similar to an electric bicycle in that the motor only works when the rider puts power in as well. The Lopifit senses when you walk on the treadmill and uses the motor to turn a drive chain at the back of the treadmill, helping you reach a top speed of 17 miles per hour.

To use the Lopifit, simply turn on the battery(电池)and use your foot to slide the treadmill backwards and start the motor. Then get on and enjoy the ride! If you need speed, just walk on the treadmill, and if you want to coast(惯性滑行), all you have to do is stay still and admire the view. To stop, you have two hand breaks.

The Lopifit first hit the streets in 2014 and, unsurprisingly, became a hit overnight. That was actually quite challenging for the company, because it started getting calls for orders, but it was nowhere near ready for mass production. The unique treadmill bicycle could be bought this year, and Lopifit is struggling to keep up with demand, although the price is up to $2,115.

Some people consider this means of transportation stupid and unnecessary, although there is a very loyal fan-base of so-called Lopifitters. They simply believe that if you’re going to walk, you might as well do it the old-fashioned way.

But the Lopifit does have the special advantage of helping you “walk” really fast without much effort, or walking at cycling speed, if you will.

1Lopifit is an electric bicycle which ________.

    A. can be powered by the drive chain

    B. can work without an electric motor

    C. works when you walk on the treadmill

    D. stops when you slide the treadmill forward

2What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A. The design of a Lopifit.   B. The function of a Lopifit.

    C. The structure of a Lopifit.   D. The operation of a Lopifit.

3What is probably the author’s attitude towards Lopifit?

    A. Confident.   B. Concerned.

    C. Curious.   D. Doubtful.
